WhatToWearMilan · 11/06/2026 12:29

If you were very pale skinned, strawberry blonde & not good in heat generally but you had a dinner with a professional contact in Milan in July, what would you wear?

50yrs old 5ft 9" & size 12

I want to look as good as i can! There will possibly be some sightseeing and lunch / dinner / drinks

I have the smarter cotton cullotes from there (fixed waistband) and they would be great with a slight airy white or chambray shirt to look smarter. I have worn mine with wackier blouses and they look really good and are pretty good for warm weather.

I expect having blonde hair and a porcelain complexion might get attention as unusual there. Why not enhance your skin with a primer/moisturiser that has a light reflecting type glow and pink blusher for rosy cheeks.

I think she's undecided. 😆 Since when did style and beauty attract such arseholes?

Aluna · 14/06/2026 21:51

Lots of conflicting opinions on linen on this thread. I think it depends on whether you care if it gets a bit crumpled or not. Some think it looks unkempt, others think it's part of its relaxed appeal. If it's a linen-blend, it tends to be a bit more resistant to creasing.

There’s an art to wrinkle-free linen - starch when you iron. But I only wear linen dresses - they don’t get particularly crumpled. I wouldn’t wear linen trousers.

I am an utter slattern - I don't iron!!!

Well, not if I can help it ...which is probably why I don't own much linen clothing! I am very impressed that you starch your linen ...

Well, admittedly I think that you & Ceramiq may have diametrically opposed tastes in fashion - & possibly very different clothing budgets!!!

The OP wants to look great while dining & sightseeing/going for drinks in Milan with a wealthy, elegant work contact. I'm not sure that Uniqlo would be my first choice either (though I think they're great for lots of things).

Are these the culottes you have from Uniqlo - which look more skirt-like in photos? They're nice in cream with a cream top - though I'm the same colouring as the OP & would look like a milk bottle in that outfit!

White or black are fine, as they give enough contrast with my skin & hair - but I vanish in cream. The OP might feel differently though!

Choconuttolata · 15/06/2026 00:05

I do not iron, life is too short. Thankfully my DH is very particular about ironing otherwise I would look a dishevelled mess all the time.

@3:58 from an Italian fashion blogger, personal stylist/image consultant- "wrinkled Linen is fine, in Italy if your linen is too perfect people might get suspicious"

@mcmuffin22 I forgot to add the picture. They're nice but I think a bit too low-key/casual.

2 of your links, Wilson and Carter and Wright London are drop shipping sites selling tat available from Amazon and Shein.

Francestein · 15/06/2026 03:24

You could buy a fantastic parasol. It could match or stylishly clash with your outfit.

Nope, they're these Cotton Culottes

Hephebe · 15/06/2026 08:57

I also take a somewhat relaxed approach to linen (I am not one of nature's ironers) - that's part of its charm 😁

Personally I think Uniqlo would be fine if well chosen/appropriately styled. There can sometimes be a bit of uneasiness of the wrong brands on S&B but in real life I've never walked round a city and shrunk in horror from what I'm 100% sure is New Look or TU. (I have, however, seen plenty of rich people looking cheap in polyester designer ready-to-wear!)

I don’t either tbf, i have an ironing lady for everything apart from the items that need to be done to my spec.

Well for the poster who said I do not iron, life is too short, life is also seemingly too short to check that the 2 obviously fake "London" websites she posted links to are actually drop shipping sites selling cheap Chinese tat, which are impossible to return. So not sure I'd set much stock by her advice.

Cotton and linen need to be ironed. They will inevitably crease during the day as you wear them, and that's fine, but it's impossible to avoid ironing.

Choconuttolata · 15/06/2026 10:18

@PhaedraTwo if you or the OP don't like the items posted I am not forcing anyone to buy them. I posted them more for the style ideas anyway. I don't always have time to check every link no, but I am not employed to do so. People can look at the items and decide for themselves if it is something they like or the quality they wish for.

It is possible to avoid ironing if you have a DH who loves it 😉!

Where did you even find those links? They're clearly fake. It's obvious from a cursory glance at the "store fronts" they're 2 of these scam "London" sites. It took a couple of seconds maximum to see they are fake.

I don't post links to a site unless it's a site I'm familiar with. You were posting as if you knew what you were talking about. I've never fallen for a site like that, because I do know what I'm talking about when it comes to clothes but there are posters on this board who have been tricked by that type of site.

It is 100% possible to avoid ironing cotton and linen 😃 I simply do not do it, unless things have dried badly. (I line dry most of the year, and am very careful about how I hang things. It's the same when I dry indoors on the maiden.)

We all have different priorities!

You can be sure the actual garments they send will be nothing like the pics.

Ceramiq · 15/06/2026 10:50

Milanese restaurants and indeed Milanese business people set enormous store by appearance. There is no point discussing the OP and throwing Uniqlo and Chinese drop ship and the relative merits of ironing into the mix - none of those things meet the bare minimum floor standard of acceptable self-presentation for the event the OP describes.

Choconuttolata · 15/06/2026 13:20

@WhatToWearMilan I apologise for posting Chinese tat links on your thread. I didn't mean to lead you down the garden path of poor quality fabrics. I hope you find something beautiful and classy to wear.
