Gay society wedding!!!

Help! We are going to a wedding in August. It’s a guy I work with. I wasn’t a bit worried about it untill everyone in the office starting talking.

They are a gay couple who are well known in “social circles” and it’s a large wedding.

What the hell does a 50 something mum and her 60 something husband wear? (Well don’t care about husband he wears a suit. The dress code is no black tie formal.

size 18-20 Don’t mind what the price is so long as it’s worth it.

All suggestions welcome.

Also look a pics of society weddings for inspo.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 23/05/2026 07:58

What a bin fire. Could have helped, but preferred to judge.

OP I have no idea, but take a breath. With a budget like that you can look fabulous!

As it happens I saw a very curvy woman in a stretchy glittery dress in all the colours, and was amazed how good she looked. She was doing a before and after, and looked good in both sizes. It was far more forgiving than I’d imagined.

So if you do want glitter and rainbows, it’s out there!

A friend of mine, similar size to you, mid 40s, recently wore this to a wedding. I thought she looked fabulous. It's a scarlett and Jo dress

That swishing noise you heard? It was the point zooming over your head.

Give it a rest. You think you're witty.

Offleyhoo · 23/05/2026 12:24

Just to say, ignoring all the scrapping above, do not stress AT ALL. Some people will have amazing outfits ofc, others will just wear something nice that suits their style and shape. Just not pure white or pure black! We went to a similar London event and I was v stressed, ended up wearing my kind of thing and was all absolutely fine.

It's an open forum. I will judge anyone who thinks "mutton" or "mutton dressed as lamb" has any place in a discussion about women's clothes.

What the hell does a 50 something mum

What does being a mum have to do with it?

On a budget of up to £1,000 I could have helped but with this comment, "I like youthful but not mutton" I won't.

Also failing to see the relevance of it being a gay couple.

Crickey did you get out of bed the wrong side?

A671090 · 23/05/2026 12:45

OP Have a look at Me and Em - they have some lovely dresses /jumpsuits and I find they fit really well! Also a 50 something mum (but apparently your not allowed to say that) good luck!

Why would anyone care about judgement from a stranger on the internet? Your opinions are of no relevance whatsoever to others.

Mums often have a completely different shape, its very relevant. Why shouldnt she include it?

If that is the case, why are any of us here if not for opinions?
I too would prefer we don't do ourselves others down with ageist and misogynist terms like frump and mutton.

Sometimes, just sometimes, you don’t need to be a dick.

The OP wants help to find a nice dress for a wedding - that’s all. She’s setting the context. If you don’t like the words she used move on. This isn’t the thread for you. It’s completely unnecessary for you to insult her.

OP, I hope someone comes along soon with a fabulous outfit for you.

newrubylane · 23/05/2026 14:32

Try Wolf and Badger, OP!

I would also search up the venue , there might be some photos of past weddings and you'll get an idea from that ?

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 23/05/2026 15:48

I think it’s a real shame that people have picked up on the OP being slightly out of her comfort zone, and chosen to intensify it. If you didn’t like the mutton comment, you could have reassured her that she can choose what she likes, her age doesn’t matter.

Specialagentblond · 23/05/2026 17:52

Westwood?

December2025 · 24/05/2026 13:09

Being a 50 year old mum is a very relevant fact.
Our bodies change as we age and often being a mum means we might need to be more active on the day or like me I had a C-section and an "apron" belly.
Why people are getting on at the OP so much is beyond me.

UserM6 · 24/05/2026 13:35

Ignore all the snide comments Op. Theres nothing wrong with adding context.

I always recommend Metamorphoza ( of tomato dress fame) as their dress are well made, well designed and suit larger figures.
You can but on Wolf &Badger but much cheaper to go direct. They are in the EU and ship quickly if in stock or they make them up in a few weeks. Also means you can do a cheeky request to have longer or shorter.
Summer dress

Ginghamtablecloth · 24/05/2026 14:45

Heavens! The bitches are out in force! If I hadn’t given context I’d have been asked. Thanks everyone who actually answered the question I have some solids leads now. X

Some makes, Me&Em, Rixo and Vivian Westwood don’t do size 18-20. Rico XL is a 16. Look for XXL.

Boden do have larger sizes and have a few decent offerings at the moment for stylish summer events. I’ve attached a few. All are available in 18 or 20. Boden aren’t that generous around bigger boobs so a 20 might be necessary. Yes, mostly pink though!
