Anyone had their long hair cut short?

RelievedNoYouTubeMum · Yesterday 18:13

My hair is long. Passed my bra strap and very thick.

For work I have to have it off my collar, so either a bun (which is now uncomfortable and heavy) or a low plait, which flops over my shoulder when leaning over and is annoying. I used to love French braids but the weight of them are uncomfortable now too. I rarely wear it down as I don't think it suits me.

I did have my hair cut into a chin length bob with undercut just before covid. I think I loved it but It was never maintained and it just grew out again.

Has anyone had a big cut and found it liberating? Hated it?

I know it will grow back if I don't like it so I don't know why I am dithering!

I went from past my bra strap to a bob a couple of weeks ago. My hair grows quite fast so I do it from time to time. I actually find it more annoying to have it short than long as it’s harder work so I’ll probably grow it out again, get bored and then chop it off.

I have. But I am peri and my previously long and lustrous hair went thin and witchy. It was dreadful. I had it cut to just about chin length and I really like it. It’s looks and feels far thicker, I can style it in so many different ways and I can still put it in a (very short and stumpy) ponytail when I need it out of the way.

outerspacepotato · Yesterday 18:18

I did but my hair grows so fast it's more work to keep up with.

MummyWillow1 · Yesterday 18:21

I did about 15 years ago - maintaining a short style is expensive. Regular trims every 6-8 weeks. I love my hairdresser though and I’m happy (and can afford) to pay.

Growlybear83 · Yesterday 18:28

When I was 17 I decided to get my waist length hair cut short into a David Bowie cut, and dyed it bright orange with henna. I think I cried myself to sleep every night for weeks. It took years to grow out the orange and get back to a reasonable length. I swore then that I would never cut it short again - I'm 68 now, and have never worn it short since, and never will.

hotcrossbrum · Yesterday 18:31

Yes - I recently had my increasingly wispy perimenopausal shoulder length curls cut into a mid-1950s Hollywood-ish bob, and I love it. It looks thicker, the curls curl better and the cut was intentional enough that it doesn’t look (too much) like my mum circa 1985.

Enko · Yesterday 18:33

I did and kept it short for 15 years after. Bowever considering growing it again now. I enjoy putting it up

I had a bad short haircut as a teenager which I've never really got over.

I have had very short hair again but I went down gradually. I would never hack all mine off in one go.

If your hair is thick it might be more unmanageable shorter as you don't have so much weight to weigh it down. Not sure if layers help with that or make it worse.

The good thing about going short once even if you don't keep it, you then know for sure what's like. I have loads of photos of me with all different length hair so I would never now go to the hairdresser with a vague idea or an inspiration pic of someone else.

mtobrokeme · Yesterday 19:03

Yes! Twice! Both during periods of depression and I regret it both times! The last time it was down to the middle of my back, my crowning glory and I had it cut into a pixie crop.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · Yesterday 19:05

I’ve never been tempted to grow mine long again after having it chopped off - though I am at the hairdressers every 5-6 weeks so it’s expensive to maintain. I did in stages - shoulder length, jaw length, and now only just able to tuck it behind my ears length.

TheBayHorse · Yesterday 19:10

Yes in my late teens I went from long to a short sleek bob. It looked amazing and felt far sexier than the longer style. I've mainly had my hair short since then as my hair is thick and a pain to dry and deal with when it's longer.

RelievedNoYouTubeMum · Yesterday 19:13

A mixed message! So still non the wiser 🙃

I don't love my hair. It's in OK condition but starting to grey quite a bit and colouring (at home) is becoming a pain. Being shorter would be easier I think, but maybe not a short bob.

Off to look at pictures of when it was shorter...

There is an Instagrammer called 'lorna' who has just had a jaw length chop. It has made her appear 15 years younger! I had assumed she was 50ish but googled and she is actually 44. The shorter cut looks so much more current (and makes me wonder if I should chop 6cm's off mine)

AlteFrau · Yesterday 19:18

I've had a really radical cut - from very long to very short. People said it made me look younger. I feel more 'free'. It has curled more - before the weight and length was dragging it down. No regrets.

OneNewLeader · Yesterday 19:22

I usually spend 5 years with long hair , then the following 5 with short hair. I find shorter hair easier on a day to day basis, but needs cutting every 5 weeks.

I like both, but make sure you chose a cut that suits your face shape.

caringcarer · Yesterday 19:23

Last week I noticed my long hair down my back was looking very thin so I had between 5-6 inches cut off and it really looks so much thicker and better. It grows quickly so by the spring it will have grown an inch or two. It's still long enough for a decent length pony tail or a messy bun.

HeddaGarbled · Yesterday 19:26

Yes, I went from waist length to the chin length bob and was never tempted to re-grow it.

You know in old stories when women said they couldn’t go on dates because they were washing their hair? They weren’t exaggerating: drying long, thick hair could pretty much take an evening. And if I went swimming, I’d be dripping down my back until I got home because swimming pool hairdryers were no match for my mane!

Ah, the liberation of 10 minutes with a hairdryer and a curly brush anytime I choose.

malloryknox123 · Yesterday 20:25

I did and I hated it. I looked utterly frumpy and felt bereft for days afterwards

LoserWinner · Yesterday 20:42

I did, years ago now. Waist length to a short bob. Then down to a pixie cut. It SO much easier.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · Yesterday 20:52

I went from 'can just about sit on it' to something very close to this.

It was so light! And washing and drying in under 10 minutes was liberating.

But I hate going to hairdressers, so after a few years grew it back to a length I can easily cut myself.

I have had short hair cuts in the past - jaw length. But my hair is thick and never sits right. There's too much styling for me. I start getting annoyed with it and when the summer comes round and its so hot I just want it pulled off my face and neck. My hair is past my bra strap. I can wear it down straight, wavy or curly. Tie it up. Have half up, half down. So much more to do with it. I won't be cutting mine short again anytime soon

Doppe · Today 05:19

I’ve had had long hair most of my life. It’s not particularly thick though (my two sisters inherited my Mums incredibly thick hair, I inherited Dad’s side of the family much finer hair - just my luck!) however I rarely wear it loose, it’s usually in a ponytail. I went for a very short bob a few years ago but it soon grew out and I went back to a ponytail. However im going for a skull op soon where they will have to shave one side of my head. I think short hair will be easier to manage/ keep clean/stay out of the wound but then if I keep longer hair could I hide the area better? I dont know whether to use the operation to try something drastically different with my hair or stick to what I know. This hairstyle quandary is helping distract from the nerves about the actual procedure though!

sashh · Today 06:30

I've done it a few times, I used to donate the 'The Little Princess Trust' who make real hair wigs for children.

I usually go for a bob and then start regrowing, but there is too much grey in my hair now.

UseOfWeapons · Today 06:48

I had long hair to my waist, until I was about 45, then one day took a proper look at myself, and thought ‘This doesn’t suit you anymore.’ Made an appointment with my hairdresser, and had it cut into a pixie type cut. My hair was donated to the Little Princess Charity, to make wigs for kids on chemo.
It’s easy to maintain, wash daily, no hairdryer or products needed, and a quick trim every 5 weeks. I’d never go back to long hair now.

ThisWiseRobin · Today 07:57

Please please don't cut your hair. Do you realise that for people like me, with hair that looks like a knitted teacosy. I envy you so much. Just saying.
From the thin fine hair brigade.
