Help me build a casual winter capsule wardrobe!

I went through all my clothes and Vinted them in the summer. Now I need a new capsule for the winter. I have jeans so not worried about them, but would like some new tops and bottoms - not too expensive, I'm thinking M&S, Mango, H&M, John Lewis
Anyone fancy helping me/us build a 'casual' capsule wardrobe for the winter

What colour scheme do you fancy

Dark greens and blues. Burgundy would be good too

Have a look at Next ‘the set’ collection. I’ve just bought a couple of cardigans from there - dark olive green and clay red/brown - and some coordinating t-shirts and have had compliments on them.

I asked ChatGPT as I’m useless. It was brilliant and I’ve almost completed my capsule wardrobe on a limited budget.
Now to clear out all the stuff I don’t wear.

If you've now got a vinted budget, use it! I did a huge clear out last winter and sold everything on vinted, using the money to replace them with brands that I don't spend the money on new. I got some lovely jumpers from & Other Stories, COS, Mint velvet, etc

What footwear and outerwear are you thinking? For me they’re key especially in winter when they’re what you see most. Personally I’ve bought an olive green Crombie style coat (sale bargain) and am looking forward to resurrecting my cherry red DM boots.

I agree that’s a brilliant place to start, outerwear and boots/footwear. You will probably get more wear from these than anything else.
What style and length of jeans do you have?

I’ve just got these cord leggings from Next in black. They’re a nice fit and look a bit smarter than “normal” leggings. Got them in black, they also do grey, burgundy and brown. They look good with my low biker boots, my smarter knee high boots and with chunky trainers. Would be easy to pair with a multitude of tops.

I don't know if this will follow in the UK but I was just in Australia (their winter) and pretty much all the winter colours were burgundy, beige and black, or a variation of all three. So I am assuming these will be the main colours around for us this winter so hopefully you might find a nice selection of burgundy coming into the shops over the next few weeks.

That's a really interesting article and also useful for another thread I'm on about in-between season dressing - layers are the way forward!

How on earth is ‘base layer, mid layer, outer layer,’ and then lower half some sort of revelation? (According to that article.) Isn’t it just getting dressed for cooler weather? 🤷‍♀️

I just found the way it was written interesting and like probably a lot of people I have a habit of just chucking on eg a jumper and jeans then being much too hot but having nothing on underneath. Layers aren't rocket science but I thought the way she suggests putting them together and balancing silhouettes was useful.

You’ve reminded me that I bought a couple of pairs of these last year. Couldn’t decide between sizes so I kept both. Fit is more slim fit than skinny which I liked. If these are the same, I may get some burgundy.

My issue here is that these silhouettes easily add 10-15 lbs and they are fashionable at the moment but the styles will not last.

I mean she is stating the very obvious - but its excellent advice and it works.

I agree with the writer & this is how I am approaching winter. I feel the cold more now after weightloss & I have had to buy new clothes that fit.

Ugh - burgandy and beige really are the bottom of the barrell when it comes to clothing colours.

Beige looks gross on pretty much everyone and burgandy is a sad tired dull brown/red like last week leftover casserole. Neither colour is for me - just as well I don't need to buy much this winter.

I would like a really bright pink jumper - I picked up a cheap M&S acrylic one in a charity shop a couple of years ago & was suprised how good the colour looked on me (not one I would usually wear), and how fab it was to style/layer etc. Now I would like a similar jumper but in merino wool.

I feel the opposite and love burgundy and beige! I think they really suit olive skin and blonde hair so I wear them a lot. I am picky about the particular shade of beige though, and even more so about the fabric composition (for warmth as much as look).
