Do I want a kaftan for my dreaded holiday? If so, which one?

I have a poolside problem

We are going away with PILs and BILs and just oh ALL of dh's family - it's awful actually, and I am repressing it and not thinking about it - EXCEPT I woke up last night thinking about the swimming pool.

Then I thought, I need a kaftan.

I looked at some on Toast but they looked too short.

Perhaps I'll wear my dressing gown?

OP posts:
ahundredtimes · 30/07/2008 20:56

this gives coverage but is a bit dreary

ahundredtimes · 30/07/2008 20:56

None of you care.

Do people actually wear kaftans?

I dont know what is on that link, but my image filter wont allow it....

Not sure Iknow what a caftan is.

lilolilmanchester · 30/07/2008 21:00

do you want it to sunbathe in or just going to and from the pool? I do care, cos I like to cover up my flab, but am not great at style stuff

ahundredtimes · 30/07/2008 21:00

On that link is basically a long dressing-gown type thing with a hood posing as beach wear.

You do know what a Kaftan is. It's a sort of long 70s thing, with flowing sleeves?

I have a sort of kaftan thing that I wear over a swimming costume. Got it ages ago from Monsoon. Not beaded.

Swedes · 30/07/2008 21:01

I can lend you two nice cotton ones, but they are not terribly long. They cover digouts the bottom and very upper thigh thing.

What size are you?

Or did you mean a Kaftan with a matching turban, in turquoise?

ahundredtimes · 30/07/2008 21:01

I think I want to put it on when I get out the pool [I know I shouldn't be moaning about this, because of the last sentence] and then not have to walk about in my swimsuit.

Next have some nice poolside cover-ups - dresses rather than kaftans start here

ahundredtimes · 30/07/2008 21:02

Thank you Swedes you star. Thing is I worry about just covering my bottom. I think I want to cover my bottom? I think I want something knee-length.

Do I?

I feel like I do.

OP posts:
oranges · 30/07/2008 21:03

I just got this for the beach and it's fab - glides on and looks cool and floaty

Stargazing · 30/07/2008 21:04

I've got a knee-length one you can borrow - it's orange and red. too garish??

ahundredtimes · 30/07/2008 21:05

Thank you both for links. Am looking.

Basically you've gone for dresses, yes? Perhaps I need to drop the whole idea of a kaftan and just buy a dress which I pull on and treat like a kaftan?

Swedes, if you could throw the turban in?

OP posts:
ahundredtimes · 30/07/2008 21:08

Thank you Star, that's really kind, but I feel like I ought to buy because I envisage wearing a lot, when dripping wet and things and I'd worry I'd ruin it.

The Ghost one looks a bit posh to throw on after the pool no?

last poolside/beach holiday we went on, place was crawling with Italians. All the Italian women wore floaty, gauzy caftans and they looked nice.

What you need are very dark glasses so you can't see dh's family though and books to hide behind.

Stargazing · 30/07/2008 21:09

god I would just die if I had to spend more than about an hour with any of my inlaws. I'm serios though, you are welcome to borrow mine.

Swedes · 30/07/2008 21:09

Boden had some lovely quite long very colourful ones.

Have you thought about a leopardprint kaftan with matching slash fronted cutaway-buttock swimsuit? And perhaps some matching high-heeled mules too?

Swedes · 30/07/2008 21:11

If it's for modesty rather than sun protection, how about a long vest/dress? Sort of effortless and not too much flesh hiding.

oranges · 30/07/2008 21:11

see i just went kaftan hunting today and found that the casual ones are see through, which is pointless - I may as well just walk around in the damn bikini. The ghost one in glue is very beach-y and is more floaty than it looks in the picture.

oranges · 30/07/2008 21:12

in blue, not glue. obviously.

ahundredtimes · 30/07/2008 21:13

YY - we ARE going to Italy.

Actually I think that Ghost is one is pretty perfect isn't it? I might order. I hope it's not too detailed, but just about detailed.

lolol Swedes. I was thinking of bleaching my hair too, and taking along a small toy dog in my handbag. A good look, non?

It WILL be dreadful. I truly believe I will go mad. Am taking huge huge glasses to hide frowns and tears and dagger stares, and about 6000 books.

And now a kaftan. I'm going for the Ghost one.

OP posts:
ahundredtimes · 30/07/2008 21:14

oranges - it is floaty is it? I was going to get in blue. Don't need a size up?

OP posts:
SSSandy2 · 30/07/2008 21:24

what do you mean with the ghost one? I thought those Italian women looked great in those caftans. I will definitely get a couple myself

I usually have dropped waist pull over jersey dresses which I throw over but then I am not the sexy type (and I am afraid there is not just fashion concerns behind the dropped waist - you get yourself a nice caftan) and a couple of voodoo dolls

oranges · 30/07/2008 21:26

yay! The sizing is generous so get your normal size. it's floaty but not wispy, iyswim. but wispy looks ridiculous on me - like i'm dressed in rags. it is a kind of dress - i fully intend to wear it for sundowners.
