15kg of luggage - capsule wardrobe help!!

I’m travelling to the south of France and Italy in the summer. I’ve only got a 15kg luggage allowance on the way out, so need some help with how I can build a capsule wardrobe for the trip.

I like nice summery dresses, or shorts and t-shirts. For the evenings I have two sets of shoes & bags - one pair of gold slider style sandals and a gold bag, one pair of red heels and a red bag (pics attached).

I plan on doing a lot of exploring so day to day I imagine I’ll be wearing trainers a lot - I have a burgundy and cream pair of Adidas Spezials and will probably purchase a new pair of new balance 720s in preparation for the trip. Likely in white or brown.

I will have the ability to do laundry halfway through the trip.

Where do I even start?!

you'll be fine with 15kg weight allowance for summer clothing. They don't weigh a lot at all. Wear your heaviest shoes on the flight and pack sandals.

MiaKulper · 17/05/2026 11:32

Wear your heaviest and bulkiest clothes and shoes for travelling.

That’s not what I asked, I need tips on how to put together a lightweight capsule wardrobe.

How long are you going for and what sort of outfits do you like?
Otherwise, use your browser to find articles on holiday packing.

Newmeagain · 17/05/2026 11:38

You will be fine, but it sounds like you are unnecessarily doubling up on things. For example, do you really need two pairs of trainers? I would probably take one pair of trainers, one pair of comfortable sandals I can walk in, and one pair of more dressy sandals. One day bag, one dressier bag. You get the drift…

spekky · 17/05/2026 11:38

Doh, forgot the shoes and bag!

im away for 9 days

Spezials are different to new balances

You're away for 9 days!? I was assuming the whole summer!?

15kg for 9 days is fine. Get one of the carry on bags that fit all airlines and you're even better.

Newmeagain · 17/05/2026 11:40

My tip is to stick to a colour palette. I find that when I pack (and I am always a light packer) I reach for plain things that all match.

MiaKulper · 17/05/2026 11:41

Start by being less snippy with those trying to help you.

Newmeagain · 17/05/2026 11:42

9 days?? You really don’t need much at all.

I’ve done hand luggage only and hate it 😂

Have you researched the sudoku packing method? I was just away for 12 days and it worked really well. I guess it’s designed for very efficient packing, but the result is a capsule wardrobe.

Yeah this is what I’m thinking - whites, beiges, creams etc with a pop of colour (probably red, as that’s the shoes and bag!)

You were blunt and rude though. They were not. Do you speak like this in real life to strangers?

theDudesmummy · 17/05/2026 11:44

On the shoes: I go to Croatia every summer and I never take any shoes apart from sandals. Do you really need the trainers?

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 17/05/2026 11:46

Take less shoes. Ditch the red shoes and bag and one of the pairs of trainers. Pack a few different belts to switch between styles. You like summery dresses so lean into these. They are lightweight and roll up easily so take 4 or 5. Capsule by packing a pair of lightweight dark trousers and two pairs of shorts and 4 corresponding tops. I would mostly wear dresses though. You can explore in them, dress them up for evening with one of the belts and they wash and dry quickly. Pack a few hats to capsule with. And swimwear!

Yes, exactly. Otherwise you need specific things for each outfit and it becomes very difficult.

i am actually trying to do that with my whole wardrobe now. I feel like it has taken me literally decades to realise that’s where I was going wrong before - buying things that didn’t match anything on my wardrobe already…

Yes I think so - all day I’ll be walking and I don’t want to be doing 20,000+ steps in sandals, but equally I don’t want to be out each night in the same trainers I’ve been walking in. I have 2 carry on bags as well so could always put a pair of shoes in there if needed!

yeah that's what I read. Most summer dresses are lightweight and the picture of the shoes should be okay as long as you wear one pair of trainers to travel in. I'm not going through google for you to actually find any clothing bits.

MiaKulper · 17/05/2026 11:48

The colours are not practical.
I don't like the bag or shoes or 'pops of colour'.

Olive green and denim are far more practical colours.

Shortpoet · 17/05/2026 11:48

With 3 tops, 3 bottoms and 3 layers you can make 27 different combinations.
Maybe add another pair of shorts and a dress and you should be fine.
Stick to a colour pallet eg neutrals and a colour

Try to pick items that go together. Eg don't take a pair of trousers that only go with one top. And only take one pair of comfortable trainers that you'll wear on the plane. You really don't need two.

I travelled to the Caribbean earlier this year with a 10kg allowance that had to include mask and snorkel (light but bulky). I took:

2 pairs of shorts
3 t-shirts that could go with either pair of shorts
1 pair
of linen trousers (I burn easily)
2short 1 sleeved cotton shirts/blouses that could go with any of the bottoms. Smarter than t shirts and could be dressed up or down
I floaty cotton dress
I black sleeveless dress that could be dressed up multiple ways with jewelry and also with the blouses acting as lightweight jackets
3 swimming costumes
I pair of swim shoes
I pair of flip-flops for the beach
I pair of black sandals for evenings
I cotton nightshirt
3 pairs of knickers
1 pair of socks
2 bras
Mask and snorkel

I travelled in
I pair of trousers that I could happily walk in all day
I long sleeved cotton shirt
Hoody
Knickers, socks and bra
Trainers

In my under seat bag I had
Lightweight rain jacket
Spare pair of knickers
Huge lightweight shawl/ scarf that I could use as a beach cover up/sarong

I had washed my underwear every few days

It was fine.and, as always, I didnt wear some of the clothes!
