Eight Hour Cream - what the feck?!!

LaVieEnRose · 30/08/2008 19:03

Bought it today on an impulse because I've heard so many times how good it is.

Good for what? It's very sticky! I thought it was some miracle cream that you slathered on at night and you woke up looking like Keira Knightley!

Apparently it's just to put on chapped lips?

Pah!

It's good for putting around your nose when you have a cold to stop the tissues ripping your nostrils to shreds.

Added bonus is that you can't smell it when bunged up

RambleOn · 30/08/2008 22:42

Kamillosan (sp?) better for bf than Lansinoh imo. And cheaper too.

why would you want to look like Kiera Knightley and that chin?

she's a munter.

LaVieEnRose · 30/08/2008 23:14

yeah but she has lovely skin. Well, she always looks like she has lovely skin

yes, a combination of good photographers, good makeup artists and Photoshop.

poppyknot · 30/08/2008 23:26

I did the same thing LaVie!

I think Beauty must haves are not for me.

I am still respending the £20 a year later and haven't used it once.

(Got a tube of hand cream with it and that is Ok but not worth £20)

beautyscientist · 03/09/2008 07:28

I think Lansinoh is a very good product and its high price is justified on the basis of using a very purified grade of lanolin. But I think the reality is that hardly anyone is really sensitive to lanolin. I think that 99.99% of people would be just fine with the much cheaper medical grade. That's what I use myself mixed with a little coconut oil.

nappyaddict · 03/09/2008 07:42

mothermates gel pads best for cracked nipples

Eight hour cream is great if you get dehydrated skin in the winter. slap it on at night and you really will see a difference in the morning.
Great for cuticles, burns, dodgy Dennis Healy eyebrows amd even split ends
I quite like the smell but I have been using the cream for years and might just be used to it
It is a bit like axel grease

thebecster · 03/09/2008 10:48

So true. Over past few years I have bought, and subsequently thrown out the following beauty 'must haves'. I bought because everyone raves about them.. Huh?

8 hour cream - smells funny, only real use is for chapped lips for which it is less effective than Carmex. For flakey skin I find 100% borage oil far more effective

YSL Touche Eclat - caused horrid eczema and allergic reaction around my eyes.

Aldi Goktastic anti-ageing cream - caused the worst acne of my life. Still have scars. At least it was cheap.

St Tropez Fake tan - created an odd giraffe pattern of brown markings on my legs which rubbed off to look like a recovering burns victim the next day, then disappeared.

Creme de la mer - okay this wasn't awful and I did use the whole pot in the end, but HOW MUCH??? And Liz Earle Skin Repair is much more effective for a fraction of the price.

Also Pantene and Dove - am allergic to everything in their range and get strangely resentful every time they come in in the 'beauty must have' list in magazines as I end up covered in red blistering welts if either comes anywhere near me. That's just me though...

sueellenewing · 03/09/2008 11:34

I think Lansinoh is wonderful and worth every penny. However, I did have a bit of a moan at my HV at the time that she couldnt prescribe it - even though she said it was the only one worth having - when there will be lots of women, just having had a money-guzzling new baby, who have to buy a cheaper and less effective product. They want women to bf dont they? Why not give them the best assistance then??

Anyway, that was a bit of a hi-jack but Lansinoh comes very highly recommended by me!

hopefully · 03/09/2008 11:48

I loved my 8 hour cream as lip balm, and the one tube I bought lasted nearly 2 years, but it definitely wasn't better than, say, carmex, and even after 2 years I'm not sure it was more economical, apart from the fact that I was careful not to lose it as it was so expensive!

Touche eclat = crap. May as well paint under my eyes with chalk to hide the circles. Lady at YSL told me it was because I needed the special YSL moisturiser that now goes with touche eclat. I laughed in a hollow manner at her crap product.

thebecster · 03/09/2008 11:51

hopefully I know that hollow laugh well - the laugh of bitter beauty-consumer experience.

tullytwo · 03/09/2008 12:03

So can you use lansinoh on your face overnight then? Its not too greasy?

Bumperlicious · 03/09/2008 12:34

I feel the same about Eve Lom. Spent 25 quid on a travel set when I was pg with morning sickness. Since then it has always made me heave!

bandgeek · 03/09/2008 13:45

I've got a tube lying around somewhere....used it about once, i think!

I got the Touche Eclait(sp?) and it stank!! I didn't fancy putting anything that smelt so damp on my face

cariboo · 03/09/2008 13:51

Got some for free from friend who works with E.Arden. Yes, it does stink but just the job for super dry skin. Wouldn't buy it though, unless planning to climb Everest or somethiing.

OsmosisBanana · 03/09/2008 13:59

yes, my 8 hour cream was bought at duty free after my honeymoon over 3 years ago. Still full.

Disagree re: Eve Lom though. I ration myself i love it so.

one thing that always appears on these 'must haves' is Palmers cocoa butter. Couldn't agree more. Never leave home wihtout it.

permatired · 04/09/2008 13:47

My dh (who is as far from being metrosexual as it is possible to be) calls 8 hour cream "that magic cream goop you've got" as it once sorted out his horrible sunburn, and I swear by it when it comes to stubborn dry patches, sore lips etc. Agree it does smell a bit though, and I wouldn't put it all over my face (too greasy) (which may be another reason why I don't look anything like Keira Knightly )

MadamAnt · 04/09/2008 13:54

It smells like Preparation H.

Er or at least that's what my, er...friend says.

[pristine arse]

thefortbuilder · 04/09/2008 13:58

the eve lom mask smells awful but works so i have to endure it. have unopened tube of 8 hr cream i was given as gift - may just have to open it to smell it.

cornsilk · 04/09/2008 14:04

I use my 8 hour cream loads. Lips and also for fine lines above lips - is excellent. I put a tiny bit under foundation and sometimes under tinted moisturiser if really haggard around eyes - gets rid of fine lines again. Brilliant as a neck cream.

schneebly · 04/09/2008 14:08

I heard a rumour that 8 hour cream is like a miracle cure if your DC have molluscum!

schneebly · 04/09/2008 14:09

Disclaimer - I have no evidence of this!
