Has anyone tried on this Hush dress?

I've been looking for a navy summer dress and am drawn to this Hush one:

https://www.hush-uk.com/int/esta-pintuck-jersey-midi-dress-navy-pinstripe/015128-1658.html

I'm 5"2 and size 10/12 apple shape and am a bit worried it would swamp me. Has anyone tried it on?

I have and I liked it, but not quite enough for the price tag, it was nice enough on but not wow. I'm much taller than you though almost 5 10 and pretty straight up and down (bit of a mum tum) size 10/12 , I ended up buying a similar one in next for less than half the price

Oh really? Do you have a link to the Next dress please?

I do think Hush quality doesn't always match the price, that's another issue!

I never understand this ‘swamping’ notion. Either it fits you at the waist, and in length, or it doesn’t. If the hem needs shortening you do that. The way to tell if a dress works for you is to try it on and see how you feel!

(That said, I’ve never tried anything from Hush, so 🤷‍♀️)

Lilyargin · 18/05/2026 14:46

I think that anything with that elasticated ruching is going to emphasise any hint of stomach. As you say you are apple-shaped I would avoid, personally.

SisterMaryLuke · 18/05/2026 14:53

I thought it was ruched at first, but it isn't, so potentially could be really flattering/smoothing.

It isn't actually ruched but perhaps you are right.

There is a Boden shift dress that might work better.

It's hard to tell isn't it?

It doesn't look as though it has elasticated ruching: it has pintucks top and bottom of a wide fixed waistband as far as I can see. As long as it isn't too long in the body, the bodice shouldn't bag over at the waist and it would only need the hem taking up on someone short.

beasmithwentworth · 18/05/2026 17:38

I am 5’2 and an apple too - possibly a bit more of a rounded apple than you as I’m 12-14. I love that dress!! Exactly the kind of thing I would wear. I’m sorely tempted. I have 2 dresses to take back to Uniqlo that would add up to this one.

I suppose the only way to know is to order it (or try it on of course. I am zone 2 in London but never seem to be in easy reach of this kind of thing and hate shopping)

Are you going to go for it OP?

ENesbit · 18/05/2026 17:44

I have just sent that dress back today! I am 5’2, size 14 , apple shape , and it was very flattering. The reason I didn’t keep it was because the neck line was strangely loose and gape-y. , and it annoyed me. Otherwise , I loved it and it would have been a really useful dress for work .

I'm still thinking about it but I am leaning towards yes. It looks like such a lovely dress and it would be perfect for summer.

Oh!!! Great to hear it's a lovely dress but annoying about the gaping. That would bother me too.

If you're looking for a simple navy linen dress, I have this and I absolutely love it. I have received so many compliments. It's so simple but still really nicely structured, it works with everything.

Edited

You aren't petite, nor do you have big boobs.

Someone short can find that the waist is too low. Taking the hem up doesn't help this.

Someone with big boobs can have to size up to accommodate their boobs and end up with a dress that's baggy on the waist and hips and too short at the front because of the boobs needing extra fabric vertically as well as horizontally.

Hmm

Odd response - unless we’ve met you couldn’t possibly know my height. I’m around 5’3 and very accustomed to having clothes altered.

And surely the only way to find out if a dress fits is to try it on?

Yeah of course the only way for me personally to know if a dress fits is to try it on. However, it's useful to find out from other people of similar height and size whether it worked for them. I always read website reviews for this reason but there are none for this dress on the Hush website.

I am also very used to getting clothes altered but since I live in Ireland and would have to order online, the dress works out reasonably expensive before factoring in alternations. I thought it might be worthwhile to ask opinions before ordering (and people have been very helpful!)

This is an absolutely beautiful dress but unfortunately I have big arms and I'm not sure it would suit.

Just found a similar dress on the Cos website for anyone interested in this style

This looks nice, do think it would work with boobs? 36F here

Oops wrong thread!

Well, that's odd. It very much seems to be the same dress - at a third of the price - and says it's by Cos!

SisterMaryLuke · Yesterday 11:53

The Cos dress is a different fabric composition - contains polyester, so usually that brings the price down. It also doesn't have the waist pin tucks which add to the cost.

Allthemissingsocks · Yesterday 12:40

If you have not bought from Hush before, be warned that the clothes are monstrously over-sized. I am not “that” small (usually UK 6 and 168cm), but their size 4/XXS clothes are absolutely swamping. I would take that into consideration
