DELIA SMITH.

I mean, what????? How could she? I shouldn't have come into work today if I'd known someone was going to say something like that to me

And the worst thing is that someone else once told me this (about 10 years ago) and I've never got over it. She has always been a byword for 'eeugh' in my mum's book. So I've just been told (for the second time) that I look like someone who my mum has always said is revolting. Great.

Jeez. What can I do so that I look less like Delia bleedin' Smith?

Given that I have short dark hair and am just ordinary looking. And I'm 37.

I'm gutted. Really, quite seriously upset.

Cindy Lauper. And I was only 18!

Hassled · 24/06/2008 10:48

Anne Diamond of Good Morning Britain fame. I really, really don't.

You can't possibly look like Delia if you're a) only 37 and b) not wearing a Canaries scarf - whoever told you is clearly insane, so just dismiss it from your mind.

It could be worse. You could have had someone tell you what my MIL told me once ...

"You look rather like Dawn French, dear. You're not as pretty, mind, but from a distance ..."

mellyonion · 24/06/2008 10:52

my evil mil ALWAYS goes on at my very attractive friend that she looks like dawn french, which she hated..now she tells her she reminds her of nessa from gavin and stacey!!

i'm sure you don't look like delia at all....did you forget to take your pinny off before work? is that it maybe??

twinkletoesbellyrolls · 24/06/2008 10:54

hairdresser told me I look like Honey from Eastenders (Billy Mitchell's dippy girlfriend). Had to go home and google her!

CountessDracula · 24/06/2008 10:57

lapin you so do NOT look like her!!

I was told once I looked like Elizabeth Taylor

I didn't dare to ask whether they meant when she was young and beautiful or old, bloated and fat. Obv I choose to believe the former...

I think she is too, lapin.

It was the "from a distance" bit - and the "not so pretty" bit - which had me a bit

Seasider · 24/06/2008 11:08

Fatima Whitbread!! I was not happy and only a teenager at the time. Also Crystal Tipps, remember that cartoon. It was in the days of my big triangle bob....

suzywong · 24/06/2008 11:09

Pauline Collins

funnypeculiar · 24/06/2008 11:10

I was recently told I looked like Lucinda from The Apprentice. I don't even OWN a berret

CK - maybe you smell deliciously of homebaked cakes?

Seasider · 24/06/2008 11:11

FP I really liked Lucinda's style, so could be a compliment...

hoppybird · 24/06/2008 11:12

Cindy Lauper was cool back then!

When I was a teenager, I was compared to Joan Collins - it was in the 80s, and Dynasty was big. I know she was glamorous back in the day etc, but she was WAY old (I thought at the time). When I cut my hair very short (still a teenager) EVERYONE insisted I was Liza Minnelli, which I really didn't like, especially as I DO NOT LOOK LIKE Liza Minnelli.

re: Delia Smith - she always wears some sort of fringe, if sometimes swept to the side - to look less like Delia Smith, attempt to grow out your fringe maybe?

lackaDAISYcal · 24/06/2008 11:12

Velma/Thelma from Scooby Doo

cheers

funnypeculiar · 24/06/2008 11:13

Ss, I know what you mean, I liked her too. But trust me, it wasn't a compliment, it was a 'you are a flaky loon' comment

bigmouthstrikesagain · 24/06/2008 11:13

Work colleagues refered to me as Miss Jones! years ago - which made me feel great.

cupsoftea · 24/06/2008 11:13

what a thing to say - ignore - did the one who said this too you look something like "this cook"

allgonebellyup · 24/06/2008 11:14

er, Tom Cruise (!) and Sandra Bullock! plus Sophie Ellis Bextor

cariboo · 24/06/2008 11:15

My mum used to tell me I reminded her of Audrey Hepburn (wow! what a rush!) but that was when I weighed about 8 stone, 20 yrs ago.

CaptainKarvol · 24/06/2008 11:16

perhaps this is helping a little bit . I'm going to have words with my hairdresser...

Am fascinated by all these other look(not-at-all)alikes, is making me most curious about the real you's behind the screen

Still feeling very sorry for myself, but will attempt to smile brightly cos DELIA always looks quite miserable...

OP posts:
funnypeculiar · 24/06/2008 11:17

Oh, yes, I had Audrey Hepburn comment a few times at my wedding

I'm very interested in your Tom Cruise/Sophie Ellis Bexter look, allgonebellyup...

cupsoftea · 24/06/2008 11:18

Don't linger in the frozen food section

MissingMyHeels · 24/06/2008 11:18

I have been told I look like Kirsty Allsop a couple of times - I don't, I just have dark hair! People just pick on one feature like that and roll with it.
