Can't sell designer plus sized clothes, what would you do?

I've always sold my clothes on eBay or through resale boutiques but they're just not shifting.

Due to my career in fashion and beauty they are brands such as Max Mara, Ralph Lauren and Dolce Gabanna.

I have lost a lot of weight and where my clothes used to get snapped up they have practically no Interest. I'm asking about 20% of what I paid.

The dress agency has said that since WLJ she has no call for the bigger sizes.
I know that approximately 10% of the population are on these drugs (source Good Housekeeping magazine). I would have taken them myself if I hadn't been poorly.

I'm about to move and was hoping to not take them with me. They are four sizes too big so can't easily be altered .
Has anybody had any luck selling their clothes or have I missed the boat?

Have you tried Vestiaire? Vinted?

Vinted?

Mrsredlipstick · 21/10/2026 06:38

I'm about to try the designer thread on vinted.
However I put some M and S on vinted and it didn't sell.
The DH thinks it's the mild weather as most of the items are coats or wool items. I don't buy polyester.

I guess it depends on how much work you want to put in. At this point, I would just donate them.

SethAndReubenTooSendGaloshes · 21/10/2026 06:44

Most things will sell at the right price

It'll be the price.

Just donate them to charity. When they have high end stuff they have special outlets or an online site.

Franxi · 21/10/2026 06:50

How much are you selling things for as I think 20% might be a bit unrealistic? I don’t know if Vinted count those brands as designer, I’ve just sold them normally on Vinted (well Max Mara anyway). I’ve sold wool coats for around £50 and silk tops for around £20, which seems to be the going rate these days. Also it really depends on the style and era.

I think it’s more that the market is flooded with second hand clothes due to Vinted’s popularity.

Mrsredlipstick · 21/10/2026 06:52

I've donated 21 black sacks to charity.
These are £1000 coats. I'm asking £150 tops!
Two years old, worn once.

At one point I had over 500 items of clothing.
I've never had a problem selling anything, 100% feedback.
I wanted to know if others had, had the same experience.

Well, if people aren't interested there's nothing you can do other than reduce the price.

Mrsredlipstick · 21/10/2026 06:54

@Franxi that's very helpful, thank you.

Yes. You need to reduce the price. It all comes down to how much you want the items gone OP. X

I think those are fair points.

Smittenkitchen · 21/10/2026 06:59

I wonder if you are specifying in the product description that they are from very recent collections because with that in mind, the price doesn't seem far off. (I only know about Vinted, not sure how things sell on eBay nowadays).

Followthesunshine · 21/10/2026 07:03

I buy and sell on vinted. My limit for purchases on vinted is around £80 because there is a risk in purchasing clothes I haven't been able to try on that they won't fit and so many clothes are advertised as 'worn only a couple of times' but I don't know that. I have to be able to sell them on and not be significantly out of pocket if they don't fit. So even if full price the item is £1000, £150 is still a lot of money. After all its still second hand clothes when you get down to it no matter how nice the label. You also are working from a smaller market given they are plus size. As always, its the price.

Babayagahaha · 21/10/2026 07:07

£150 is a lot for a second hand coat regardless of the brand. Reduce the price.

Mrsredlipstick · 21/10/2026 07:09

Just to add some context I was a size 22/24.
In a company of say 50 people there would have been 4/5 overweight people.
After two years out of the job market I am not seeing many people that are larger. Which is great for them and their health.
Perhaps there are just not enough people in that category to be interested?
Somebody mentioned on another thread that larger clothes get snapped up in Australia?

Same here after I lost 6 stone even the charity shops locally refused my clothrs. Even the brand new ones. They said there was little interest in plus size now.
I lost my weight on MJ. The private hospital bariatric department that did my original gastric band which has since been removed has shut down. They said they arent getting enough custom since MJ came along.
Looks like its changing the shape of the fashion industry literally.

Traceyatnumber32isaloudgobshite · 21/10/2026 07:16

Pricing. As pp said when buyingboff Vinted you don't actually know the real condition. Not everyone is honest. The amount of New without tags items I have bought that have actually got wear and tear damage is shocking. Everyone now knows Vinted has very little customer support or care so every item you buy is a risk of some sort, which effects the price people will pay. Add on to that all the other issues like not knowing if it fits properly, if its a separate does it actually look good with what you hope it might, is the colour in the photo the actual same shade etc etc. Resale potential has to be considered.
I sell on vinted too and am as honest as I can be. I start pricing a bit higher than I hope to achieve, expecting lower offers. After a period of time I will lower the price maybexa week or so before I bag it up for charity.

Price it lower on Vinted and see how you get on...lower has to be better than zero, if you take it straight to charity.

Mrsredlipstick · 21/10/2026 07:24

@Gettingbysomehow
Your response is really insightful.

I've worked in the charity sector and historically they've snapped my hand off for bigger clothes (we're rural , horsey so bigger ladies usually!).
I too have lost just over six stone. Mine was illness but I'd been slim nearly all my life prior to a massive steroid weight gain.
I noticed one big person in the last month and that was it!
It is amazing but I do want to sell these very expensive clothes. I need new ones myself.

What size coats? I’d love an oversized max mara coat

Mrsredlipstick · 21/10/2026 07:28

@Gettingbysomehow I understand body plastic surgery is where the money is now. Two of my friends are having it. Not for me but each to their own.
One has had a face lift the other is having a 'fleur de lys'.

It’s the price. If you’re willing to give clothes to charity why wouldn’t you reduce the price at least then you’d get something? At this time of year coats go fast I’ve found so if you’re not having much interest it’s the price.
