My surprise 40th birthday party (that I dont know about)

My husband slipped up and has planned a surprise 40th for me in a couple of weeks. He has asked me to 'pretend' I dont know about it on the date and act surprised, no idea how its going to go, as a side note I did not want a party at all and I certainly wish I didnt know about it now. Anyway I am now at a loss on what to wear, i spend most of my time in gym clothes and i am not someone who is dressy or glam. So sorry your DH has done this, I would tell him once again I do not want a party. I would then go out by myself for the day so there’s non way I’m at the surprise party. You are allowed to not want a party.

(For my own 40th party at The Ritz I wore a pinstriped Georges Rech suit - jacket and beautifully tailored shorts. But that was the middle of winter about a century ago. If I were 5’7 and size 10 the outfit I’ve suggested is exactly what I would choose for a ‘surprise’ party. Not actual padded cycling shorts, obvs. The kind I’m wearing to yoga right now. Plus whatever mildly celebratory footwear the OP just happens to have in her sports bag.)

it seems the only ones who don’t know it’s a surprise are the guests.

Get your hisband to send out a dress code memo, and make sure it is pitched right for you - jeans and a nice top , or whatever. Then you will all be on the same plane. If it’s at a restaurant, he will presumably have told you beforehand so you can dress appropriately - the surprise bit will be that you won’t know it’s more than the two of you - so no one will expect you to be in gym clothes

Its a really weird situation.

If you dont want a party just dont have one.

I suspect DH intentially slipped up to be honest, i wasnt happy as I specifically said a party was not what I wanted. I had a party for my 30th and my circle of friends is much smaller now I am hitting 40. He did offer to cancel it but then I felt guilty and abit of a killjoy so here we are.

I dont know who I am pretending for, the guest I supose who all sound invested in it now. I really wish I didnt know about it.

I should clarify I wouldnt wear gym clothes for a meal out but I would be casual. This top still has its tags on and has been sat in wardrobe for about 6 weeks. I was wondering if wide legged jeans might be an option that could work?

I got this recently for a casual wedding reception in a scruffy pub. I felt awesome in it and got heaps of compliments. Im 5'9" and got the tall version and it could have been longer tbh. Id still get the tall at 5'7'. It fit so well Im getting the black too. You might need to size down - Im a 10/12 and the 10 fit but I wish id got an 8 now. I'm sorry but if I didn't want a party I'd be really angry over this.
A party you don't want and having to worry about wearing the "correct" outfit.

When DH was approaching his 60th birthday, he announced that any surprise party would rapidly be followed by a surprise divorce! I didn't organise a thing and we were both much happier for it.

Crisp, ironed with point wide legged white jeans and healed strappy shoes or sandals in neutral, black, metalic or bright colour. Sunglasses, hair and make up smart.

Please ignore the advice to be angry about the party, again. You’ve already expressed your displeasure but have moved on.
