Is H&M now stopping customers ordering two sizes to compare?

Has anyone tried to order more than 1 size from H&M recently? I want a pair of trousers, but the measurements make me either 12 or 14. I tried to add both to the bag, but after giving me a message about the environmental cost of returns, it keeps chucking out the other pair! Wtf?

Women’s retailers really need to be asking themselves why there’s such a problem with returns then don’t they.

I really don't understand why you (general you) have such problems. About 80% of what I buy is online. I think I've returned 3 dresses in 6 years and even then it was because I wasn't being honest with myself about the size I needed . I never buy 2 sizes.

Edit, to add I've never bought anything from H&M, ASOS or Next.

I’ve been buying from H&M for 2 decades at least. Sizing used to be reliable and fabric quality was very good (I still have and fit items that old from them).
But over the last 5 years their sizing is all over the place. Even for the same, say, dress, the sizing is different if you choose different colours. How? It’s the same fabric, the same model, same cut, why is it different?
Unfortunately, they have created this issue.
Like you, I used to never need to return anything ordered from H&M, now I’d need to order 2 sizes just in case. I’d usually keep one size, unless the fabric or cut quality was disappointing. I am a genuine H&M long term loyal customer. But I can’t be doing with all this faffing around.
The stores in the two towns nearest to me have closed a long time ago. I used to visit very frequently and bought loads in the store.
H&M are not consistent in their garments sizing and are blaming and charging their customers for their failure. They can keep their clothes as far as I’m concerned!

Why do women have so much trouble knowing which size to order when men don’t?
Even leg lengths - i ordered a regular length recently from Next after checking the size guide which said regular was 29” inside leg (which is what I measure as). The trousers were easily 3” too long.
My DH is the same size everywhere- always the same waist and leg measurement. Sometimes a M or L in tops but once he figures out which from a particular store it’s consistent

I think Next say rather vaguely that regular length "fits a 29 inch leg" or something. Not helpful, give the inside leg measurement and let me decide if it will fit me or not!

I can well believe online returns are a huge cost and hassle for clothes and shoe retailers. But what's really frustrating is that they set up online shopping as a way to cut down their overheads in the first place. No more rental fees on shops! Lower wage bills! No need for cleaners, interior designers, shop staff and all those other positions that were so useful for women who needed part time work, or teenagers wanting Saturday jobs.

Also, couldn't they have foreseen that people would have trouble guessing the right fit?

If all this means a gradual swing back towards physical stores, and more jobs being created as a result, it might just be a good thing.

they dont use pattern cutters either, so they have reduced their outgoing to the point of degrading cut, tailoring and quality. If they don't like people returning items, they should reconsider what game theyre in. You can't win the race to the bottom and expect everyone to follow you there. They can literally sink for all i care, their products are trash.

This too.
The kids clothes and basics were always good. I have silk/cotton vest tops that are several years old and still perfect. I bought their equivalent this year and they are tight and flimsy. The few things I've ordered this year have been returned due to the quality & fabric.
H&M are one of the few shops left in my nearest town 12 miles away. However they're not performing adequately. Whenever I go in to try items I've ordered online, the changing rooms are often closed or the shutters are down because of some incident.
