This cardigan wouldn't be a good buy, would it? :(

I tried this on yesterday - it looks great on, really suits me and I would get a lot of wear out of it.

But I hesitated buying because, at nearly 100% man-made fibres, it's going to look scruffy really quickly isn't it? Or might it be ok? Does anyone have it? How is it holding up?

I can't actually wear wool (even cashmere) right next to my skin as I find it too irritating. This felt fine (because it's only about 0.01% wool!), so it would be especially handy in that regard as I can wear it over short-sleeve things or thinner long-sleeve tops. But I just don't think I can bring myself to spend £65 on something made of acrylic and that will look shabby after a few wears/ washes.

I rarely recommend Sézane (I think they are way overrated for the quality they deliver) but they had a cardigan in a slightly similar style over a year (or two) ago. It’s slouchy, fluffy and kind of hangs (at least on me) because it’s open. It’s called Ambra.

I have this cardigan and it’s extremely hard wearing, I bought it for a full price and my wardrobe app tells me that I wore it 50 times and got CPW down to under 3 pounds (30 kr) and it looks new, no bobbling, beautiful fluffy yarn. It’s also zero plastic (only mohair and merino) and made in Spain. It might be worth looking for it on Vinted.

CortieTat · 04/10/2026 21:16

Of course it is beyond Sézane to show how their clothes look like, but I had my Ambra cardi rendered by AI based on my own bad photos and it looks like this:

My wardrobe is heaving with OB, love it and most of it washes well, however, I have that cardigan from last year in a deep red and it definitely bobbled faster than I thought it would. I’d have a look on Vinted see if you can get it cheaper, also they tend to put stock on sale pretty frequently as well!

Sorry, but those are hideous!

Ah, alas I can't wear mohair at all. Even with something long-sleeved underneath it irritates my skin.

I recommend a cotton cardigan from m+s. I'm wearing one right now and I have about 4 in different colours. You'd save money too.

I’ve got those too!

Divebar2021 · 04/10/2026 23:28

God I’ve got a pink sweater from Oliver Bonas that washed like absolute shit. It looks like a dish rag. The shape is nice but the quality is awful. I’m not buying anymore synthetic sweaters even when they’re second hand because they never end up looking good. I have various merino wool and cashmere sweaters that I can throw in the washing machine that look pristine.

Why are we not washing our cardigans as often as our jumpers etc?

Yello24 · Yesterday 09:01

Tried H&M? . Or New Look? DD has similar from one of those places and it looks fine and was half that price.

OvernightBloats · Yesterday 09:05

I really like it. The length, colour and style. Order it and then decide once you have tried it on.

dudsville · Yesterday 09:31

Good quality knitwear can bobble! It's about the fibres and friction points and whatnot. My Mum likes man made fibers but I haven't worn the since my hormonal early 20s when they just didn't suit my chemistry. That's a cute cardigan, sounds like you might love it. Go for it!

DD had tons of stuff from Oliver Bonas. I've never looked at the labels but it wears and washes really well, and has a quirkiness.

Ive got s woolly cardi from OB and it's washed well, not gone wobbly at all. Looks fresh after 2/3 years.

Because we usually don’t wear them next to our skin. I wash them - and jumpers as little as possible because it’s really bad for them.

Fair! I don’t wear long sleeved tops under my jumpers/cardigans so maybe that’s why! Usually wear a vest top under a cardigan

Merula · Yesterday 13:39

I was tempted by this cardi too. I tried it on and really liked it, but I decided against it because I had a similar cardi from Oliver Bonas that I only wore a few times before it looked so tatty. I do like their clothes, but some of the fabrics do not stay looking good for long.

FlappicusSmith · Yesterday 19:14

Oh no @Divebar2021 & @Merula - that doesn't sound very promising.

I have ordered it, and will decide once it arrives... Will also check out H&M, etc, @Yello24

I bought this one Taupe Fisherman Rib Crew Neck Knitted Cardigan | Oliver Bonas now sold out. |It does have 12 percent mohair but has bobbled very little.

Sandinyourshoes · Yesterday 22:17

Or you could wear a hoodie. The material is non irritating and there's no stitches to get pulled, or bobble. I got a whole load of men's ones years ago. Lovely and soft and fleecy lined. Just throw them in the washing machine when you get ketchup down the front! (which happens regularly to me).

I saw that cardi the other day and really liked it, but the price for a synthetic knit - no. But I am lucky and can wear wool, mohair etc no bother.

What about the UO cardigan linked above? I have a few of these in different colours that I wear to work, and yes, the wool percentage is low but the price is much better. I think (having seen the OB one in store and owning the UO one) that they are pretty similar? I wash them on a wool cycle and they have bobbled a bit, particularly where my work badge rubs on its lanyard, but a couple of mine are now into their third winter and are perfectly wearable.
