Help me build a casual winter capsule wardrobe!

I went through all my clothes and Vinted them in the summer. Now I need a new capsule for the winter. I have jeans so not worried about them, but would like some new tops and bottoms - not too expensive, I'm thinking M&S, Mango, H&M, John Lewis
Anyone fancy helping me/us build a 'casual' capsule wardrobe for the winter

@weaselyeyes - I don't see either on Vinted right now in any size. But they'll turn up! eBay is easier to save searches on & more efficient, I find.

weaselyeyes · 04/09/2026 18:58

That's awesome, thank you @EleanorMc67 ! Very tempted by that one on ebay. I'm anything from a 6/8/10/12 in jumpers. Do you think yours is true to size or comes up small/large? I could either be xs or s usually. Of course, I could just keep stalking Vinted also

I'd say slightly generous. But I would ask the seller for the length & pit-to-pit measurements if they're not provided. And compare them to a similar fit of jumper of your own, as it'll be your actual chest measurement plus several inches if you want it loose-ish? The cut is a straight-ish loose-ish one anyway.

I did find this, @weaselyeyes

And another photo of it.

Love the green

Hah it does sound as though I've never dressed myself before doesnt it!

I just found the way it was written interesting and like probably a lot of people I have a habit of just chucking on eg a jumper and jeans then being much too hot but having nothing on underneath. Layers aren't rocket science but I thought the way she suggests putting them together and balancing silhouettes was useful.

I genuily had no idea that this can happen to people.

Just to let you know, @EleanorMc67, I did buy it. It arrived today and I do love it! I angsted over it as I don't normally buy 'nice' things for myself, but a cashmere mix at less than half price seemed too good to pass up. I was spurred to act by the fact that someone started watching it whilst I was brooding - probably another MNer captivated by its green charms - and I felt competitive. Luckily it's a great fit! I shall only wear it out of the house as I have evil, thread-pulling cats, but I shall be swanking about all winter in it.

Thank you again for your online style detective work!

That's great! Very pleased for you! Vinted & eBay allow you to buy "nice" things for yourself all the time ...!

I have an evil shredder of a cat too - though it's my once-gorgeous linen sofas that have borne the brunt of her claws!

weaselyeyes · 09/09/2026 12:44

Yes, but my definition of nice for myself is usually £5 on Vinted! £10 if I go crazy 😀

Sorry that you too know the horror of an evil shredder

Now you just need to find the green sequinned mini skirt that it's paired with above! Essential for any capsule winter wardrobe ...

As someone who runs warm, I never wear anything under a jumper. As I'd be too hot straight away!!

TheFarriersDaughter · 10/09/2026 07:31

I too can’t get my head around a jumper being worn as a first or only layer …

That green jumper is similar to one I have - pre-Covid, Studio Nicholson - in a dark moss green, though mine is made with slits all the way up the sides so it hangs differently. Outside record-breaking heatwaves I wear it pretty much all year round, but in winter it’s gorgeous with a dark green, ankle length sequinned skirt from Zara.

Caramac045 · 23/09/2026 05:44

I rarely wear jumpers but when I do I never wear anything underneath it. Well a bra but not a vest or t shirt or anything.
2 layers is 1 layer too many for me.

There was also a long mossy green sequinned skirt in the Autograph range at the time. At the time I thought it would be frivolous to buy it - as these days I don't get to go out much in the evenings!!

But I may just keep an eye out for it on eBay/Vinted ... I shouldn't really, for environmental reasons - but I do love sequins!! I could wear it out for lunch - couldn't I ...??!

*I always wear a fine vest top under jumpers. Especially the more fitted styles as it smooths out bra outlines etc.

This looks like the 2026 iteration. I would feel entirely at home in this outfit, and reluctant to take it off until April:

This one? Yes it's beautiful. I love the fabric of the skirt - yet I normally really dislike that cardboard-y ridged crushed velvet that you see on the high street. This fabric really does look "liquid". And the entire outfit looks very stroke-able!
