Inherited an old fur coat from MIL……really not my thing….is it anyone’s?! That’s the question, is there a way to sell these without getting flamed for cruelty to animals?! I never asked for it.

but I could do with a cash injection if it were poss rather than give it away if poss…..

Same! I wouldn’t buy new fur, but vintage seems morally acceptable and probably better environmentally than a new fake fur, as well as warmer.

It isn't morally acceptable. It's a validation of wearing fur. It's vile and looks vile.

I can't believe I'm reading a discussion about wearing real fur coats in 2026 tbh.

Good luck. I had a lovely inherited monk coat to sell & it was only valued at about £200. So it’s still at the back of the wardrobe.

Is a monk coat a dirty habit?!

EBay. I sold my Great Aunt’s there. I think I got £50 each for a jacket and a stole. I was pleased to be rid of them

I would never buy a new fur but of these garments have already been created (and bearing in mind they no longer are) surely it is better that they are used rather than just going to landfill?

Edited

No it isn't better.

That is your opinion. I would never condone the creation of these garments today as it is totally unethical but it is also totally unethical to throw tonnes and tonnes of clothing into landfill. It is balancing the two things and not a simple black and white problem.

Whenthecriwdsayno · 16/09/2026 07:15

Love it I would buy it. OP put th eBay link down

The trouble is when you wear fur nobody but you will know if it’s new or vintage at a glance (unless very knowledgeable) so you’re essentially advertising your support of the fur industry even if you say you oppose the creation of new fur garments.

brightnails · 16/09/2026 08:12

there’s no way to do that. someone old wore a fur coat to our place of worship and it totally distracted me with lots of negative feelings, couldn’t tell you what the talks were about. they’re not appropriate to wear now.

i do see your point there but for more context, I wear it once a year at a major vintage event while dressed in vintage style clothing. There are many, many other people at the same event dressed in vintage/second furs. Many stalls at the event also sell them so these items are being endlessly recycled. I would never buy or wear new.

Don't know how anyone would have the nerve to. I used to go on all the anti fur marches 45 years ago, seems just so crass now (and then to me)
