Swimsuit for chubby apple shape

Dreading summer hols. Had lots on and no time to focus on losing weight or exercising. I'm a 14-16 apple shape. I look really awful in those supposedly 'shaping' swimsuits with the ruching. Does anyone have a flattering swimsuit recommendation?

Following because I am also a size 14-16 apple and most swimsuits give pregnancy vibes! So much so that I was questioned whether I should be in a sauna in my condition. (Not pregnant)

Oh @IbwahI so relate. I'm not sure I'm confident enough for these really low ones... But I guess it distracts from the tum

I always go for a tankini top and plain dark bikini bottoms

Zigzagga · 06/07/2026 21:24

I sent some photos into chat gpt and asked what style bikinis would suit me. I ordered them and love them, never loved a bikini before! I'd give it a go

justasking111 · 06/07/2026 21:32

On another thread someone was complaining that no matter what method they used to depilate their bikini area they got flare ups and infections. Posters agreed that bikini bottom shorts were the way forward. I bought two sets of tankini tops and shorts. Problem solved for me too.

Quackingbirds · 07/07/2026 05:41

I recently bought a pour moi one and its very stylish. I carry my weight on my stomach

I have this wrap over swimsuit from Summersalt ( they’re an American brand). They don’t have the colourway I bought but I really liked the way it sat over my waist. The back wasn’t cut too skimpily either.

This hibiscus colour way is actually the colours of the suit I bought. I think this one looks good too. I like the cut away effect.

The wrap style of this stunner is universally-flattering, and the compression means everything will stay in place while you dive into adventure.

Quite pricey (esp with delivery from Oz) but check out Sheila May Swims - they use lots of different body shapes and sizes in their photos as well on insta so you can see how the different styles look.

DoleWhipDiva · 07/07/2026 07:10

To add to the above they often have really good sales with big discounts - good chance if you're not fussy about colours/patterns to try them out at a lower price. i had to size down on the bottoms when i ordered

Divebar2021 · 07/07/2026 07:12

I used to be a size 18 and did buy a couple of bikinis for a trip to California. They were very glamorous and “push up” but on the beach I actually felt trussed up. Finding something that you can put on and then feel comfortable in is worth more than whether your stomach look I cm flatter or not.

I’m an Apple shape. Cannot do a tankini as the separates just ride up over my belly and make me took like I’m on a pregnancy photo shoot. Also hate ruching, frills, knots etc as they just seem to emphasise how far my belly sticks out. I also have skinny legs and no bum.
I bought this cheapo one piece from Amazon last year and it gave me good support and shape

I’m a 14 with big tummy and have this from pour moi (next) it’s got structured cups and detachable straps, I felt it was very flattering on.

If you're going to the beach in Italy you'll not see a tankini, or a board short, or a swim skirt, they do not give a hoot about covering up. There will be 18 year old supermodels and Nonnas and everything in between in a bikini, get something you like and get out there. You're not the only apple shaped 14-16 out there, rest assured. Have a lovely holiday.

I have the same shape and much prefer to wear swim shorts and a tankini top. Means I don't have to worry about my bikini line too!

YouMightLikeIt · 08/07/2026 10:25

I felt compelled to help you out, as I am an apple who tried on almost every style of costume last year.

I have this one, and another pattern in the same style. 👇🏻

Don't be afraid of the low cleavage area - it's surprisingly supportive.

The back comes up high enough that it doesn't create over-hang by cutting into fatty tissue.

It's glam enough not to feel frumpy, but covers and shapes the body nicely. It also comes in lots of colours, however patterns or black is an apple-shapes friend!

If I was looking for costumes, I'd definitely also look at the M&S monochrome one somebody recommended up thread - it looks to be a similar style.

Best of luck! 👙

I'm apple too and I always just wear a sporty suit with little swim shorts in dark colours, feel fine in that. Added problem I find is that most swimsuits seem to have little to no bust support but sporty suits have a 'bust shelf' in the which is what I need. Got mine from Sports Direct.

ForPinkDuck · 08/07/2026 22:46

I got a wrap swimming costume from primark of all places, it has a deep v. Ive had loads of complements.

newtothisgreenstuff · 08/07/2026 23:17

I’m not an apple, the opposite a pear. However something to try based on using more fabric for comfort which seems logical to me anyway Boden swimwear comes in longer sizes. While I’m not tall at 5’5 I have longer body and find their longer swimwear give me room to stretch across my uncomfortable bits and doesn’t look loose as it is swimwear fabric.

A swimsuit won’t cover my terrible legs which at least seems a problem you don’t have but the extra fabric allowed me to cover what I wanted to and stay in place while being thick and in nice colours which makes it feel nice.

I wonder if the long length would give you the space you need to feel comfortable around your tummy without feeling like your bottoms half is being squashed and squeezed out the sides.

TheBewleySisters · 09/07/2026 13:48

I prefer a tankini, and you can get ones that are bra sized (i.e. in your cup size) in various place, I prefer Bravissimo. I prefer them to swimsuits for another reason - much easier to go to the loo and not have to take the swimsuit off to wee!

Thanks everyone. Some of these suggestions are perfect for me too.

Second pp. This is prefect- I'm got a tummy too and just rebuy this - I'm on my fourth or so in about 10 years, I always have 2 on the go. Honestly it's the perfect fat tummy swimsuit. Can wear with or without straps

Tempted to buy the green too!

It was great with or without steaks and the cups gave me shape. It’s not too high cut either.

dontcallmelen · Yesterday 20:56

@YouMightLikeIt my dd just bought the exact same costume it looks fabulous on her, she said it’s the most comfortable swimsuit she has ever bought.

dontcallmelen · Yesterday 21:00

Another vote for pour moi some styles come in different lengths, they aren’t very high cut & give good bum coverage.
