Inherited an old fur coat from MIL……really not my thing….is it anyone’s?! That’s the question, is there a way to sell these without getting flamed for cruelty to animals?! I never asked for it.

but I could do with a cash injection if it were poss rather than give it away if poss…..

I had this with an inherited fur coat made out of kangaroo. It wasn’t warm and pretty old. I think you could sell yours on eBay. People tend not to be offended by vintage fur coats as much as brand new. I ended up taking mine to the charity shop and the volunteer said what a fantastic fur coat. So I said it’s yours. Good luck

I love fur! Put it on eBay or get an antique barn to sell it for you. It needs to be in good condition though. I took a vintage fur stole to a ball and as I was getting it out the car a month larvae fell out!

Pollyanna87 · 07/09/2026 15:06

I buy fur coats on eBay. Do you know what kind of fur it is?

omghereistrouble · 07/09/2026 15:20

many charity shops wont take them but as said eBay as lots of collectors have them.
Theatres? for costumes.
check if there are any vintage collectors near you but they may not pay a lot

Just sell it on eBay, but you won't get much for it - less than £100 I'd have thought.

WingnutSOS · 07/09/2026 17:12

@Pollyanna87 not sure , any ideas? Seems in decent nick! I’ve seen a mink on eBay that looks similar?

to me thats a classic fur coat. i collect vintage photos and have seen that style on a lot of 1940s snaps. i am not sayin its worth a fortune but i would say you should be able to compare on selling sites for value

LlynTegid · 07/09/2026 18:43

Donate it to a local theatre or costumier. That's what my mother did with my grandmother's one, which had probably not been worn since the 1960s.

Iwilladmit · 07/09/2026 18:46

What size is it OP?

I wore my inherited furs until they fell apart…. But I was amazed to see how cheap they are to replace, just bought a blonde mink for £50.

NetZeroZealot · 07/09/2026 18:54

Good luck. I had a lovely inherited monk coat to sell & it was only valued at about £200. So it’s still at the back of the wardrobe.

amylou8 · 07/09/2026 18:58

You can put it on eBay, but you need to know what type of fur it is. If you just list it as real fur they'll take it down under their endangered animals policy. I sell fur on there quite often as I deal with house clearances. I've not had any issues, I don't think people generally mind vintage fur. Don't put it on vinted, you can't list real fur on there at all.

It looks nice! Looks like a nice quality mink. I think you’ll get £50, maybe closer to £100 if you’re lucky. New mink coats are insanely expensive but the vintage ones can be very affordable.

socksandshoos · 07/09/2026 19:31

Definitely eBay - I was in the same boat, sold 2 £50 a piece because I wanted a quick sale, they went within a week

TheDogsMother · 07/09/2026 19:33

Fur coats are very popular on the vintage scene. They have loads for sale at Goodwood Revival so I would get in on eBay or Vinted quickly as the event is a little under two weeks away.

MmeGallimaufry · 07/09/2026 19:59

I had no idea vintage fur coats were so affordable! So warm. I'm half-tempted.

Same! I wouldn’t buy new fur, but vintage seems morally acceptable and probably better environmentally than a new fake fur, as well as warmer.

HorribleHisTories15 · 09/09/2026 02:20

My DM received a few from my DF when he was in the military back in the 70s -80s and was stationed in Germany. I plan on wearing mine with pride, and so does my big Sister. It’s part of my inheritance and I am not ashamed.

purpleblast · 09/09/2026 02:59

Where does a fur coat lie between a leather jacket and cruella de vill puppy coat?
