Ahh having googled it, this is the answer to my quesrion "why have so many young people got such awful haircuts". I suspect it is a cut that take a LOT of skill to do well.

I guess it's the female version of the 'calm down, calm down' mullet that seems to be making a come back up north.

As a rule, any haircut that involves a variation of a mullet looks terrible. If you ever find yourself tempted, hide your hairdresser’s number until the strange urge subsides.

Yeah i agree, life's too short. And it would be easy enough to recover this. If it turns out to be a disaster just wear a headband for 3 months and then get the longest parts cut to the shoulders and it wont look like a fairy mullet anymore

I think anything with 'mullet' in it has to be a no (unless it's pan-seared with a slice of lemon).

Several of dd's friends have hair like that but they are all about ~21 and would look good no matter what they do to their hair.

So having had to google I’ve now discovered there is a type of fish called the Fairy mullet. But anyway… the hair. I don’t know what actually makes it a fairy mullet and not just a mullet. The pictures I saw look ok when the back is wavy and not too long. Does not look so nice when the back is straighter and longer. None of the images I saw were on anyone much older than 22 / 23 and I think being younger probably helps. I don’t think it would be easy to grow out unless your hair grows fast or you’re happy to lob all the back off.

Go for it! You could ask chat gpt to give you a fairy mullet beforehand to see what it would look like.

This is my motto. That being said.... I've had some questionable haircuts over the years 😂. If you like it....go for it. You can always chop it all off if you hate it! Life's too short.

Oh sweet Jesus, this is what my hair tries to do whenever I have a fringe. One aspect of my life got so much easier when I gave that up and grew the fecker out.

I’m also getting flashbacks to a bad cut I had at the Vidal Sassoon training salon in early 1996. I didn’t understand the heavy French accent of the trainee hairdresser and had no idea what she was proposing. I started crying in the salon, causing huge consternation amongst the assorted hairdressers. The manager tried to wield some mousse and a hairdryer, but it was a hopeless case and I went straight to the nearest Monsoon for a hat. Thankfully it grew out a bit before my graduation pictures that summer.

People like to say it's trying too hard or trying to be edgy or alternative. But what if you are edgy and alternative? And you like the look? What are you supposed to do? Get a sleek bob and wear a two-piece from Whistles in case somebody on here doesn't like the style you actually like?

What's actually trying too hard is the people on here who start threads saying they're going to a festival and have no idea what to wear as they usually wear Seasalt and Boden and will funky wellies and cut off denim work. Now that's trying to be something you're not just the other way round to what's happening on this thread. My life isn't a cosplay opportunity.

If you like it and want to try it, just do it. The people who don't like it won't ever like it but they don't have to live with it.

Life is too short to be brow beaten into something because other people have different preferences. I am a secondary teacher and half the children with the right clothes and right haircut and right shoes are uncomfortable and riddled with anxiety and have never known the sheer joy of shopping for clothing with a simple guide of "do I like it?" rather than the complex and shaming framework of "what will other people think?"
