Should i get married in jeans or make an effort?

Hi,

Im getting married in early October. Really simple wedding: me, my partner and my parents.

Im really struggling to figure out what to wear. I fully intended on just going in jeans but my partner is keen to dress smarter, so I feel like I should too.

I do NOT want to wear white/ivory and I don't do floral prints. Apart from that im pretty open to anything, im 35, size 6-8 and 5ft 4. It doesn't have to be a dress either, open to trousers etc. Budget £100, but will also be scouring vinted for bargains 😅

Anybody got any ideas?

You can wear what you want but I think you will be pleased you made the effort to dress up. It’s a special day. X

I’d wear my favourite dress!
If I were to buy something probably a deep red or rich green jewel coloured dress or trouser suit.
What do you love to wear? What’s your style?

JustWhatIAlwaysWanted · 20/08/2026 16:53

If your fiance wants to be more dressed up, then I would dress up to match that, but in a way that suited me. Doesn't have to be white or cream. I know loads of people who've married in colours. A trouser suit, jump suit, or dress in a style you like would be fine. Get him a tie that matches or tones in.

No advice from me sorry but have a lovely wedding op, congratulations 🥂

I would wear whatever I liked that made me feel fabulous. It’s still a special day, and I think you’ll get caught up in the moment and be glad you made the effort. Have a fab time whatever you choose.

White jeans, a white top, amazing shoes and flowers. Job done.

Do you have a favourite colour? Find a new dress/top/jacket in a colour that makes you feel good and you’ll look radiant.

What about a gorgeous jump suit.

I got married a couple of years ago. Older bride. Registry Office.
I wore a silver sequinned Phase Eight dress. I still smile when I see it or look at the photos.
Get yourself something that makes you feel special. Anything that you want as long as it makes you feel good.

I got married same time of year to you. I remember speaking to the registrar a couple of months before and before I'd decided what to wear. She said some people turn up in shorts and flip flops or jeans and are all blasé about it thinking it's just a registry office, then they realise that actually it's quite a big deal, they're getting married and suddenly feel under dressed.

We are in no way traditional and husband thought he'd wear shirt, trousers and trainers. As we got closer he actually bought a suit and smart shoes (never worn a suit before) and I bought a longish navy dress and heels (which I never wear). It was actually really nice to dress up as we are usually always in jeans. I liked the thought of darker, autumnal colours and not white/ cream. The dress I've worn several times since. One thing I would say is that the day before I decided I'd like a bouquet and picked out some white/cream with greenery and holding it made me feel like I was getting married and the photos looked like we got married.

I would wear whatever makes you feel you and special for your day. Whether you feel more comfortable in a dress or nice trousers/ jacket.

We got married in June, he’s in his 60s, me hanging on to my 50s, just 😂

I made an effort and I was so pleased I did. The registrars made such a fuss of us, there were only the 4 of us too, us and my son and his girlfriend as witnesses

we hired the smallest room, put together a playlist for entrance, and after - I was not going to bother, but the ladies said that it seems a bit too like admin. So I had fun with Spotify

the registrars made the service intimate, and touching.

make an effort. I think you will be glad you did.

you don’t have to get flowers, or whatever

I just got a dress, shoes etc off Vinted, had my hair and makeup done. We then got married, and went out for a nice dinner with my son and his girlfriend

we had the best day in the end. Far more than I ever expected it would be.

How lovely OP 😊
Me and DP are getting married (at some point in the distant future) and I've already decided I'm going to wear a Scarlett and Jo dress. I didn't think I wanted a "bridal" dress until we got engaged but now I do want something lovely to wear, it's a special day.

I had a civil partnership - took place at the end of October. I wore a shirt dress and boots. My partner wore jeans, polo neck and blazer. We just had two unrelated witnesses but if family had been there I would have worn the same.
wear what feels right and comfortable for you.

Jeans? Why no go in your pyjamas or sweat pants.

Dress up for heaven's sake!

I think to be considerate of the tone of your special day. What is the core purpose and message you both want to share with everyone? And then, the set up of the wedding, the colors, background, outside near the ocean, etc., you and your fiances hair colors. I think that a 1 piece jumpsuit with flair or ruffles would be smart and dressy, fitted really well. Should be able to find that at Dillards. Possibly with same colored sequins? A pretty arid long scarf can make a beautiful statement. Or, a short one pinned to hair in place of a veil. He'd look great with a long button up shirt and a leather vest. And for a bouquet you could make one with one bunch of store bought flowers and trim the ends and wrap them with long ribbons and let them stream long, even splitting into 2 or 3 strands, if able to. Tie the very ends so but they don't ravel, depending on the material. The Vinted app could be a great idea!! 👍
