Swimsuit for chubby apple shape

PrincessOfPreschool · 05/07/2026 22:04

Dreading summer hols. Had lots on and no time to focus on losing weight or exercising. I'm a 14-16 apple shape. I look really awful in those supposedly 'shaping' swimsuits with the ruching. Does anyone have a flattering swimsuit recommendation?

You will stand out in Italy in a one piece, get a bikini. Every Italian woman wears a bikini from child to women in their 90s, literally all sizes. No one looks and no one cares. I am a nearly 60 year old woman who is a size 18 and I wear a bikini. I tried one piece one and all my Italian female friends were horrified! I was on the beach today and not a single woman was in a one piece apart from an American tourist!

irisetta · 13/07/2026 07:47

Agree with PP - EVERY woman and girl in Italy wears a bikini. You will stand out in a one piece or tankini! Of course if you don't give a hoot then go for it, but you might actually feel much more comfortable in a bikini...!

Holidaymodeon · 13/07/2026 09:06

I’m curvy and I agree with others that a well shaped bikini is far more flattering, fifties styles in particular but just in one colour, bright or dark, or more modern bikinis with high waist and supportive bust, there’s loads, I even have sexy ones with criss cross up the sides of the big bikini pants and get loads of compliments when I wear them . Also dark leopard print is contemporary without it being busy generic florals . Thick halter straps also good

Another vote for pour moi. They do matching sarong and floaty cover ups. Which you may like.

I have the same issue and swim a lot. Loving this style, it’s actually a one piece so no worries in the water about anything riding up. No bikini line either! www.decathlon.co.uk/p/womens-aquafitness-swimming-shorty-tankini-1-piece-swimsuit-heva-terracotta/348122/c324m8982921

I've started ordering random two-piece items off the back of this, and similar threads (actually I think it was prompted by a Peter and Jane post on FB about wearing a bikini in your 50's and sod 'em!). I used to be a pear (and still have the pear plumpness in bum and thighs) but now have apple fatness between my 38D boobs and my hips. Sad And it's the stuff between boobs and hips that gives me pause. It's WHITE! It's flabby and untoned. Time was when my boobs overhung whatever was down below, it balanced it out.

So it's going to take a lot of courage to do this. I always go to Portugal and similarly to Italy, hardly any women are in one-pieces on the beach. I count them, sometimes Grin I wouldn't say we get stared at though. But all the Portuguese vovós and middle-aged women have tanned middles, regardless of what colour they are, and they look infinitely better than the slug-belly I'm contemplating bearing.

So far, from Vinted I have a couple of pairs of alleged 'tummy control' bottoms (they fit but they're not pulling me in, they also look like large and colourful nappies because they're huge). From Sainsbury I have a tankini top (black) that's actually not bad. (The actual bikini tops I tried looked every bit as bad as I'd expected.) I've just ordered from Amazon some smaller bottoms with drawstring sides to see if I prefer wearing something smaller with the tankini, and I also ordered yet another black bikini top, which will probably get returned.

I think I just have to stop. I've already got a couple of gorgeous Esther Williams swimsuits which are halterneck one pieces with a decent degree of tummy control, and boy legs. And they look good - well, as good as I'm going to look in underwear. I just wanted to try something different and easier to dry, go to the loo in, etc.

I look pear shaped from the front, but from the side, I look heavily pregnant.

I wear swim dresses with support. It helps makes things smoother and still looks feminine.

I just bought a couple of new ones from Amazon as I struggle to find pretty ones from
other websites.

Do you find it floats up when swimming?

I’m in Italy on holiday right now and agree with that. I’m the only one wearing a one piece, and on top of that it’s more like a very short mini dress.

But personally, I don’t care that I’m the only one. It makes me feel confident enough to go to the beach as otherwise, I wouldn’t be going to the beach at all. I’m a size 14/16 so it’s very much a confidence thing but being the only one bothers me less wearing a bikini I feel fat and ugly in.

It does. But one of the ones I bought recently from Amazon has a shorts bottom included which is handy!

I try to avoid recommending this brand - because I don’t want the rest of the world buying up all the stock. No ruching, but an amazing fabric that holds everything in. One size fits 8-16. Tops and bottoms sold separately so you can mix and match. The link is just one example; look at everything and scroll through all the photos, as they use a variety of models with a wide range of proportions:

I wear the Decathlon all in one tankinis, it's shorts and top but sewn together inside so no riding up like you often get with tankinis tops. I need the shorts though because I am a particularly hairy apple.

I’m 100% your shape and 51 so yep, hears ya!

definitely https://www.pourmoi.co.uk/swimwear and in particular the high waisted bottoms and proper support bra tops from Triumph have suited me well.

whack on a bit of fake tan to your tummy if it’s not seen the light of day for a while, maybe a Dove type gentle one if you don’t want to look patchy and different all over….. or treat yourself to an all over professional spray tan for day one - get your confidence up, realise no one actually cares and enjoy your holiday!

Sorry, looks like they no longer do Triumph, however John Lewis do AND there’s a sale on!

i partic like summer wild bikini top and the Pailna……

NorWouldTilly · 18/07/2026 10:16

@PrincessOfPreschool - sometimes, just sometimes, there’s a reason why some clothes are more expensive than others. Lots of brands provide structure - but I really want swimwear that looks kind of now.

Anyhow - get yourself on the mailing list and you can swoop in on the next sale!

Didn’t the OP say at the top that she doesn’t want ruching?

FriendlyGreenAlien · 18/07/2026 14:12

I’m bigger than you and an apple shape. I have four matching pieces from Joe Browns. A bikini top and a tankini top, a briefs bottom and a briefs-with-ruched-skirt. I love it.

Yes, I'm doing this! I found my Freya bikini from last year still fits and looks better than a swimsuit despite my pasty, pudgy tum! I'm going to get another bikini.

I'm not sure if it's my shape as I have very narrow hips and no bum at all, but any ruching just emphasises my 6 month pregnant belly and looks like maternity clothes on me 😭.
