Almost 40... can I wear skirts above the knee?

I'm 39, a size 10, 5' 8" and reckon my legs aren't bad at all... I'd love to wear an above-the-knee winter skirt, Boden-esque perhaps, with nice thick tights and boots... do you think I could get away with it or are there some kind of style "rules" that say it's best avoided "at my age"? (groan) Don't want to look like mutton.... Thanks!

I don't see why not, go for it!

MrsBadger · 20/10/2008 12:50

absolutely fine

in fact I might go so far as to say you are the perfect age for them

on younger women the outfit you describe can look
um
[struggles]
mumsy?

honestfriend · 20/10/2008 12:50

yes- I am 53 and do so- about 2 inches above, with opaque tights and longer boots or ballet flats- but I do have good legs and am a size 10

littleboo · 20/10/2008 12:53

Yes bewilder i think you can, why not!especially thick tights, boots combo

BlingLovin · 20/10/2008 12:53

the wearing of a mini, IMHO, should have everything to do with your legs, size, height and style and nothing to do with your age.

So, if you're 50, but an attractive size 10 with good legs, go wild and enjoy it.

If you're 31, with a good figure but a large bum and not great legs and an unfortunate habit of walking like a duck... then no, don't wear them. [yes, I know someone ... She looks fabulous 90% of the time, but this particular fashion is one she needs to step away from... ]

ilove · 20/10/2008 12:55

Blimey I hope so...I'm the same age and have a couple of on-or-just-above the knee skirts/shift dresses!

OrmIrian · 20/10/2008 12:56

Yes. Agree with bling, legs matter more than age.

Blu · 20/10/2008 12:57

Yes!

jumpingbeans · 20/10/2008 12:57

Whatabout a non-attractive size 10?

DrNortherner · 20/10/2008 12:58

yes

NomDePlume · 20/10/2008 12:59

If you have good knees then you'll be fine

snowleopard · 20/10/2008 13:02

God yes, I think this look is great and I wish I felt confident enough to do it... I feel self-conscious about my chunky knees so tend to go no higher than A-line, but if you like your legs you definitely should.

I remember going to see Germaine Greer lecture and she wore a miniskirt and thick tights - was in her 50s - she looked brilliant, not mutton at all.

snowleopard · 20/10/2008 13:02

that was A-line knee length I meant

snowleopard · 20/10/2008 13:03

Blinglovin - only because I'm not 31 do I feel sure I'm not the woman you describe!

scaryfucker · 20/10/2008 13:15

I wear shortish (not bum-skimming) skirts/dresses and I am in my 40's.

I don't do bare legs though due to hints of varicosities behind knees and onset of knee wrinkles.

I wear thick tights and boots.

In fact, winter is the only time I do short.

BlingLovin · 20/10/2008 13:25

Phew snow, so glad it's not you!

Bewildermum · 20/10/2008 13:29

Oh thanks everyone, that's a great response - so many confident, stylish mummies out there. (I don't know anyone who wears that kind of stuff so wasn't sure whether to go for it... but I will now!) Now, where to find the perfect skirt...

Thanks!

Let us know if you find a good skirt because I have been looking. I have found kilt type things but not good over my bum and hips or a-line but I would like straightish.

Anna8888 · 20/10/2008 13:48

Yes of course I'm 42 and I wear above-knee length dresses with tights and boots all winter.

ditheringdora · 20/10/2008 13:49

Of course you can but whether you should is of course up to you!

honestfriend · 20/10/2008 13:53

The skirt I have is a Boden washed velvet in black - length 20 inches, which comes just above my knee caps!
I am currently wearing with thick black patterened tights and black ballet shoes, but will also wear with flat black riding boots.

I wouldn't call it a mini- mini to me, thinking back- is at least 6-9 inches above knee , and as a teenager in the early 70s, my skirts JUST covered my bum!

motherinferior · 20/10/2008 13:59

Another short-skirted thick-tighted 40plus signing in here.

soyabean · 20/10/2008 20:08

Me too, mid 40s, love wearing skirts just above/on knee with thick tights and boots but also almost never expose legs in summer. good dhape but horrible blotchy skin a nd varicose veins, yuk.

scaryfucker · 20/10/2008 20:57

yeah soya, same here

me face is holding up OK but the saggy knees, veiny feet and bulging varicosities kinda give the game away!

thank god for opaque/woolly tights, may they forever reign in the fashion stakes !!!
