School Ski trip gear

Hello,

I was looking for advice on what brands etc to buy for my daughter's upcoming school ski trip. We aren't a family who have a lot of money and weve made sacrifices for her to go on the trip so any suggestions that are budget friendly but she won't feel like the odd one out put that do the job and keep her warm would be much appreciated. I feel overwhelmed and out of my comfort zone with it all. TIA
Here is the list I've been sent:
Ski Jacket – wear on the journey x1
Sallopettes (ski trouses) x1
Thermal top x 3-5
Thermal bottoms x 3-5
Tshirts for skiing x 5
Ski Socks x 5
Ski Goggles x1
Ski Gloves x1
Quarter zips/fleeces/jumpers for under ski jack x3
Neck warmers

Vinted is your best friend!!! I get all my families ski gear from there
Topshop and ASOS even do their own ski wear I got from vinted - a lovely all in one with flared bottoms. So lovely on.
Decathlon and Mountain warehouse
Spyder, Colombia, Montec good brands to find second hand

You can buy Nikwax waterproofing wash and wash everything you get secondhand to ensure it's still waterproof

Only need 3 pairs of ski socks, decathlons are fine. Only need 1 or 2 thermal tops and bottoms if they are wicking and merino wool. Get good quality basics if you can. She definitely needs a mid layer fleece or two, even if she’s skiing in April (but 100 need at least 2 fleeces if Jan/Feb)

have a look on vinted if you don’t want to spend much. Else decathlon is fine. Tres pas and dare2b often have sales, I’ve just bought my daughters coats for £25 each that were previously £100 in the sale.
neck warmers you’ll want a buff (Amazon will be fine) and a fleece lined one.
mid reccomend a second pair of gloves (ideally mittens) as if they get wet she’ll be miserable!!

Rozbos · Yesterday 19:46

Agree, vinted or decathalon. No one cares where your stuff is from.

Lidl actually does ski middle of the aisle sections ans they are great for goggles and thermals
Get thermal layers from mountain warehouse or I used thermal leggings from costco and was fine with those, again a thermal top from Lidl. A neck/face covering is great too
Roxy is another teen girl brand, lovely bits
I got lots from Facebook marketplace too for the kids

When is the trip? Aldi certainly used to sell thermals and goggles etc,, but I suspect that is in Jan or Feb. I’d get on eBay or vinted and ask around at school/local social media if you know parents with older kids. My daughter’s school used to do ski-kit and uniform sales in the Autumn/Spring terms (check whether yours does).

Are the school not doing an info evening with a ski clothes supplier? They usually have ski wear you can rent if you want and they will go through what you really need to take. There is usually a hoody that they need to have to identify them belonging to their school. And helmet hire of course

Uniqlo heat tech are good for thermals but you can get away with sports leggings and a long sleeve t-shirt if it’s a mid altitude station in the alps so not going to be that cold. 2 bottoms max but I’d personally get her a clean too for every day as it can be surprisingly sweaty if learning and she won’t want to smell. Hoody is also fine in place of a fleece or anything technical. Ski socks and gloves go to decathlon. Get 2 pairs of gloves so she can swap if they get overly wet or she loses one. Neck warmer - get a Buff from amazon. For the jacket and ski trousers do not touch anything from ASOS, Zara, Topshop etc. because the waterproofing won’t be up to standard. Roxy do really nice teen stuff that isn’t too expensive. Vinted can be good but look for ‘snow’ brands. Decathlon also fine.

I’ve been to those in the past and they were terribly expensive tbh. That’s not to say that they all are in every school but it certainly didn’t work for our area (west Wales)

Lidl and Aldi will have ski-wear in their ‘aisles of randomness’ this autumn, usually mid November. It is good quality and perfectly adequate for novice skiers.
Ski Direct and Decathlon have good and reasonably priced ski-wear, online if you aren’t near a shop, so do Mountain Warehouse.
Skiwear sizes do seem to come small IME, and are better not too tight to allow for movement, so you might have to get a size larger than ordinary clothes.
Also worth asking about recommended footwear, depending on what resort they are going to and what activities ‘apres-ski’, she might need snow boots.

We ski a lot and get everything from Vinted, there really is no point buying new. Worth getting merino wool thermals, use t shirts and jumpers you’ve already got.

Oh I don’t think you need to buy anything from them (we didn’t) although the hoody is often compulsory. But like I said, you can hire stuff if you want and we found it useful in terms of information of what was useful and what wasn’t

Sober23 · Yesterday 20:07

Go outdoors and TK MAX are good for random stuff but yes, Lidl and Aldi do great basics base layers, kids ski wear and gloves. Also your school may have a Facebook page where you can ask for preloved stuff?

Hope she has a great time.

My eldest DD went on the ski trip a few years ago and said she only wore the goggles once, she preferred to use sunglasses instead. I got her a warm jacket from Superdry for skiing and the evening activities with lots of pockets for snacks, ski pass etc.

griola · Yesterday 20:27

Are thermals a must? How about normal tee and fleece?

Can’t skip goggles. She’ll need them if it snows. Which it probably will at least one of the days. Could snow every day. Decathlon will have good value ones.

Yeah this what my teen nieces wear. With a t-shirt then a hoody on top. I wouldn’t consider thermals necessary assuming this is the Alps and not Canada or somewhere really, really cold.

The thermals don’t have to be merino but they do really need to be a technical sweat wicking fabric. So sports leggings or thermals are fine, but you need a thermal top as well. T-shirts can get wet if sweaty and will stay wet and get cold

can you easily wear glasses under googles or are contact lenses better?

You can get goggles that accommodate glasses, but my DS decided that would master contact lenses before he went as he personally found glasses uncomfortable. Some of his friends were fine though. You really need to try the goggles
and see how you get on. As an aside, it was a good thing for my DS that he got on with contacts as he ha previously been (accidentally) hit in the face by a ball at lunchtime and had broken his glasses 😆

Thanks so much for your suggestions. She's going to a place called Bormeo in Italy at the end of Feb. It's a school in a fairly deprived area and they've never done anything like this before. Another school that belongs to the same trust has kindly said they will take some of the kids from our school on their annual ski trip.
If anyone could send me a few links to the sort of items I should be buying then I'll look on Vinted for the bargains. I'm particularly stressing about the thermals. Thank you

Also, what is a neck warmer? Are there any particular fleeces you recommend?
