What can I wear with this skirt please?

I am looking some advice please. I have this Ted Baker skirt hanging in my wardrobe for years . It has an elasticated waist. I’d like to wear it but I can never decide what to wear on my top half or my feet. I’m a youthful 50,year old 😂5”3 and carrying extra weight everywhere especially on my tummy. Should I wear this at all? I hope to wear it to daytime occasions where I need to be well dressed but not formally dressed iykwim. I was thinking of dressing it down a bit with a black shirt or lightweight jumper (which cover my arms and tummy) and flats but can never see anything suitable. Thank you

What can I wear with this skirt please?

Love these skirts but also massively struggle with them. I’m 5’7 but with short legs and they just seem to make me look boxy and cankle-y

BuddhaAtSea · 15/07/2026 22:00

Try it with a COS boxy T-shirt. I know you think you want it over your tummy, but if it’s sort of floating at the waist it might work. The COS T-shirts come with longer sleeves too.

Lifestooshort71 · 15/07/2026 22:10

It's a bit too girly for me so I'd prob pair it with soft suede boots (gingery colour to bring out that shade in the skirt?) and a boxy short-sleeved top in the same ginger or a strong mauve.

Fiendishandfiery · 15/07/2026 22:12

I’d wear a fitted top with that, likely in tan, fitted doesn’t mean tight.just skimming, to balance out the width of the skirt.

Owlcat42 · 15/07/2026 22:16

I was thinking a simple black t shirt or sweater depending on the weather, black shoes of whatever style you like, plus some sort of statement necklace to pick up the colours in the skirt.

OneNewEagle · 15/07/2026 22:18

I have a tummy I like to cover as well so with skirts I usually wear a loose v neck T-shirt. M&S have some for about a fiver which are pretty good. So I’d wear black t shirt and black Mary janes. It’s a very pretty skirt.

dancingdeidre · 15/07/2026 22:19

A longish shirt in a soft light fabric of a similar colour would look good. Preferably with a collar that will make a V to give you more shape. And a bit of a heel, again in the same colour. Maybe some sparkly earrings and a bracelet.

OneNewEagle · 15/07/2026 22:19

Oh and I love the yellow so yellow top and necklace otherwise.c

WonderingWanda · 15/07/2026 22:20

Black t shirt and flip flops or trainers to dress it down. In winter a black jumper and boots.

AImportantMermaid · 15/07/2026 22:22

A pleated skirt is a hard look to pull off unless you’re a 6 foot beanpole. I’m your height and likely shape and I love the look but I can’t get it to look good. There’s always too much fabric where there needs to be less. As much as it pains me to say to I’d cut my losses and put it on Vinted.

This would look amazing but on someone willowy. I’d stack chunky jewellery though.

sadly I’m not very willowy 😂

Straightjacketsandroses · 15/07/2026 22:24

I’m five foot five and I cannot pull these off: I’ve also had one, unworn, sitting in my wardrobe for years. I’m slim (not curvy) and it somehow still makes me look heavy and frumpy. I say cut your losses - I need to finally get rid of mine!!

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 15/07/2026 22:24

I’m 5ft 1 and love a pleated skirt. They aren’t “flattering” but damn they are pretty so I wear them with a fitted vest or tshirt and nice trainers.

momager22 · 15/07/2026 22:37

White boxy T-shirt and flat sandals or pumps in white or neutral colour.
or a linen white shirt tucked in. I wouldn’t wear that with black at all

Justusethebloodyphone · 15/07/2026 22:37

I have a beautiful one of these too but as a shortie I find it much easier in the winter with a fitted top and boots with a heel, then I get the right amount of swish.

Willowy would look great of course, but speaking as a non-willowy person myself- more of a shrub. - I look longer and leaner wearing all the same colour and with a V neck which shows some skin and makes my neck longer. Please try it, you might be surprised.

These skirts look good on literally nobody abd they're also dated imo. Get rid!!

Jerrybalanitis · 16/07/2026 00:34

Bright pink cashmere sweater and matching heels or smart matching loafers

Gowlett · 16/07/2026 00:45

I like or these skirts. On the hanger…
Too much bum here to wear one!

VideoVox · 16/07/2026 08:44

Another vote for cutting your losses. I love these kind of skirts, but look terrible in them, even when I was young and slim, as I have large hips. Any hint of hips and / or stomach and they don’t look particularly good.

bananaboats · 16/07/2026 15:45

Unfortunately im also voting for cut your losses and get rid, im 5ft2 carrying extra weight & that kind of thing just doesn't suit me at all. Also its quite dated now

Straightjacketsandroses · 17/07/2026 07:18

it seems to be unanimous then - does anyone look good in these skirts?! Mine also is very tight around my waist so makes me look like sausage meat!

Freinddilemma · 17/07/2026 07:31

Im 5'10" and a size 8 and they make me look matronly. They add weight at the waist even when theres none there, and then they just hang down in a straight line
