I'm 41 and I long for grey hair

I have greys, but sporadic ones.

I keep seeing videos of women aged about 40/50 who have full grey roots and go to the salon to have their hair done grey all over.

Every single one looks magnificent. Gorgeous.

I want it.

Impossible for me of course, would be just as much upkeep as going platinum blonde or light red (am a brunette) but my gosh, how pretty it would be.

The transition period is awful isn't it?

If I could snap my fingers and have a full head of silvery grey hair I'd do it, And have the odd pearly/platinum blonde balayage to brighten it up.

But I've still got so much dark hair (50s), so highlights and grey blending it is. No way would I do a box dye or all over colour - the grey is all concentrated around my hairline and part so the regrowth would look awful.

He would wouldn't he, he's a hairdresser and 'dressing' hairdresser is how he earns money.

I have thick, wavy grey shoulder length hair. I love it. It has lots of different colours in it the way only natural hair has (I dyed my hair for 30 years do know what I'm talking about). It's shiny and in great condition

No one thinks I look like my children's gran and generally people think I'm a few years younger than I am.

Imo it's all about the cut and health of your hair coupled with your overall style and attitude. Look at Sarah Harris the deputy editor of Vogue who looks great with grey hair.

I'm sure your hair looks lovely! I don't think my hairdresser was just saying that to me, as either way I'd need some colour treatment.

It really depends on the hair itself. I went grey I hated it as a sort of iron grey. My natural hair colour is black. It was pretty horrible I’m allergic to hair dye, took a decade to find one I was not allergic to, it’s now a sort of medium brown. I much prefer it. My friend has beautiful silver grey hair, it’s a truly lovely colour.

That sort of grey blending can cost a fortune, plus the upkeep

What dye are you using ?
I’m allergic to PPD and use those shampoo in temp colours but they leave green / red undertones.

Completely grey can be beautiful.
The transition period is gorgeous on women with naturally black hair and olive skin , that’s a beautiful combo .
Ive tried to let my dark brown hair go natural a couple of times but it’s just a mousy yellowish mess , it’s very annoying .

I am 54 and completely white. It is quite a nice colour but I hate it. I look older anyway and it really doesn't help. I started going grey aged about 30 and dyed it for years but got to the point that short of dying it every couple of days, I had awful white roots. It is thin as well. Am considering a wig!

I’m 60s and have coloured my hair since the first greys at 18 (originally used the triangular Harmony boxes for those old enough to remember!). I can’t see myself embracing white hair anytime soon

This ! Mine is pure white thin limp and shows my scalp if I don't colour it . Be careful what you wish for!

I think you're probably right about overall health and style of hair - mine was in a bit of a state at the time my kids were referred to as grandchildren due to chemo etc, but it still stung enough that I'm in no hurry to go natural again any time soon.

I had no idea who Sarah Harris is so just had a google. My hair is just like hers but not quite as long, it’s naturally curly but I’ve been wearing it straight for the past three years or so. I do get compliments on the colour and unlike a PP I have the exact opposite experience at the hairdresser in that I’m told NEVER to dye it.

Mairzydotes · 29/08/2026 18:28

I'm in my early 40s too, and I'd love grey hair too.

I have a few strands which look awful when my roots come in against my dark hair , but now I've grown the dye out , I only have a smattering.

We always want what we don't have , don't we.
