Do you plan / style / care about your gym / activewear as a wardrobe category?

I have realised that despite being very interested in style and fashion, my gym / running kit is a random assorted collection, acquired or gifted by DH without any consideration other than function. Some if it is so old, it’s cool again. All Nike, and a little Goodmove.

I have done some scrolling for inspiration - I have lived under the rock, there is so much nice stuff - from coords for every kind of activity to complimentary but not matching kit. Not sure if and what I am really going to do to up my game in this section. It maybe nice motivation for dark winter months not to get lazy.

Curious to hear if there is anyone here actively curating their activewear and what that looks like exactly - how much do you have, do you stick to a colour palette, do you mix or match? Brand / high street?

Nope, I wear any old rubbish, doesn’t bother me at all.

LostWord · 12/09/2026 11:37

Nah. I have to prioritise what I spend on and I’m not getting sucked into spending £80 on fashionable leggings.

I also actively don’t want to think about what I look like when I work out. It’s one of the few times in my day when I am focused on my strength and health and what my body can do, rather than what I look like. So fashion can piss off for an hour! 😆

A well fitted sports bra and comfortable trainers, then whatever is cheap or I have in a cupboard somewhere!

thedevilinablackdress · 12/09/2026 14:01

I think about it in the sense that I want things that are comfortable and breathable (am increasingly going off polyester gym gear). Definitely no curation, and any colour coordination is accidental.

TheChosenTwo · 12/09/2026 14:04

I care about it in the sense that I want what I wear to not impede my workout - my sweaty Betty leggings have turned out to be brilliant investments, they don’t budge and are totally squat proof. I’ve got multiple pairs of the power ones but all in plain black.
And I tend to wear a black tshirt, adidas/nike, whichever comes out of the drawer first.
I see a few women at the gym in matching sets looking lovely but I just don’t care about what I look like at the gym, I feel good just turning up 😂

sunnyfeet · 12/09/2026 14:05

I spend a lot of time at the gym so like to look half decent. I love Sweaty Betty but M&S And Next do perfectly decent alternatives at a better price

purpledagger · 12/09/2026 14:11

Most of my gym leggings are sweaty betty (but only when on offer). i have cycle short length, 7/8, long and thermal.

gym tops are from Lidl, as they are cheap and i’m less bothered about them. i have mainly short sleeve, but i have a couple of thermal ones.

Sports bras are M&S, as i need a lot of support due to my chest size. i never have my sports bras on show, so i choose comfort over style.

my gym wear isn’t coordinated, but i can mix and match as needed. i prioritise leggings over tops. i make sure i look presentable, but it’s comfort over style for me.

Katalica · 12/09/2026 14:13

I wear whatever’s cheap and fits. No-one’s going to be looking at me. 😂

SuperSugarHigh · 12/09/2026 14:20

I think ‘curate’ is possibly pushing it, but I have switched up from the random selection of leggings/DPs tshirts to a smaller number of really nice items. As PPs have said, sweaty Betty leggings are great, and I have a couple of their sleeveless gym tops too which are really flattering.

I have 3 x leggings, maybe two tops and then a couple of jumpers to wear on my way to the gym on colder days. Colours all roughly go together and it does give me a little extra boost at the gym being able to actually see the results of my hard work!

I do wear the leggings on non-gym days too as they look smarter than regular leggings, and there are often sales on, I don’t think I’ve bought any of them full price.

cathyandclaire · 12/09/2026 14:20

I've got lots of Swetty Betty stuff from Vinted but my favourites at the moment are from Tesco- the fabric is so good and the colours look expensive. Lots of people have commented- which has never happened to me before!

ThatPearlCat · 12/09/2026 14:24

Just about to up my gym style game too - currently in whatever I have around but going a lot more now kids are getting older so it would be nice to wear bits I love rather than ones that are just functional.
I wouldn't say I care what others think- I just love clothes and enjoy wearing nice ones. I will probably start creating a little collection via Vinted as not skint but not rich either.

Flymetothemoonplease · 12/09/2026 14:29

As a menopausal woman I firmly go for what’s not going to make me boil in the bag.
I love running tops from SOAR as they are light. I get running and gym shorts from amazon but I do spend on my running shoes ( probably too much)
Interesting that everyone seems to love sweaty Betty. They are the worst at making me feel I am going to roast to death, I have given all of that stuff to the charity shop.

Specialagentblond · 12/09/2026 14:36

I just picked a few colours that go well together and bought 3 x tops and leggings in those colours. I just wear whichever that comes to hand but they always look well together.

poundshopkardashians · 12/09/2026 14:37

Sweaty Betty and lululemon are the best brands for longevity. Buy on Vinted, saves a fortune.

OneOpalOwl · 12/09/2026 14:38

Yes I have gym outfits, I feel much better at the gym when I like what I‘m wearing! Now I think about it I probably put more thought into my gym outfits than normal outfits 😂

I have black, navy and brown leggings all from CRZ Yoga on Amazon. They are so nice to wear and wash really well. I do have two pairs from Gymshark too but I only wear them when the others are in the wash! I keep my Sweaty Betty leggings for general weekend wear.

I have a few different types of top depending on the activity - a few black loose vest tops, cream and grey baggy t shirts and grey, black, cream and brown tight t shirts (sweat wicking-y type). A mixture of Tesco, CRZ Yoga, Sweaty Betty, Lululemon and Primark.

If I’m going to yoga/pilates I usually wear long grey grippy socks but I have some of the low cut style socks too. I’m just going to Pilates or yoga I’ll wear Birkenstock style slip ons, but my running ASICS are pink and my general use ASICS are grey/silver.

I have a big teddy fleece for winter or will wear an Adanola sweatshirt.

TheLemonOtter · 12/09/2026 14:41

@Flymetothemoonplease , I get sweaty in sweaty betty power (though they are great for squats), but not in zero gravity.
I do match black to black or blue to blue, but that is about it! Have nice stuff from SB, addidas, and h and m move, would recommend!

Themsofcoffee · 12/09/2026 14:46

No other than to try and ensure the top and leggings go together.

Oh and I bought a sweaty betty top from a charity shop for £9 . Hopefully my fellow exercise class members notice that it's SB.😉

DailyPlanner · 12/09/2026 14:53

I do a mix of both.

When I run outside, especially in rain and winter, I need running shorts or running leggings that hold well. Couldn't care less what they look like, they'll end up covered in mud anyway. Any top will do. Got so many random tat (but perfectly suitable from Primark, Decathlon, given to finishers , nicer top past their age)

When it's sunny or when I am at the gym, I have a few matching sets that I like. I bought them, I chose things I liked the look of. Gym is just normal life, sometimes you can't be bothered, others you make an effort with your outfits.

Sweaty betty, Next, anywhere really.

Sports Bras, I can't find better than Shock Absorber.

Meadowfinch · 12/09/2026 14:56

No, my running kit needs to be super-comfortable and a variety of weights for different season.

My current kit is two pairs of adidas shorts from sports direct, one black, one green, two Parkrun t-shirts and an 10k event t-shirt in turquoise.

I have two pairs of Tesco leggings, green and black/white, a black waterproof running jacket and two sweatshirts of dubious heritage.

A pair of ASICS trainers, and some running gloves that are so old I've darned them more than once.

As long as it's comfy, that works for me. I throw my leggings when they lose their elasticity around the bum though. I hate leggings that sag. 😁

smilesy · 12/09/2026 15:40

I would agree with pp that “curated” is going a
bit far, but I make sure that tops and bottoms don’t clash. I tend to wear block colours as patterns are harder to match. I wear mainly Sweaty Betty leggings but always bought in the sale. I find them comfortable and they don’t roll down during Pilates. Tops are from anywhere I see one at a reasonable price. I have quite a few Goodmove ones. I pretty much always wear vests as I find T-shirts ride up

hattie43 · 12/09/2026 15:47

I go to a posh gym so started off in a tracksuit but soon learnt I needed sweaty bettys so now I am co-ordinated and really comfortable.

RaraRachael · 12/09/2026 15:53

I have black or navy leggings with black, white or navy tops. Whatever is comfy and vaguely matches.

Same. Used to love Lululemon leggings, now I'm in shorts from Community Clothing and Cotton Traders.

Waitingfordoggo · 12/09/2026 17:15

I’m a fitness instructor and gym gear makes up the bulk of my wardrobe. But no, I don’t give it any thought or attempt to coordinate. I wear mostly black ‘cause I’m a sweaty git.

Britpopbaby · 12/09/2026 18:39

Mine is all charity shop buys that are a bit mid matched but includes Sweaty Betty and Lululemon

EveryDayisFriday · 12/09/2026 18:44

My Gym uniform is black, a colour I don't wear any other time.

Oti Mabuse leggings from Tu
Sports Bra & Racer back loose top from Primark.

Change into a figleaves swimsuit for the sauna.
