Help! We are going to a wedding in August. It’s a guy I work with. I wasn’t a bit worried about it untill everyone in the office starting talking.

They are a gay couple who are well known in “social circles” and it’s a large wedding.

What the hell does a 50 something mum and her 60 something husband wear? (Well don’t care about husband he wears a suit. The dress code is no black tie formal.

size 18-20 Don’t mind what the price is so long as it’s worth it.

All suggestions welcome.

Ok, the usual sort of questions:

  • What do you like? Colours, shapes, fabrics, dress/separates, general vibe.
  • Is the wedding in a field or a city hotel?
  • When you say you don't mind the price, what does that mean? Can you spend £100s, £1000s?
  • Do you prefer to shop in person or online, or both ok?
Ginghamtablecloth · 22/05/2026 11:54

Ok thanks. It is in a 5 star hotel. The whole thing. I’m a soft summer so Smokey colours suit me best and I suit fit and flare type gifs not columns. I like youthful but not mutton. Love flowing skirts fitted tops. Budget in hundred max.

Budget less than £1000

£100 or £1000??

Eucatastrophilia · 22/05/2026 13:31

Is that
‘No black tie - but formal’?

or

’Please don’t wear anything formal’?

(I honestly don’t understand why you think a woman of fifty should have particular difficulty dressing for a wedding. Surely the whole point of the celebration is to bring together the multiple generations of two families, along with their friends?)

CurlewKate · 22/05/2026 13:37

Glitter and rainbows. That’s definitely what you wear to a “gay wedding”…..

What's wrong with the OP looking for inspiration for something suitable? Why post if you're going to be so dismissive?

Okay - nothing like a bit of stereotyping.

Or maybe something sophisticated would be more suitable?

Pretty sure that was a sarcastic comment highlighting that dressing for 'gay' weddings in no different from dressing for straight weddings...

PhaedraTwo · 22/05/2026 13:49

What the hell does a 50 something mum

What does being a mum have to do with it?

On a budget of up to £1,000 I could have helped but with this comment, "I like youthful but not mutton" I won't.

Also failing to see the relevance of it being a gay couple.

That was clearly sarcasm.

This sounds like a fantastic occasion & if it were me I would go for a long dress and some really glam jewellery. I live in Ireland and love McElhinneys (Donegal) which is renowned for wedding style. They deliver.
Have a great time.

Stop focusing on the fact the people getting married are gay.

Rixo dresses are great for weddings and they do lots in larger sizes.

https://rixolondon.com/products/meera-dress-chelsea-floral-black a friend of mine wore this as her actual wedding dress recently in a larger size and she looked amazing- she had it adjusted to be less low at the front.

If it's formal but not black tie, your husband can just wear a lounge suit- if the grooms are wearing morning suits he could also consider a morning suit but it's not required (and they probably won't be).

A woman stands facing away, wearing the Meera - Chelsea Floral Black long dress with an orange, pink, and green floral print. She carries a small black fringed purse. The backdrop is plain and light-colored.

We’ve reimagined our iconic Meera Gown in the new Chelsea Bloom floral print. Crafted from lightweight chiffon, this floral chiffon gown feels airy and flowy. The long sleeves have a subtle billowing effect inspired by the ‘70s, reworked with a contemp...

I second Wolf and Badger! Good luck. Ignore all grouchy, unhelpful people on here.

honeylulu · 22/05/2026 14:18

Do you like long or mid length usually?
What is your figure/shape?
Are there aspects of your figure you like to show off or others you prefer to hide?
What sort of shoes/heel height do you think you'll be wearing?

This will help us make useful suggestions.
