Saggy mummy leggings vs polished comfortable trousers

I’m returning to work from mat leave but work from home. I’m looking for a pair of trousers that are comfortable but look polished. I’m desperate to get out of my saggy mummy leggings and claim a bit of my identity back! Linen trousers would work for the warmer months but looking for the winter equivalent!

I have Halara wide leg trousers in dark blue and black and they are great for this scenario. I wear with a smart top and they look work ready but they're soft and stretchy with an elasticated waistband!

I also have the wide leg jeans in dark and light blue.

I haven't had any issues with quality or washing well.

MN put me onto M&S navy jersey wideleg trousers. They are so comfortable, need no ironing, look really smart - waistband and darts so they look nicely tailored but the waistband is actually stretchy. Very forgiving if your weight fluctuates. Very dark navy, almost black, so they go with everything. I live in them in winter.

They also do a straight legged version.

The Brown is a nice colour, I wish it was an option for the straight leg version.
I can only have so much black in my life.

Another vote for the M&S trousers. Best work trousers ever and the short are perfect on my 26” inside leg, so they’ll be about 27”. Oddly I found the charcoal a neater fit than either the black or the navy. As I lose weight I put them on eBay and they’re snapped up, so I think everyone agrees M&S have absolutely perfected the work trouser at such a reasonable price. They also wash beautifully (Christ I sound old)

Minasama · 08/09/2026 18:46

I had some excellent three-quarter wide leg trousers from The White Company in a thick jersey cotton. Hang beautifully and v comfy.
M&S trousers are always a winner as well and less expensive.

Whatweread · 08/09/2026 20:50

I like Cos, Reiss and Jaeger for work trousers. WFH it can be anything with an elasticated waist!

BuffaloCauliflower · 08/09/2026 20:53

I’m also a fan of the Halara waffle trousers. Lots of lengths (and yes petite is cut petite not just shorter legs) pockets and belt loops so look smart. Loads of colours

I have these in the black & brown and live in them for work. Super comfy and smart. I wear with gazelles and mix up, boxy tees/shirts, fitted tee & cardi x congrats on your baby x

@XStitcher87 I wfh and wear the linen trousers from H&M with a tighter fitting top, tucked in. Plus a nice blazer if im on teams calls or a fitted jacket if on the school run. The trousers comes in different colours every season and I have three colourways. I wear leggings underneath in the winter. Im on calls a lot so ive actually used chat gpt to style myself more on calls. It really tells you what isnt flattering!

Previously i wore leggings everywhere and felt like a frump! This was a mini step upwards.

My friend has the M&S ones to go to the office and they tend to sag. They do sell denim look trousers too, a dupe for Halara, and those are great.

sunnyfeet · 09/09/2026 15:36

@Eesha I've also had some good fashion ideas from Chat GPT :)

I have a preloved shop but I needed something for a job interview and had nothing in my size. I bought the chocolate barrel legs from M and s as seen on Rants and big pants. They haven't arrived and the interview has been and gone but they look lovely and will be good transition period trousers. Ive plenty of wool ones, which I Had to wear today, I looked at Halara but they felt too casual to me

Thanks a lot! You've just "made" me buy a pair of those trousers! 😂

BreezyClouds · 09/09/2026 20:38

Boden Balmoral ponte trousers, they're well tailored, heavy drapey fabric and have stretch. Its a spendy option but there's some on vinted.

PleaseDontTreadOnTheDaisies · 10/09/2026 00:35

I have the Next wide legged trousers in the first post - they're so nice & comfy. Daughter always compliments them. Got them in blue & black.

Comtesse · 10/09/2026 10:40

I have the M&S trousers, the wide legs are better, I don’t rate the straight leg ones too much. The wide leg ones can bag a little but they recover well when washed. For the price they are decent.

I’m wearing these trousers right now. So comfortable. No pockets though. https://www.next.co.uk/style/su263730/n78725

I bought these and have them on today, I think I actually prefer them to the other Next trousers I linked up thread. Really comfortable and I like the thick waist band - unfortunately they aren't flattering on my C-section pouch but nothing is and I'm wearing a jumper that covers it anyway.

I got the regular length and they are an inch or two longer than the other regular Next trousers I have.

I really like the look of the Halara ones. Think they will be my next buy.

M&S are having a moment their barrel cargos look great casually or smarter with a white short and flats/kitten heels. Really versatile.

I agree, M&S fashion is way better recently than it has been for decades.

These look great and I love all the colours. Is the jersey quite thick?

Yes, the jersey is quite thick. I wear them in autumn and winter but not in summer.

I loved these but they shrunk up very slightly in the first wash and I just don’t like slightly short wide leg trousers! I only wash on 30/40 degrees so I’m not sure why they did. So just to say I’d recommend buying slightly longer than required.

I like the coord sets from Hush, wash well and basically like day pyjamas

I’ve heard their current buyers are former Topshop buyers from the Arcadia days. I was a former Topshop lover and am loving M&S at the moment so I feel there might be some truth in it!

I went for the M&S Jersey Wide Leg for now. I might look into a pair of Halaras once that post mat leave pay check hits though!

I tried the M&S trousers on today because of this thread and oh my god, they are not c section pouch friendly, even sizing up!
