I'm 41 and I long for grey hair

I have greys, but sporadic ones.

I keep seeing videos of women aged about 40/50 who have full grey roots and go to the salon to have their hair done grey all over.

Every single one looks magnificent. Gorgeous.

I want it.

Impossible for me of course, would be just as much upkeep as going platinum blonde or light red (am a brunette) but my gosh, how pretty it would be.

i let my blonde highlights grow out when I was 41, excitedly waiting for an all grey mane….15 years later, many grey hairs, but not the all over magnificence that I want!

My grey hair looks shite - I’m in my 50s - I get it coloured every couple of months. Don’t believe the hype. All my friends colour their hair and I’ve known people to grow it out and then go back to dyeing.

I went grey very early and dyed to cover up. Then, about 10 years ago (age 38) I was on chemotherapy so decided to ditch the dye for a bit as I had enough going on, and "go grey gracefully". I had a full head of properly grey hair. I was out with my kids when a couple passed by and cheerfully commented "isn't it lovely to get out with the grandkids" while gesturing at my two. I was horrified and stopped at the supermarket on the way home to buy some dye. The memory still makes me cringe 10 years later. I'm currently very light blond, as this doesn't show the white roots as much as darker dye, and have no intention of exposing my grey any time soon. I would not be wishing yourself grey.

Im 64 and have been growing my greys out for the last 18 months. It's grey at the front and top, but v dark at the back and underneath. Very annoying. However, this isn't nearly as annoying as the mix of textures grey hair brings. It's sort of coarse, sort of fluffy and sort of limp. My hair is curly, except the grey bits won't hold a curl.
The grey haired gorgeousness on the socials doesn't reflect most people's daily reality.

I’m 54 and only patches of mine has gone grey. If I didn’t dye it, I’d look like a piebald pony.

I'm mid-fifties and I'm still waiting for the greys. I get it. My hair is dull and mouse brown.

I’ve been very lucky though I didn’t think that at all when I started to go grey in my early twenties, well not even grey but white!!!
But by the time I was thirty it was completely white. .but I do love it now. It’s so easy with no roots to worry about. I keep it shoulder length & luckily it hasn’t thinned. It isn’t hereditary as my dad had black hair till he died but mine was red… mum’s was red but as she died aged 27 don’t know if I follow her.

You may never get it. My paternal grandfather stayed dark brown with just faint highlights, others have faded reds. I'm the youngest to go grey properly in my family. Would've been Mum but she's dyed her hair since I was a kid. I love mine. It's not all over yet, and may never get there, but I reckon I'm at least 50/50 or 60/40. There are steel coloured highlights that I love, with sections of vivid white. Started at 40 when I stopped colouring my hair. I rememver a trend years back when young women dyed their hair various shades of Grey. I loved that but would have hated the maintenance.

It really depends on the hair itself. I went grey I hated it as a sort of iron grey. My natural hair colour is black. It was pretty horrible I’m allergic to hair dye, took a decade to find one I was not allergic to, it’s now a sort of medium brown. I much prefer it. My friend has beautiful silver grey hair, it’s a truly lovely colour.

That sort of grey blending can cost a fortune, plus the upkeep

I’m 60s and have coloured my hair since the first greys at 18 (originally used the triangular Harmony boxes for those old enough to remember!). I can’t see myself embracing white hair anytime soon

I love mine and I think they look good. But I have had short hair since very many years so my greys look like highlights evenly scattered all over my head. My natural colour is greyish blonde and my greys are white. I probably have around 50/50.

I’m dreading it. I only have a few grey stands at the moment, but they are a completely different texture to the rest of my hair. My hair is soft and silky and grey hairs are horrible thick wiry things.

I spoke to my hairdresser about going grey and he said its not as flattering as you think for the majority of people. His advice was to keep dyeing hair even if using box dye at home for roots.

I remember the trend and I used to dye my hair white in my early twenties. It was very high maintenance to keep the colour even and silver.

I was never a Roxette fan but Marie Frederiksson was a real fashion icon and well known for her short white hair styles.

He would wouldn't he, he's a hairdresser and 'dressing' hairdresser is how he earns money.

I have thick, wavy grey shoulder length hair. I love it. It has lots of different colours in it the way only natural hair has (I dyed my hair for 30 years do know what I'm talking about). It's shiny and in great condition

No one thinks I look like my children's gran and generally people think I'm a few years younger than I am.

Imo it's all about the cut and health of your hair coupled with your overall style and attitude. Look at Sarah Harris the deputy editor of Vogue who looks great with grey hair.

I'd love to be grey too - I'm 56 with just a few grey strands though so a long time to wait. Sarah Harris does look amazing, but she is still fairly young I think! My experience from my contemporaries is that it can make you look older and washed out unless you have a good cut and wear make up and jewellery.

Sarah Harris is in her mid 40s and I think I remember reading went grey in her early 20s.

(46) I have loads of grey in some parts then other parts are still my natural super dark brown.

I leave the stylist to do whatever she wants and it would appear I'm going very blond at the moment 😂.

She originally said she was going to add highlights and lowlights but I haven't seen lowlights for quite a while now.

Hopefully once the natural dark bits are gone I'll be able to leave it to nature.

Sarah Harris is a very beautiful woman with fabulous bone structure. Her hair may not be quite as incredible with jowls and a fat face (ie me).
Op - some people go grey and it looks great, in others it looks shit. Don't wish your own hair away, if you are the latter, you'll be gutted. My own hair is still mostly dark in my 50s, maybe 10% grey. I'm hoping for a Mallen streak given where most of the grey is, but DD assures me my eyesight is just too crap to see the sprinkling everywhere else.

Been grey since 38 could have let it go before then, runs in family grandfather all grey by 25 my mum by 30 my 2 brothers one is 27 and one is 32 all grey fully aswell..I did dye but got fed up with how regularly needed to do it

I am older than you and definitely have some grey in my hair. I have dyed it in the past but now it is entirely natural: dark brown with strands of grey. I love it!

I have had greys since I had my first child at 21 , at 52 it’s white now and mostly all around my crown.
I used to dye it light ash blonde .. until a man asked my daughter if the elderly woman walking the dogs was her gran 🙈
straight back dying it darker , but there’s no point really , the white peeks back within a week or two!
I wish I was brave enough to go fully platinum or silver
