Can't sell designer plus sized clothes, what would you do?

I've always sold my clothes on eBay or through resale boutiques but they're just not shifting.

Due to my career in fashion and beauty they are brands such as Max Mara, Ralph Lauren and Dolce Gabanna.

I have lost a lot of weight and where my clothes used to get snapped up they have practically no Interest. I'm asking about 20% of what I paid.

The dress agency has said that since WLJ she has no call for the bigger sizes.
I know that approximately 10% of the population are on these drugs (source Good Housekeeping magazine). I would have taken them myself if I hadn't been poorly.

I'm about to move and was hoping to not take them with me. They are four sizes too big so can't easily be altered .
Has anybody had any luck selling their clothes or have I missed the boat?

I've donated 21 black sacks to charity.
These are £1000 coats. I'm asking £150 tops!
Two years old, worn once.

At one point I had over 500 items of clothing.
I've never had a problem selling anything, 100% feedback.
I wanted to know if others had, had the same experience.

Everything has slowed. People are broke and worried about the future so designer clothes are probably the last thing on their minds. I used to go out a lot with ppl for meals and coffee etc but ppl are really cutting back atm.

I don't think I would pay £150 for a second hand coat. Could get a nice new one for that or a bit more.

I've just had a quick look. There are Dolce and Gabbana coats listed for £50 so I think £150 is too much.

senua · 21/10/2026 10:28

That may not come across as positively as you think it does. You've seen the thing in the flesh (the fabric, the cut, the colour, the drape, etc), worn it once and then never again! Would you spend £150 on something that has been so totally rejected?
Does your advertisement explain your background story?

Mrsredlipstick · 21/10/2026 10:35

@Senu it's does. I've lost 6 stone plus.
I'd love to wear these clothes but they are just too big.
I'm not giving the medical reason for my weight loss as I haven't actually told that many people. It could hinder my job search if I did.

When any vinted posts say they're selling for weight loss it can come across as a bit smug. 'I'm far too small for these now but you might like them you big fatty.'

Also no matter how much they cost originally £150 is a lot of money and I would never buy anything that expensive when I couldn't feel the fabric or return it if I didn't like it.

Mrsredlipstick · 21/10/2026 10:57

People can think the clothes are being sold re a bereavement that's why I say weight loss.

They're not high fashion, they're luxury items.
I've been selling on eBay for 20 years it's just not selling now.
Posters have been very helpful re the market.
I'm still buying on eBay. I bought a £700 coat last week but I know the brand and it fits me.

If you have a lot to sell how about Watnot live auction site? Don’t know the terms and condition but loads of does stuff on there!

bungobungobungo · 21/10/2026 11:17

Whatnot. Does = designer.

CortieTat · 21/10/2026 11:40

I think UK is a bit unusual with the wariness of second hand clothes (my opinion is based on the unrepresentative sample of Mumsnet), I have no problem selling and buying things more expensive than £150 on vinted but it’s not vinted UK.

I think it’s either the size or (potentially) the clothes are not fashionable right now? I think the price of 20% retail is very reasonable, I sold two items last week at 30% retail and they went quickly without haggling, October and November are good months to sell wool. I would definitely buy a good quality, classic wool coat for £150, so there must be buyers like me out there.

Good photos , detailed descriptions and flat measurements are very important on vinted. I would not buy anything without basic information, even £1 would be too much if it’s wasted on something that doesn’t fit and generated emissions from transport.

I'm not suggesting full medical history, just a "I'm not selling these because I don't love them; it's just I've changed shape".Smile
Where do all these clothes go? I've been looking in charity shops, thinking that there will be a glut of donated larger-sized clothing, but they are not there.

newbie202020 · 21/10/2026 11:54

Have you tried changing your location on Vinted to a European country? Not sure if that might help bump you up the listings a bit in that country?

FillerTrackOnTheAlbumOfLife · 21/10/2026 11:57

I would personally avoid mentioning weight loss. It's a bit depressing for the person buying to read this, it gives a mental picture of a lovely svelte person binning off their 'fat clothes', it just doesn't set up the mindset you need in a buyer - yes, this is just what I need, I will look fabulous in this.

You are not obliged to give a reason for selling - I would keep to a description of the clothes and their condition and as pp have said, comprehensive measurements and whether the fabric has any stretch.

peanutbutterlife · 21/10/2026 11:59

I would be interested in a link (size 18, 5ft 11)
if they’re designer do they come up small as well? That’s what I would be thinking

Mrsredlipstick · 21/10/2026 12:05

Bless you @peanutbutterlife I'm 16/18 and 5' 10" so I'm not selling those yet. I'm buying my new wardrobe off eBay. I think I get better quality and natural fibres.

They don't come up small. Max Mara/ Marina Rinaldi is pretty much spot on. They can be quite long though. I've got some coats at 50 inches.

Your attitude to your clothes sounds lovely OP, and your wardrobe sounds like a treasure trove.
There are some of us plus sized still around, I'd love a link.
Agree with PP regarding a tailors dummy for photos. Also agree it ultimately comes down to price.

PigletJohn · 21/10/2026 12:09

I think the people who buy naice stuff are also the people who buy fat jabs.

RachelshouldhavegonetoParis · 21/10/2026 12:10

I would quite happily spend £150 on a good condition size 22 Max Mara coat

Mrsredlipstick · 21/10/2026 12:12

@RachelshouldhavegonetoParis
What colour do you need/ want?
I've got 17! 😁

I'm plus sized and I buy on ebay - much more rarely on Vinted because the clothes sizing / description can be so strange on there. Would you be willing to share the name of your ebay shop so people on this thread could have a look ?

Honestly, I was thinking that! Or that you have shady connections with delivery firms where parcels go "missing" from brand to customer!

Out of interest, did you pay for them all or were some gifts owing to work (being nosy, please don't reply if you don't want to)

FillerTrackOnTheAlbumOfLife · 21/10/2026 12:18

PigletJohn · 21/10/2026 12:09

I think the people who buy naice stuff are also the people who buy fat jabs.

Not everyone can buy WLI. Even on private prescriptions, some health conditions rule them out.

Also, assuming that someone is going to have to take the jabs for at least six months to reach their target weight, the cost of that is going to be much dearer than buying a few secondhand designer pieces.

Finally, it shouldn't be assumed that everyone who is plus size wants to lose weight. Some people are happy or accepting of their weight, or have other priorities in life.

Mrsredlipstick · 21/10/2026 12:22

@SheilaFentiman I bought them all. Some of my bags were gifts. As I said up thread I had a difficult childhood with very little.
I had a huge international career so had to travel and compete with men. My clothes have been my armour. I'd waltz in and they would fish gawp. I'm nearly six foot and I'm a big personality. My staff are usually all women so it's about the glamour. Think television presenter.
I once went into Harrods in a particular outfit and people were coming up to stroke my coat ( sold that one years ago).
I give loads away. I wanted a few pennies as I am moving which has been very difficult. We lost a shed load of money there.
