My surprise 40th birthday party (that I dont know about)

My husband slipped up and has planned a surprise 40th for me in a couple of weeks. He has asked me to 'pretend' I dont know about it on the date and act surprised, no idea how its going to go, as a side note I did not want a party at all and I certainly wish I didnt know about it now. Anyway I am now at a loss on what to wear, i spend most of my time in gym clothes and i am not someone who is dressy or glam. How does it affect you in any way whether the person the party is theown for knows in advance or not? Ridiculous comment as people who have a surprise party generally do turn up dressed appropriately, having been told they are going for a drink or meal etc

Is this about how he wants other people to view him? He wants people telling you how lucky you are that he did this?

I suggest that your DH says to guests that the cat is out of the bag and have a party anyway so you can enjoy it from the beginning. That top is absolutely fine, dress it up or down with a skirt or trousers, a bit of jewellery and enjoy spending time with people who love you.

The wide leg jeans sound perfect.

you usually tell the person that it’s a dinner etc and to dress up, if it’s something fancy that is. Then you get to a venue and surprise…why would anyone be annoyed to see the person dressed up…weird

Oh, I'm very familiar with that lovely place. But judging by regular MN posts, it would appear that many DHs need a neon sign.

What’s the cover story, before he messed up and told you - meal at a restaurant, drinks at the pub? Wear appropriate for that. The top you posted and linen trousers maybe. It’s a nice touch from him, he probably thought you were doing the “I don’t want a party” thing when secretly you wanted a fuss made. As a hint I simply organise my own birthday celebrations so I get exactly what I want though for my 40th my ex did arrange a lovely day out activities (surprises were one of his better qualities and not my now dh’s forte)

@Surprisingmyself If he organised a surprise party for me, he would be the most surprised person there! That said, he's pretty good at choosing gifts.

That would still look better than those cream straight leg jeans a PP suggested.
