If you were very pale skinned, strawberry blonde & not good in heat generally but you had a dinner with a professional contact in Milan in July, what would you wear?

50yrs old 5ft 9" & size 12

I want to look as good as i can! There will possibly be some sightseeing and lunch / dinner / drinks

Have you thought about using uniqlo airism? Simple basics, the fabric being the main thing. Then good sandals, bag, jewellery.

I lived in Milan for over 20 years. I would say smart casual. No sleeveless tops, and no cropped trousers. For example black trousers and a plain white short-sleeved top would do the trick, and maybe a necklace if you can stand it round your neck in the heat! I wonder if you will be taken to Savini's in the Galleria! Wear comfortable shoes. The older streets are paved.

https://www.massimodutti.com/gb/100-linen-midi-dress-l06624747 What about something like this? Would suit your colouring. Simple but it looks expensive, and can dress up or down.

I love this! It’s very ‘Milan’ but at a great price. Do you know if their sizes are (roughly) accurate?

Yes good colour, great price.

My daughter hasn’t spoken to me for over one month as I said she needed to find extra care for her dog other than relying me for back up.
she’s 31 and the last time she did this we didn’t speak for 3 months. She went abroad to stay with her dad and his partner without telling me. I’ve found this very difficult and depressing. As I live alone, and not many close friends, no family etc. I’m loathe to go round to apologise, not that I’ve done anything wrong, just open my self up for a load of retribution. Any advise Tia

You need to start your own thread.
I think you've posted her in error. 💐

This is interesting as i wear lots of black generally & i have a fab black COS dress but worried it might be a no no in heat

Black is a great shout, especially if you are wearing linen and/or a summery dress which is otherwise more relaxed. It makes everything look much less 'holiday abroad'. And appropriate for meeting a professional contact. Always chic.

Fabulous blouse!!! With a pair of the cream wide-leg trousers, the OP would look like a lemon meringue pie - in a good way!!

Though her work colleague might be a bit distracted by the overall fabulousness of the blouse ...

That is a very fabulous blouse!

But feels like it might be too much in 30+ degrees?

So many more options to browse now - thank you all!!

I love the me+em drsss & hush set

I like both of those suggestions too. I like the Hush set best in either black or khaki. What is your COS dress like?

I would go for something like this and a pair of sandals. Silk keeps you cool and you won't get burned shoulders by day:

I've been admiring this dress for ages. In all three colours!!!

Lots of posters on MN say they wouldn't wear silk in heat due to it marking from perspiration. But with a decent antiperspirant I've never found it a problem. Black would ensure it was definitely not an issue, but the OP would really suit both other colours.

I’ve always found their stuff ‘true to size’!

I have that blouse, in a very pale yellow stripe with cream ribbon. It's not hot at all - I bought it (in a sale, lucky me) for my summer holidays in Italy when I want to try to look as glamorous as the Milanese!

AutumnChild99 · 13/06/2026 10:56

Some really good suggestions for linen or silk dresses. Choose natural, good-quality fabrics and whatever you wear, make sure it's ironed!

I think you'll have outglammed the Milanese in that blouse! I really love it!

I'm so sorry, but if someone sat opposite me in a restaurant wearing that I wouldn't be able to eat for laughing 🫣

ThreeLocusts · 13/06/2026 15:23

Hi OP, I'm crap in heat as I have MS (makes you susceptible to temperature extremes). I'd above all invest in a hat - a broad-brimmed straw hat makes life in the sun way better ime. Shades help too.

Other than that, I'm the opposite of a clothes horse so no suggestions, sorry. The clothing threads on MN are the only ones I find remotely interesting, perhaps because they involve practical situations and real people with specific needs.

Btw. luckily some of the fanciest locations in Milan are in arcades, and the churches stay cool in summer. Don't miss the fresco of hell in the duomo, it's memorable.

@Omghelpme I think you wanted to start a new thread, not post on one about clothing in Milan. Sorry your daughter is behaving like this, it sounds messed up. But to get more advice, I think you'd need to give more info - how old is your daughter, what are the 'normal' living arrangements, how does coparenting with ex work?
Anyway, I hope you can sort this out.
