I've been watching my weight a bit, and I can fit in to wallis, next, monsoon, fcuk size tens, but not a top shop sizze ten., or anything remotely designery or high-end. So am I size ten or not?!!

Waht do you all think?

I think top shop are small. Thats what I tell myself as i squeeze into a pair of their size 16's

LaDiDaDi · 17/09/2008 15:21

I think that Next are quite large tbh.

I like Warehouse and Topshop because I know that I'm a size in those shops whereas in other shops the proportions never seem right.

Does it matter that much to you?

NotBigNotClever · 17/09/2008 15:23

All the sizes are way, way bigger than they were 20 years ago. Am a bit old and have today's size 10s and 1980's size 14s to prove it. I don't think there is any such thing as a standard size anything anymore.

TheNaughtiestGirlKeepsaSecret · 17/09/2008 15:25

So when can you truly know that you're size ten!? Is it Top Shop?? Yikes.

I think the sizes vary depending on a particular shop's target customer's age - so 'younger' shops like TopShop or Warehouse will have slightly smaller sizes than say M&S. So there's no such thing as a proper size 10, its all relative.

zippitippitoes · 17/09/2008 15:25

it doesnt really matter does it

i am either a ten or twelve

but i try clothes on

cupsoftea · 17/09/2008 15:26

The measurements should be on the clothes rather than size 10 or whatever.

NotBigNotClever · 17/09/2008 15:26

M&S do "deluded old lady sizing".

MascaraOHara · 17/09/2008 15:28

ime

gap, monsoon, hobbs: on the big side

kookai, warehouse, wallis, karen millen, coast, pronciples: average sizes

top shop, selfridge, morgan: small sizes

I never take much notice of size anymore.. I have everything from 10-16 in my wrdrobe. On average I wear a 12 (on a good month a 10)

i think river island quite big too

cupsoftea · 17/09/2008 15:29

but if you could see the waist & hip size it would save trying on lots

zippitippitoes · 17/09/2008 15:30

but it is the cut and style quite often

flowerybeanbag · 17/09/2008 15:30

Doesn't matter as long as the item fits you properly. I am a ten in some shops/styles and a twelve in others. Quite often I am an eleven.

I am wearing a pair of White Stuff trousers that I bought in a size twelve but feel as though they are falling down. But because of my shape I think a ten might be snug in some places. I will be moving the buttons on this pair!

all i know is that when i was a willowy 15 year old i was a size 10/12 and that was considered a small size.

now i've had 2 babies and am in the process of producing another, and am probably the dictionary definition pposite of willowy, size 10 is falling off me and is also listed as 'medium' on labels

think sizing is becoming very americanised over here.

I am a 10 but Next size 10 are massive on me whereas size 10 in Bay Trading or New Look don't get past my bum and I have to get a 12! But Pilot and FCUK and Monsoon are all a size 10 fit for me.

i reckon new look are proper size tens lol

PuppyMonkey · 17/09/2008 15:49

If I can fit into it, it's a proper size ten. if i can't... It's the companies all getting the sizes wrong and everything.

Can usually do New look, Riv Island etc. Struggle in Top Shop

Moneyspider · 17/09/2008 20:07

Ha! Was just leafing through complimentary magazine in hotel (Elle) and in one article it says:

"A size 10 Topshop woman has a 34.2-inch bust, 27.2-inch waist and 36-inch hips (increasing by 1.6 inches for a size 12). She's petite compared to New Look's average- bust 35.4-inch, waist 28.3 inch and hips 37-inch."

Not sure what that proves, but an odd coincidence from my perspective!

FairyMum · 17/09/2008 20:12

Yesterdaay I was a size 8 in Next and a size 12 in Topshop. M&S and Monsoon sizes are massive IME.
