Does no one wear a coat any more? – have you noticed this too?

So I am really not a big coat person. Apart from a short waterproof badged with my club that I wear when my summer officiating role includes a rainy day, I own one coat – a 5yo Seasalt rainproof coat with a hood and a cosy lining.

The main times I am outdoors tbh in cold or rain are a) watching DS play his sport or b) when I am out at an event (Christmas craft fair, trip to concert or theatre) or on a winter city break where I use public transport. Otherwise I drive to work (not accessible any other way unless you live close enough to walk).

Maybe that's it. I mean I think of myself as a coat refuser but even I wore one to work yesterday – it’s almost November, chilly and possibly rainy. But when I put it on the coat stand and then took it off at the end of the day, there was only one other coat there.

So do Gen Zs and Millennials (I am neither but there are lots at my work) just not wear coats any more? Any thoughts?

One answer cars.
People are no longer walking far outside or waiting around at bus stops.

ElizaSchuyler · 29/10/2026 11:33

Youngsters don't wear coats. My son is 22 and only wears them when it is absolutly freezing. My daughter does wear them although she runs very warm. She is 25 has zipped hoodies and football/F1 merch jackets she wears in the rain and a Hugo puffer jacket for the winter.

I love coats. I have a Barbour long puffa, a Barbour thin rain jacket, a Burberry trench coat and a long Max Mara wool coat.

Arbourimage · 29/10/2026 11:33

I would say easily 90% of the people I see outside are wearing a coat from now to March.

BindweedIsMyNemesis · 29/10/2026 11:35

I'm in the country. Wall-to-wall coats to deal with rain/wind/mud.

(Although the Young Farmers wear checked shirts and fleece gilets 12 months of the year!)

Needmorelego · 29/10/2026 11:35

@Newname26 I don't have a car so that reason doesn't apply to me.
However I am rarely cold outside.
I find coats annoying. On the rare occasion it is colder I wear gloves, scarf and hat but don't need to add a coat.
It just doesn't seem to get as cold as it used too.
Edit: I am in London where it often is warmer.

GintyMcGinty · 29/10/2026 11:37

I live in Scotland where everyone wears coats.

We get a few days in the 'summer' where we are able to shed them.

I own at 15 coats. Most are warm and weatherproof and range from coping with its chilly to its fucking baltic.

Needmorelego · 29/10/2026 11:39

I think with the younger generation the school uniform of having a blazer means they often don't wear a coat.
Coats are awkward to wear over a blazer. When they get to school they often have to remove their coat before entering the building and they don't actually have anywhere to store it.
So they get used to never having a coat.

clary · 29/10/2026 11:40

Oooh @ElizaSchuyler MAxMara wool coat, lovely. I sold my last wool coat tho as I never wore it.

@GintyMcGinty I hear you on Scotland. I was in Glasgow in the summer (when it was, like, 30º in the Midlands) and it was so so cold!

I think the car is to blame in my office esp as (as I say) it's impossible to get a bus there and most of the staff don't live very locally.

I agree. When I was at school we had proper cloakrooms to leave our coats in or we were allowed to take them with us and put them over the back of our chairs. Now they hav to remove them before they set foot in the building, so as you say, they just get used to not wearing them.

It's navy so I think it is a more versatile colour. I wear it a lotbetween October - March. I have it with me today at work.

BelleEpoque27 · 29/10/2026 11:43

If I were driving to an office I wouldn't take a coat - they're annoying to drive in and I'm unlikely to get cold between the car park and office, unless it's deepest mid-winter.

I wore a coat to go for a walk this morning and had to take it off, it was too warm. Jumper weather today in the south, but not coat.

EerieDemeanour · 29/10/2026 11:44

I'm always astonished at how many people are out wearing coats in spring and autumn when IMO it is still far too mild to need them. So far this autumn I have only worn them for rain protection (SE England). Some of my colleagues wear them to drive to work which astonishes me (we park right outside the door) as I can't drive comfortably in a coat and get far too hot. I have got a fair few because when I do wear them I want the right sort (thin, thicker, smart, casual, shower-proof, full waterproof) but they don't get much wear each. I did buy a few in between jackets a couple of years ago (denim, linen) but I just don't wear them need to get them onto vinted.

AllFadestoBlack · 29/10/2026 11:45

I have many jackets! I couldn't imagine doing the school run without one. I think the only time I would go without (excluding warm summer days) is on a trip to a shopping centre where I'll be indoors. Even then I'd probably keep one in the car.

Also Scotland, so a sunny morning doesn't mean a dry afternoon.

BluebellBeth · 29/10/2026 11:47

I've always hated wearing coats I just get too hot if walking around in one and it's too many layers.

Smittenkitchen · 29/10/2026 11:49

I like in a warm country and I can't believe how little clothing I see people wearing in the UK. I have acclimatised to where I live and now find it harder to tolerate being cold but I remember being a teenager in the UK and we wouldn't dress very warmly at all!

DeafLeppard · 29/10/2026 11:49

It’s so mild! And I don’t really have a coat needing life. I cycle to work - so have a technical cycle jacket thing, which gets the most use, and a puffa for when it’s cold. But I really want a lovely smart wool coat -think Max Mara style - and I can’t justify it because I’d wear it about twice a year at most. I don’t spend that much time outdoors in a way that needs a range of coats. And if I’m walking around town I tend to be in and out of shops, so it’s easy to overheat.

TheLastSilverSaint · 29/10/2026 11:49

I live in a city and see plenty of coats.

HatethedarknightsQW · 29/10/2026 11:51

Live in the North West, everyone wears coats (or waterproofs) apart from some younger people who I think haven't discovered yet that a cotton hoody doesn't keep you dry.

I wear a woollen coat to work on the days that it's not raining - so 90% of the time I've got a waterproof coat on.

I like a coat -as I can look quite smart - while being a total scruff underneath it.

EveningSpread · 29/10/2026 11:51

I have too many coats and I’m a millennial!

Three summer jackets, three spring/autumn long coats, one smart lightweight waterproof, one walking waterproof, one down jacket, and one smart winter coat, and one warm and waterproof winter coat!

They are all so great, I love coats and jackets and layering. I am always cold!

DemBonesDemBones · 29/10/2026 11:54

Live in Scotland, can’t relate 😆

superstarz · 29/10/2026 11:57

I’m a millennial and do not know anyone who doesn’t wear a coat

Until you breakdown on the motorway and have to wait for hours in the dark & rain.
Then you wish you’d taken a coat!

As someone who works in schools and wore a blazer to school, coats are worn and I don’t know a school where you remove your coat before going in.

Woojihoon · 29/10/2026 12:01

I only wear a coat when I'm dog walking or if we're going to be outside for a prolonged period in the winter.

I am always hot as a rule so I don't wear a coat when driving, in the supermarket, going from car to shop/restaurant or even walking round town in and out of shops. I hate overheating then having to carry a coat.

I am most likely to be wearing layers with either a denim jacket or a blazer in the autumn/winter.

I am looking at getting a decent 'smart' coat that will last me several years for the odd occasion. Last year we went to a funeral in December and I didn't have anything smart enough. I hadn't accounted for standing outside the crematorium for half an hour afterwards and was freezing.

I never wear a coat in the car but it doesn't mean I don't have one with me, I always have at least a waterproof and something warm (plus hi-vis gilet) in the car, just hate wearing them to drive in.
