White dress for size 12-14

Have an event abroad where we have all been asked to wear white. It will be super hot. Love this and it’s in the sale - just struggling to picture if it will make me look like a big fat square or not? Size 12-14, 5ft 8. Average medium build? I just feel like the way it’s been styled on the model has made it really hard for me to picture?.

(I leave in 10 days and the dress I was going to wear I can’t find anywhere! Alternative suggestions welcome)

I have a really cute pair of satin white sling backs and thought it would be like a cute 60s vibe

I like it and it's jacquard which is nice. I wouldn't buy it for me as I would almost certainly spill something on it.

As to whether it will make you look like a big, fat square, no it won't but the fact you think that is a possibility probably means you won't like it. I thought it was an interesting shape and material. I wouldn't think "oh that will make me look like a big, fat square" and I'm shorter and plumper than you.

Mmmmm....not keen

How about this? Got more shape to it

@Bigearringsbigsmile that’s nice.

Marble10 · 14/05/2026 23:35

I’m a similar build/height to you but I wouldn’t buy this. The models legs are stick thin and the dress is very boxy on her and it’s probably size 6 or smaller.

I agree with @PhaedraTwo if you’re questioning your ability to pull it off then you won’t like it or feel confident in it. Wearing it would require a certain gravitas.

EleanorMc67 · 15/05/2026 03:07

It's quite cute - & will probably look better on you than the model! She looks gawky & swamped by it. It's described as "gold" though - so I'm assuming it's a metallic very pale gold rather than white? Have you seen it in the flesh?

That was kind of my thinking - it looks too big on her I think and maybe on someone with a different build it might look like it fits better? I saw it in store ages ago and it’s more like shimmery white if it’s the one I think

Not a fan but thanks for the suggestion

I like the second one but they are all a bit floaty/informal

OP posts:
Petrine · 15/05/2026 07:15

I think you’re right to consider whether the dress will look right. The fabric looks quite stiff and if you have a largish bust it could well go out at the top and not in again under your bust. If so this could give a rather boxy look.

It does look 1960’s cute on the model but she’s 1960’s skinny and can carry it off.

Strandas · 15/05/2026 07:54

What a lovely dress. Where is it from? I think it would look great for a 14-16.

Attictroll · 15/05/2026 07:58

I love it and think it would suit your shape. I think some of the above suggestions are a bit boring and floaty where your pick has a 60’s cool edge to it. Love the idea of simmer. I hate wearing white due to spills but if that’s the dress code I think the one you’ve chosen is great. I love the styling with black boots and can imagine with dark sunglasses would look v cool. Can you find somewhere to try it on or buy and return

This. The dress is lovely and I wouldn’t worry about it on a size 12-14 but as someone with a larger bust this sort of shape looks like old school maternity wear on me. If you’re not so busty it could look great on a larger size than the model.

Calliopespa · 15/05/2026 09:04

I'm afraid I agree with @Petrine .

It's got a Twiggy vibe and Twiggy was chosen to model that sort of look for a reason ie; she was tiny.

You are by no means large, but that look depends for its impact on the dress wearing the model. It's just that kind of look.

ETA I think if you fill it out it will just look matronly/mother of the bride, which at your size there is no need for. Choose something that embraces your shape.

Calliopespa · 15/05/2026 09:20

I'm just looking at it again OP, and I think it is a niche kind of dress for the sort of body type of the model.

The other risk with that style is looking like a slightly stocky toddler in her best dress. It reminds me a bit of little girl dresses before they get to the age of having a bodice or shape, and the shoulder bows add to that. I suspect it will be hard to pull off.

RampantIvy · 15/05/2026 13:01

I don't think the first M and S broderie dress looks informal at all. It is much smarter and prettier than the one you posted @SqueakyFreesia

Fair enough but I thought it looked more “day wear”

OP posts:
EleanorMc67 · 15/05/2026 14:41

So it's for an evening out, with heels etc? I think the M&S broderie one is lovely - for day or evening as it's easily accessorised up. But it's more of a "looking elegant for dinner at a seafront restaurant vibe".

What kind of event is it? And what's your budget? Do you want short & sleeveless, & are you wedded to wearing the shoes you have with it?

SqueakyFreesia · 15/05/2026 14:55

It’s a wedding “pre party” where it’s common for the guests to be asked to wear the same colour. It’s going to be super humid. I had a lovely asymmetrical dress for it but we’ve moved house recently and can’t find it anywhere. I just can’t find anything that seems to stand out to me. Can’t be anything beachy, that would be too casual. I don’t like broderie. I’m not so bothered about wearing different shoes but if I can wear these
ones that would be a bonus

Ah, ok. Had cross-posted so some of those, maybe not. Also forgot to add pics of the others. The Nobody's Child one looks too crumpled in any case! The Reiss one is glam & in the sale in your size!
