Anyone had their long hair cut short?

My hair is long. Passed my bra strap and very thick.

For work I have to have it off my collar, so either a bun (which is now uncomfortable and heavy) or a low plait, which flops over my shoulder when leaning over and is annoying. I used to love French braids but the weight of them are uncomfortable now too. I rarely wear it down as I don't think it suits me.

I did have my hair cut into a chin length bob with undercut just before covid. I think I loved it but It was never maintained and it just grew out again.

Has anyone had a big cut and found it liberating? Hated it?

I know it will grow back if I don't like it so I don't know why I am dithering!

I know at you mean but the heavy bun, a this length, anything on my neck feels like I’m carrying around a kitten on my shoulder

I’d proceed with caution…. My peri hair is quite frizzy though still thick so I find it’s much smoother longer. It’s nearly at my bottom.

I have lots of hair. I would love to go short, but it turns in to a shrub without the weight, and I find it annoying not being able to tie it up when outside in windy conditions. I can't bear my hair flying around. My problem is that I've started exercising regularly and if I don't wash my hair each time it's gets itchy from sweat. My dream is to get a wash and go full on buzz cut.

I’ve done it about four times. I have a rule if I start wearing it up all the time then I have it cut much shorter.

I have had a middle option for a long time which is mid/longish, long layers at the front and a fringe and it looks lovely.

I’ve just gone from straight-ish rather frizzy armpit level hair to short curly layers. It grew out during COVID and I’d forgotten how much it suits me.

Before the previous short cut I’d had long hair to mid-back for years, never regretted it. It curls naturally when short and the frizz is gone.

Have you had layers or shaping put into your hair? I have long thick hair and adding layers was a game changer for making it work!
Have had it shorter at times but doesn't really suit me!

@RelievedNoYouTubeMum do you need to go so short straight away, could you go for a halfway between length and then go shorter if you felt comfortable with it? My hair is almost at my bra strap and I have always loved having longer hair, but I feel it suits me more now if it's shoulder length or just above. As long as I can tie it up then I am happy. My hair has got curlier the older I've got, and now I am menopausal, it's the curliest it's ever been and I have much better curls when it's shorter. The longer length drags the curl down.

I went from long to pixie a few years ago. It was great. No less work though. Probably more actually as I needed to make an effort, not just put it up. Loved it though. Then Covid hit and it grew and I kept it longer again. Going to stick with longer for now.

I did. I had waist length hair and had a bit of a forced situation so went to a short Emma Thompson style crop and embraced the grey. It’s great. I mourn the “old me” a bit but I’ve now survived cancer treatment and chemo, so I’m glad to be here. It’s so easy to manage, doesn’t need washing as often, which is great as I swim/ gym at least 3x weekly.

When I heard I would need chemo, I had it cropped and went to the little princess trust. Although I cold capped and kept most of it, I knew I would still shed some and wouldn’t be able to colour the way I had for six months. I can always grow and colour it again if I change my mind.

I loved a pixie when I was young, my jawline couldn't take it now. One thing I will say is: you really need to find a stylist who understands short hair - I don't think they get the practice these days, everyone seems to be long-with-straighteners...

There use to be some fabulous short styles in the 80s/90s - if you watch Top of the Pops 2 on a Friday night, you'll see some great inspo - sexy, stylish, confident, well-structured cuts...

But as your problem is the weight, try going shoulder-length first. Good luck, it's a fun, fraught adventure trying a radical new cut!

I've had super long hair and the gone to a Lob haircut. It's so much easier and quicker to style. I had a big chop in summer and it was great. I'm growing out my silver highlights so it's been great for that to cut off old dyed hair. Idbresearch a shape andstyle that suits your face.

I cut mine every few years when it gets too long. I don't like the way it looks shorter but it's so much easier to manage (washing and brushing mainly).

There is an Instagrammer called 'lorna' who has just had a jaw length chop. It has made her appear 15 years younger! I had assumed she was 50ish but googled and she is actually 44. The shorter cut looks so much more current (and makes me wonder if I should chop 6cm's off mine)

This is the trick, it needs to be trendy. Because any other variant is aging. Or if grey or not
Just like weight loss can make some look younger and some older. It depends
Longer hair in general takes years off

Totally this. I initially loved my short cut, but it could look ‘practical’ instead of edgy if I wasn’t careful. It also made me feel a bit invisible. It’s back to shoulder length now and I prefer it.

I’ve gone short a couple of times in my life, on previous occasions everyone went “wow” but this last time, people either said nothing (which was a bit weird) or “oh you’ve changed your hair” so maybe it was the wrong thing to do at my age? 50s ….

I've got long hair. It's been various lengths - really long to mid-length; I had it cut into a long bob at one point. I really liked it but having longer hair gives you more options as you can wear it up/down in multiple ways.

Why don't you gradually have it cut shorter rather than a dramatic cut?
