This cardigan wouldn't be a good buy, would it? :(

I tried this on yesterday - it looks great on, really suits me and I would get a lot of wear out of it.

But I hesitated buying because, at nearly 100% man-made fibres, it's going to look scruffy really quickly isn't it? Or might it be ok? Does anyone have it? How is it holding up?

I can't actually wear wool (even cashmere) right next to my skin as I find it too irritating. This felt fine (because it's only about 0.01% wool!), so it would be especially handy in that regard as I can wear it over short-sleeve things or thinner long-sleeve tops. But I just don't think I can bring myself to spend £65 on something made of acrylic and that will look shabby after a few wears/ washes.

I recommend a cotton cardigan from m+s. I'm wearing one right now and I have about 4 in different colours. You'd save money too.

DD had tons of stuff from Oliver Bonas. I've never looked at the labels but it wears and washes really well, and has a quirkiness.

FlappicusSmith · Yesterday 18:11

Thanks. I have a few thinner cardigans already - the appeal of this one is it's a bit chunkier and more autumnal and warmer.

Oh thanks - that's good to know. Maybe I'll give it a punt then

I have it when this happens - something is lovely, and very suitable, but the content means it’s a no. Happens to me more with polyester but sympathise enormously. Have you tried merino? My very sensitive to wool dh can manage that, or cotton/cashmere blends.

backformoreofthesame · Yesterday 18:20

How often do you really need to wash a cardie?

Justkeepchasingpigeonss · Yesterday 18:23

I also have a few Oliver Bonas knitwear pieces that have, so far, washed fine. I’ve had them about 3 or 4 years.

Smartiepants79 · Yesterday 18:25

I agree that the few things I own from Oliver Bonas have worn very well. If you love it and think you’ll get lots of wear out of it I’d go for it. £65 is not cheap exactly but it’s not hugely expensive for something you’ll wear a lot.

ClaudeHopper · Yesterday 18:27

I can’t bear acrylic, but I think it would probably wash well. Man made fibres can be chucked in the washer and dryer without care.

IThinkThereforeIPaint · Yesterday 18:28

I have one from there without natural fibre and it's been fine.

I know this is probably rhetorical but I think it depends where you wear it but I usually do every other wear… although I can’t stand the smell of perfume still on my clothes!!! Some materials cling onto the smell more.

OP, if it feels nice/good quality then I say go for it - how are the reviews?

ginasevern · Yesterday 18:34

How often would you need to wash it? I can't wear wool at all, not even 0.1% or merino or cashmere. And not even with a top underneath. It's so difficult to find anything a bit different.

momager22 · Yesterday 18:36

Uniqlo do thicker cotton cardigans.
I Wouldn’t pay that much for an item made from plastic out of principle. I also get very clammy in acrylic in my phase of life.

Makebelieveanotherlife · Yesterday 18:44

You’ll feel hot and sweaty. I wouldn’t touch this. Rather look at Uniqlo. Their stuff keeps really well

Allseeingallknowing · Yesterday 18:45

It’ll go bobbly !

FlappicusSmith · Yesterday 19:16

Divided opinions!

I don't particularly have an issue with made-made fibres making me hot and sweaty (despite also being at 'that stage of life' @momager22).

I also don't wash my knitwear all that often... I don't wear perfume (in part because I don't like how it lingers in clothing)... It is the potential bobbling that is making me hesitate though. While I have a de-bobbler, I feel that it doesn't work that well on acrylic stuff.

It was really the combo of cut and colour on this one that just worked on me. I'm a big Uniqlo fan @momager22 and have lots of their merino, but this fits a different function I think. Their chunkier ones are lambswool, which I can't wear (even over long-sleeve tops), nothing that ticks the box in cotton at this time of year.

Only a few reviews @wifty, all but one positive. But I'm guessing no one has had it long enough to realise any issues with bobbling, etc.

I am literally talking myself into it as I type!

I love the look of the M&S ones @Kingdomofsleep and wondered what size/chest size you are? I am not wanting in the boob department and notice all the models are quite small chested in the photos and wondered how it sits on an ample chest.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · Yesterday 19:47

I think if you don’t over-wash it, it might be fine. I have a set of combs that I got for knitwear - one for wool and one for other fibres that’s helping me keep on top of bobbling. That’s really helping keeping my knitwear in good condition.

Shoobadadoo · Yesterday 20:35

Yeah I had one from & other stories. It went in the fabric recycle bin after 5 months. It bobbled every time I debobbled it. Hourly

whatsnewbuttercup · Yesterday 20:47

Regarding how often to wash a cardigan, if it’s worn buttoned up, as a jumper and next to your skin, it needs washing after every wear.

Edited

I am a size 10-12 and I get a medium or a 12, but I hate a tight cardigan because I don't like gaps between buttons. They are so comfy I could sleep in them

Stoptheraintoday · Yesterday 21:05

Thanks @Kingdomofsleep I'm a 12 too and hate the if my chest is pushing on the buttons so they gape a bit.
I'll take myself to M&S and try some on as they look lovely.
