Should I dye my still-brown dry hair grey at 58?

Does anyone, have advise for hair that has stayed brown.I am now 58.
It still seems to stay brown, but it's very dry. anyone dye their hair grey?
Should I go to a hairdresser and get some advise. Would it look wierd to dye your hair grey?

Should I just wait and see if it still eventually goes turns grey naturally, and just get oil for it?

Well it depends on if you want grey hair or not - dying it won’t improve the texture. I would try using better hair products, à really good shampoo, conditioner, smoothing crème, serum etc.

This is a strange question, why do you think dye would lessen the dryness of your hair?

I have dark brown hair but lots of grey.
When I dyed it brown it was a constant job and ends up looking witchy and messy. I was tempted to just go grey but would just have the opposite problem.

My friend is a hairdresser and it's a big job dying it grey and would be harsh on your hair. I dye it drown with highlights so I don't have to do it as much. I would stay brown if I were you and keep your hair healthy as oossible

If you primarily want to address the condition of your hair, describe the issue to ChatGPT and it will readily suggest the most appropriate products to try.

But obviously if you want a new look as well as better condition, find a really good hairdresser.

And yes - you’d be mad to dye your hair grey at this stage. You’re really lucky to still have your hair colour. Look after it!

I wouldn't start dying it unless it's started to go grey and that bothers you, nothing wrong with brown hair at 58. Regular haircuts, good conditioner and minimal heat would help with the dryness, think dying it would dry it out further.

You're very lucky, I'm 36 and my hair is getting more greys each year.

Dying your hair if it's dry is one of the worst things you could do.

Get a good trim and use some moisturising, gentle hair products and eat well instead.

Why would you want to do this? Use a good conditioner and have some highlights put in if you feel that a full head of dark hair looks less natural at your age (even though it is).

Mine is naturally dark brown with lots of grey coming through, I am 60.

I get it coloured at the salon as I hate the grey on me, it really ages me. It looks great on some people but not for me.

So many women look absolutely fantastic with that colour. You'll need to be able to make it shiny though.

Thing is - some people are never going to go grey! Or at least, not completely.

(My relatives tend to die in their nineties with, at most, pepper and salt hair. And mine seems stubbornly stuck at that stage. I’m cautiously toning it so the grey blends in a bit - wiry silver is just rubbish with my wardrobe.)

but dyeing it grey will make it drier, it’s the dye not the colour.

How would you do it? You can’t dye your hair a lighter colour without bleaching it.

My mum had mid brown hair and never went grey - even at her death at 78 - a few light grey strands was all.
A few years before her death, I asked her what hair dye she used, and she said "I don't!" - I couldn't believe she was naturally so dark in her 70s - I'd assumed she'd dyed it for years.
I don't really understand why you'd want to dye it grey? I would just get some moisturising treatments for it if it's very dry - hair masks and leave-in conditioners etc.

You’d have to bleach it then use a toner to go ‘grey’. Bleach is very drying. And then you’d get dark roots which would look odd.

Well I noticed the threads about people not dying their hair brown, because it makes them look wrinkly.So I thought maybe I should go grey as it might suit my skin colour better.
I think I look paler and paler.
It sounds like it must be hard to dye your hair grey, I would be better off going lighter, and or being nicer to my hair trying to get it moisturised?

No, the hair colour growing out of your head at any given moment is pretty certain to suit your skin tone. That thread was about someone choosing a dye colour that wasn’t their natural colour.

Some people are looking for any excuse to fiddle with their hair - I’d admit I’ve done it when I’m bored

You don’t need all the hassle of bleach and everything. Just get some nice treatment for your hair to make it less dry.

No I would invest in some professional deep conditioners
Philip Kingsley L’Oréal Professional Redken all make them .
Try a little hair oil after styling
Minimise heat tools
Menopause changes your hair texture and can make it dry .
Regular trims
But no don’t dye it grey you are so lucky I started with greys at 24 - over 60 now and still dyed/ highlights /lowlights
and they definitely make your hair dry .

I’m relieved no one else is pressurising you into going grey, @Tigercrane.

You need to use hair masks regularly and go easy on the styling tools, but most importantly don't use box dye on your hair. Go to the hairdresser and ask for their advise on what the best course of action is to either go grey with lots of upkeep, or to go a lighter brown with a few highlights of different colours, eg dark blonde, caramel and light brown to break up the colour you already have.

Well, I’ve actually switched so I now buy the peroxide and colour separately. basically do my own and it’s absolutely fine.
