Does no one wear a coat any more? – have you noticed this too?

So I am really not a big coat person. Apart from a short waterproof badged with my club that I wear when my summer officiating role includes a rainy day, I own one coat – a 5yo Seasalt rainproof coat with a hood and a cosy lining.

The main times I am outdoors tbh in cold or rain are a) watching DS play his sport or b) when I am out at an event (Christmas craft fair, trip to concert or theatre) or on a winter city break where I use public transport. Otherwise I drive to work (not accessible any other way unless you live close enough to walk).

Maybe that's it. I mean I think of myself as a coat refuser but even I wore one to work yesterday – it’s almost November, chilly and possibly rainy. But when I put it on the coat stand and then took it off at the end of the day, there was only one other coat there.

So do Gen Zs and Millennials (I am neither but there are lots at my work) just not wear coats any more? Any thoughts?

In Scotland and I very rarely meet anyone outside not wearing a coat even in the height of summer. I own a ridiculous amount of them but have a ‘big coat’ that I tend to put on in October and keep on until at least April, so do most folk I know.

I am not sure where people are living who think the weather is mild. The temps have been as low as 5 in EOE this month and at almost 8.30am this morning it’s not yet 7 degrees. Are you just going outside at mid day when it’s generally been considerably warmer?

Tbf it has not been cold here in general (Midlands) this week and last.

Couple of times I have been in the car and the temp has been 15 degrees (not at 2pm either, I mean at 10am) which is wild for late October.

It was 8 degrees at 7am today which again feels fairly high for this time of year. When I was younger we would have had the first few frosts by now I think.

It's about 4-10 degrees in Sweden and I've seen anything from full-length puffer jackets to people walking out and about in t-shirts and shorts. Personally, I think it's still a bit too early for coats. A t-shirt, jeans, and maybe a fleece vest is good enough for me for now.

Does Sweden get dry cold low humidity or damp cold high humidity?

This week has been cold n damp in Central Scotland. Next week will be about 8deg but dryer.

@clary Climate change is a factor. First, I think some people may be embracing the cold after the insufferable summer we had. Second, some of these autumn days have been warmer than usual.

As for boys and young men; some of them intentionally don't wear coats to convey that they are hard men who are immune to the weather. That's why they also run around wearing shorts in the middle of winter. I find the idea of not wearing warm clothing to convey a "tough guy" image absolutely cringe-inducing, but that's what some men are doing.

I honestly don't think its that, I've a primary age boy who hates trousers, so unless its actually snowing i can't be bothered fighting over it.

@clary I would feel cold without a coat with temperatures in the mid teens. There is no way I could walk a dog for even 10 mins without a coat or jacket of some description at this time of year, let alone for 30 mins. I have not even seen male dog walkers on a morning without a jacket, coat or waterproof, although plenty dashing from the car to the supermarket without one and wearing shorts.

I guess those of you who find the current temperatures mild save a fortune on heating costs as well.

I wear coats all year round other than in the heat wave. Because I love fashion and style, and coats and jackets can be beautiful!

Ah @Applepiewithcream that's interesting. In the last week or two I have found a hoody is plenty if not too much when out walking briskly (not a thing I do a lot as no dog and drive to work).

Yesterday I went to the gym at lunchtime (by car tbf) and had forgotten a hoody so walked from car park into gym (I mean like 2 mins walk) in just my T shirt but I was totally fine. It was mild here tho but to me that's mid-teens in Oct. Some of us are cooler and some warmer for sure.

I'm not sure if I didn't articulate myself well or your comprehension skills are lacking. There's no peer pressure involved. He literally doesn't notice the weather or think about it when getting dressed. It's not a deliberate act or statement.

I knew what you meant. That poster often posts gratuitously unpleasant comments. My young adults are often like you describe, just grab whatever jacket they see without even thinking about the weather!

I’m in Scotland , and I own a few coats of different weights but I’m old 😆and have collected them over many years .
I really dislike being too warm hence the coats being different weights and some are rainproof , some aren’t , some are a bit smarter some are very casual and I use for dog walks .
The last one I bought was for a funeral so it’s a dark green wool 3/4 length semi smart coat

I come from Newcastle! Noone wears coats there. I was back home a few years ago and went into the city centre to meet old school friends. It was cold. I had my big coat, the locals wore none!
