Just want to celebrate that I wore a bikini at our local pool today, the first time in a very long time and I feel great about it.
if you feel your bikini days are behind you maybe they are not. Certainly in Europe women seem to wear bikinis at all ages, we can do it too.

I wish I didn't care what I looked like but I do.

Wofflewaffle · 29/06/2026 22:03

Umm I don’t think it’s age that’s the issue. I’ve been a size 18-20 and wobbly with it for a long time. Surely wearing a bikini is more to do with size than age?

katepilar · 29/06/2026 22:08

Are you expected to stop wearing bikini and wear a costume when you are a certain age or shape/size?

Caterpillargirl23 · 29/06/2026 22:08

I would say body shape rather than size or age is more important.

Good for you. I agree in other countries women of all shapes and sizes and ages seem to wear bikinis. I just can't bring myself to do it

I wouldn’t want to be the only woman on the beach in a bikini and nothing would induce me to sunbathe topless. But I find one pieces uncomfortable and let’s face it, most people don’t look that great in swimwear. A few inches of visible midriff isn’t going to make a massive difference.

cupfinalchaos · 29/06/2026 22:25

I’m 58 and just worn a bikini in Italy. No one has to look if they don’t like it. Having said that I’m a size 8 and not too wrinkly yet so look ok ish I guess.

Denim4ever · 29/06/2026 22:29

I'm tall and over 60, I stopped wearing all in one cosies when I was 12. The only all in one I wear is a wet suit. Go for it 😀

BellaVita · 29/06/2026 22:39

I am nearly 61 and wear bikinis.

I tried a bikini once - hated it. Even as a size 6. I find them an uncomfortable, fiddly faff.

emmetgirl · 29/06/2026 22:42

I’m 59 and wore a bikini on holiday in January.
Next January I’ll be wearing one again on holiday and by then I’ll be 60. I look ok but tbh I don’t really care. If anyone doesn’t like how I look they can look at something else.

SixAndJuliet · 29/06/2026 22:50

I actually look pretty good in a bikini but have gone for strapless swimsuits for my upcoming holiday because I can’t be bothered with sun creaming my tummy and back.

LejlaKapovic · 29/06/2026 22:51

I'm in my 30s and wear swimming leggings, a long sleeved swimming shirt and a sun hat. Mostly because I have light, sun-sensitive skin that burns to the point that I get blisters, even when I apply SPF 50. But, I also don't understand the appeal of essentially wearing polyester or nylon underwear in public.

GlomOfNit · 29/06/2026 22:52

Having read a recent 'Peter and Jane' post on FB, about a woman who must be about my age and not skinny, who had a fuck-it moment and wore a bikini, I had my own fuck-it moment and am currently trying to find one that works.

But ... it's not an age thing for me. After being mostly a 14 for many years, I'm now 16-18 and have a HUGE menopausal belly. I wish I knew why. I'm not eating that much. I could kid myself it's bloating but it never goes down and I've got the same amount of fat covering most of my body. It just doesn't shift. I mostly wear flappy linen tents, or dresses that fit to the bust and then flare out a lot. I have an 'apron belly' that hangs over my pubic area and it makes me feel SO self-conscious. Sad And obviously it's slug-belly white.

So far, I've bought a couple of Figleaves high-waisted bikini bottoms off Vinted (they're new with tags!) and they look like brightly coloured nappies on me, but at least hide the apron. I can't imagine braving it and baring that part of me with a lower cut.

The southern European country we always go to, you rarely see other women of my age in one-piece and it'd be great to just put on a skirt or something over a bikini, rather than wrestling out of a tight, soggy one-piece before having lunch somewhere. I'm just not sure I can, though.

Jinglehop · 29/06/2026 22:57

Age 57, wore a bikini last weekend. Fit is everything and wearing something that follows the lines of your body is even more important when you have more lines.

My mum wore bikinis until her very last day on the beach at age 85.

Bikini + body = Bikini body

This! Is there a British rule that has an age cut off for bikini wearing?

minipoodlemum · 29/06/2026 23:41

55 and I have a sizeable collection of bikinis. I have been a 16, a 10 and currently a 12. Whatever my size, ,y stomach always looks much nicer with a tan.

TeflonBoot · 29/06/2026 23:45

Just come back from a week in Greece and I'd say 90% of women were in bikinis. Young old, short tall, wobbly, toned, all body shapes were on show and no one cared. BTW 58 and did wear a bikini

Whynottryagain · 29/06/2026 23:51

trying29 · 29/06/2026 20:03

I dont understand this. Im 41 and always wear a bikini - whatever size. noone in Europe cares about this. it makes me so sad that every woman I know wears a swimsuit. You never see a man - fat or thin old or young - trying to cover up at the seaside/pool!

I wear a costume with full sleeves and cycling short length legs but there's no need to pity me! I'm very body confident, but a) loathe wearing sunscreen b) burn easily, c) read that sunscreen in water can damage the wildlife eg bleach coral, and d) I get cold in water easily.

bellventrico · 29/06/2026 23:55

In my 60s and just bought 2 bikinis - all my friends wear them too

EconomyClassRockstar · 30/06/2026 00:38

I was 47 when I switched to bikinis. I realized I wasn't hiding anything in a one piece and bikinis are more comfortable, both to relax in and to swim in. Never going back!

unambiguousbeard · 30/06/2026 00:54

I'm 58, would never occur to me to not wear a bikini or that it's even something worth mentioning let alone posting about.

RedTreeLeaf · 30/06/2026 01:17

I don’t want anyone to see my disgusting wobbly belly so can’t imagine ever wearing a bikini again. I love swimming but hate that you’re supposed to do it nearly naked. I tried boy style swim shorts with a tankini top but hate the way they cling and flap when wet. I hate my ageing body it’s disgusting and gross.
