Dress to get married in (NOT for a wedding!)

Nowedding · 27/05/2026 10:04

After over 25 years of being engaged we're getting married. Not telling anyone apart from DC who are now old enough to be witnesses.
I DON'T want a wedding dress, want something I can wear again. I'm 54, size 22/24, 5ft 8. DP may well just turn up in shorts...
Budget - under £150

@SeriousFaffing , something like that but without the ruffles would be great

Are you even wanting to get married?
I tend to downplay things that make me uncomfortable or I don't want to do. The fact that you don't want to get dressed up or have a wedding seems to me that you might as well stay as you are.

Not everyone wants to waste money and peoples' time having a lavish wedding and "getting dressed up". That doesn't mean those people don't value actually getting married to someone they love. Both my DH and I were wearing ski boots and ski gear when we got married and it was (and still is nearly 30 years later) very very memorable and even if I didn't do it that way, we wouldn't have had a conventional wedding.

Why did it take him so long? Read all the marriage stories on here. Please.

I love the black with roses one OP, it feels classy and romantic but also you. The happiest marriage I know of the groom was Captain Hook and the bride was Marie Antoinette, so wear what you want and are happy in 💜

I like Pretty Kitty Fashion for vintage style floral dresses, I got my bridesmaids dresses from there. Most of their range only goes up to UK22 but there are some options up to 26:

Light Blue Lace Trim Milkmaid Midi Dress | New Look https://www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/dresses/light-blue-lace-trim-milkmaid-midi-dress/p/952089245

Something alongside these lines.

Pretty, comes in 4 colours and can be dressed up to look a bit more wedding like or down for a lunch date.

Oooh! I love this! 😍

Why do you assume that it was him holding up the wedding? Do you think quick marriages are better? You assume a lot about their finances and situation. Not everyone wants to lead a traditional life.

Christ, are we in the 1950's?

Some of the attitudes on here are ridiculous.

Nowedding · 29/05/2026 16:12

Life held it up. Like I said, together over 25 years, v happy together, no issues, just want to get married to make sure legal things in place if anything happens to one of us.

I think that poster is referring to all the threads where unmarried women have had children, given up worked or only worked part time, haven't built up a pension pot, aren't even on title deeds and realise in their 50s what a precarious financial position they are in.

@Nowedding

You don’t need to explain yourself, OP. Hope you have a wonderful day which is just as you both want it x

BeanMeUp · 30/05/2026 05:46

I get it @Nowedding we turned up dressed so casually that they didn't even realise it was our wedding 😆

I'm a similar size and whenever I've needed a dress for something (im not a natural dress wearer!) I've generally found I've ended up with something from Joe Brown's. You can get their plus sizes from Simply Be and potentially Next online.

marthasmum · 30/05/2026 08:11

Hi OP, I am not very stylish so can’t advise on style! However I just wanted to say we are doing what you’re doing - getting married after 30 years with just DC as witnesses. I think I know where you’re coming from as I too have low budget and have considered just going in normal clothes as I really don’t want wedding fuss. However I happened to find a dress in a charity shop that I loved on myself for another occasion, and thought I’d wear that for the wedding too. So as another PP said, maybe just choose something you really like? It sounds like you are confident in your own tastes and as others have said, no one needs to approve it but you. Hope you have the best day.

I'm referring to 'why did it take him so long?'. The poster is implying it's the man's decision.

Nowedding · 30/05/2026 08:54

@marthasmum hope you have a lovely day! Think I've chosen what to wear. DPs ring arrived yesterday, mine should come today - so all organised!

Great, hope you have a fabulous day! Love him in his shorts - my DP will turn up in jeans and a fleece I expect…

Sobriety78 · 30/05/2026 10:05

Have you had a look on Shein? I got a dress to wear for a wedding earlier this year and paid £10.27.

Dress to get married in (NOT for a wedding!)
Mercurial1 · 30/05/2026 18:20

I've got zero style advice, but congratulations. I absolutely love that you're so down to earth. I'm sure you'll look beautiful and radiant in anything. It's about the marriage, not the wedding.

JustAMum90 · 30/05/2026 22:12

Congratulations @Nowedding ☺️

DH and I got married last year after 15 years together - just us, DC and 2 witnesses (DC too young to do it unfortunately!). We went to a registry office and then out for a meal locally and were back on the couch cuddled up with DC watching a movie by 7pm 🤣🤣
The big fuss is just not my cup of tea 🤣

I couldn’t decide between a “wedding dress” or just a normal outfit but ended up going with a very very simple wedding dress from Monsoon.

Phase Eight is my usual go to for occasions ☺️ Lots of their styles seem to fit me well. I’m size 20-22 and 5’5” ish.

Hope you have a lovely day whatever you decide to wear ☺️

RampantIvy · 31/05/2026 07:23

Marriage is about much more than a dress and a party.

I totally agree @Nowedding
I feel like shouting this out on all the bridezilla threads.

I hope you find something you like and have a wonderful day 💐
