What does the best dressed mum at your school gate wear? And where in the country are you?

Posting in the spirit of curiosity and inspiration!

I can safely say, that many years after my son left prep school, I can’t remember a single mother, let alone what they wore. It is so much easier to just not give a fuck. If you are happy in your own skin, that is all that matters.

This is what I do lol and I get judged. I do it because I'm a single parent with no childcare or support (literally zero, they've never spent a night or any time out of my care except for nursery, when i'm at work) and therefore have no time to myself to go out to nice places and wear my nice clothes. But why deprive myself of being able to wear them? So I just wear them every day. It feels good. I get judged but don't care tbqh.

The irony of some comments saying they hate people judging other mums for not making an effort on the school run, but in the same breath judge others for choosing to dress nicely. Sad really.

We have two or three horsey ones in our village so mornings they will be in working jods and weather proof jacket or polo shirt.

Afternoons very varied, jersey dress to jeans.

I love this! I also don’t have many occasions to wear “best” clothes, there’s nothing wrong with wearing them on a normal day instead

I was just about to write the same as you have written.

It's 30 years since I dropped off and picked up a child from school, but I'd would have been hard pressed to have told you what anyone was wearing or what type of bag they were carrying.

I enjoy looking at what people are wearing on the school run - no judging, just noticing and there are lots of people to look at - I love clothes.

There is a mix of everything really, lots of trainers and gym leggings, jeans and tops, smarter office wear and most people wear a mix depending on what day it is and where they are working.

Honestly OP how dare you ask a question about style on the S&B board, what were you thinking?! Didn’t you know any question about school runs automatically gets people’s backs up for some unknown reason?

I get it though, my school run days are long past but I like people watching and am fascinated and sometimes inspired by how other women choose to dress.

I don't find obsession with clothes, and more importantly judging what other people choose to wear, to be a good quality in a parent actually. I think instilling proper values in a child is the important thing. Not teaching them snobishness and judgement about the clothes that other people wear when going about their day to day activities.
And teaching them that clothes, like everything else, should be an individual choice and not a slavish blind following of what other people tell them is the " fashionable" thing to wear.

Agree. I think if the question had been “what does the most stylist woman in your office wear?” It wouldn’t have been so controversial but for me the two things are the same. It’s just asking about the women you see in real life every day, whose style do you admire and what do they wear? Location not relevant to me.

Honestly, most of our school mums look like complete chavs or scruffy...me included 😆.
In my defence I work in fields all day so I'm usually in muddy leggings and walking boot, I dress better once I get home!
I can't say the others have much of an excuse though, think juicy tracksuits, bleach blonde hair, huge eyelashes or clearly haven't got 2 pennies to rub together to buy clothes.
A few people I notice have lovely fitted winter coats so they look good but no one is going to win a best dressed as our school in afraid.

You are projecting a lot here. Were you bullied by someone at school for dressing differently or something? You just seem to be vehemently annoyed by the concept of fashion/other mothers caring about fashion.

No one has said anything about snobbishness or judgment - this has all come from you. I sense that perhaps you have low confidence, because your kneejerk reaction has been to accuse me of being a bad mother, “sick”, and “nasty”. It’s just all a bit mad.

I am actually an excellent parent to a disabled child. Child always looks ace in lots of bright colours and I can knock out an incredible world book day costume when required! I’m really happy with my parenting and really happy with my sense of style. Your posts don’t strike me as very happy at all.

This is true! I wonder what is going on psychologically that makes it being the school run so triggering for some posters.

I don’t know but it always happens on s&b threads when school run is mentioned. Remember the “school run dress” threads when someone would just ask about a nice easy dress to chuck on every day in the summer without thinking too much about it, but posters would get themselves all riled up thinking there was a suggestion that people should have a special outfit for the
School run!!

You need the house done professionally to get rid of moths. They fumigate the whole place several times, heat treat clothes etc. It does work. All our DIY attempts never worked.

Well most of the school mums at my kids school work so we are all dressed for work? Aren’t the ones at your child’s school?

I’m not disparaging interest in fashion itself. But to know who’s the best dressed mom or moms in school you have to be really standing around checking all the parents out, during whole drop off.
I mean most people get in and get out, no? So I’m amazed you have time for that.
i would not have asked the question if it was what’s best dressed person at your work wears because you naturally can observe lots of people during the workday. Or in friendship groups or whatever.

My child's school is very much the local village school and I would take an assumption most parents are just in "normal" jobs admin accounts etc the Mum uniform is therefore tidy well maintained but probably not stylish as such and it'll be the same for the men equivalent very much non descrip
