Roll out the 'statement' pieces I would say...you can get away with it with a lovely understated dress like that. Maybe big purple or green beaded necklace. High heels def.

maidamess · 10/10/2008 20:00

I would go for one of those fab fur short sleeved jacket things in either cream or a colour. Don't do pashminas...sooo old fashioned.
ici (but in a colour) avec necklace/dangly earrings (not both), and peeptoe shoes.

Beaten metal disc? Classic black heels? Tights? Pretty flats? Littlelapin, the ball is this year, not 1983

This sort of thing?
Or sparkly
Or with a bit of colour?

JackieNoHeadJustABloodyStump · 11/10/2008 22:59

'Statement necklace'
Military button necklace?

SandyChick · 11/10/2008 23:03

I really like these...

I was maybe thinking of something along these lines www.monsoon.co.uk/invt/32327903
instead of a wrap???

Would i need a bag? If so what type? Not sure how much i could stuff into DH's pockets in his uniform??? Lipstick, perfume etc

Im kind of thinking no necklace, just earings and maybe a bracelet. I have a swarovski necklace which is quite plain that i wore on my wedding day that has never been worn since so i may wear that if i do wear a necklace. I have the matching earings too.

The dress has a slight cowl neckline. Its not too low cut but i have quite an ample chest so i dont want too draw too much attention to that area.

Im stuck with what to do with my hair. I've just had it all chopped off to a chin length graduated bob from really long layered hair. Id like to dress it up some how???

Wouldn't try to do much with your hair except make sure it's in tip top condition & blow dried to perfection.

If you were thinking of something different then a good hairdresser should be able to do you a sort of puffy, "undone" French pleat - they backcomb a lot to creat the volume then smooth over the top layers, so your hair is candyfloss inside but you can't see it!! leaving just the fringe bits down. It's a very soft, sexy look and would go very well with the cowl neck - think a modern take on Audrey Hepburn. As a blonde you would look knockout.

It is very different to the tight and old-fashioned, wedding "cone" shape (think ballroom dancing) that a lot of hairdressers want to do with long hair but it looks better this way using chin-length hair IMHO.

In terms of jewellery, I would wear either necklace or earrings but never both. If a necklace then you need to echo the shape of the neckline, i.e. a choker-style or one that sits right at the bottom of the neck, but the worst shape would be a pendant necklace with a cowl neck - the necklace then creates a "v" neck and it clashes with the cowl. In your 20's you are young enough to make pearls look sexy - the new ones have pearls and metal beads mixed together. Don't go for yawnsome old Next type jewellry, the dress is simple enough to make a statement with the necklace.

Shoes - keep it simple - black and peeptoe, either slingback OR full heel. Slingbacks are slightly more "party", full heel are more "formal" IMO.

Bag - even simpler - a large clutch, no question. Either black OR a jewel colour eg midnight blue.

Gettingbiggernow · 11/10/2008 23:50

Oh AND wrap - if you are brave enough I would go for a black marabou cape. NOT fake fur - rarely do you get one that is easy to wear or sits comfortably. I got a great one last year by Julien Macdonald at Debenhams.

Can't do linkd but here is a similar one: www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10001_72331_699153_-1
