Ugh - what to wear with skirts

I only want to wear trainers but honestly it looks mental on me wearing socks or tights - I just can’t get over myself!

Boots are completely fine in winter, love them. But I need a solution for spring/autumn. Summer I can wear flat sandals.

I feel like I’m a Bobby Soxer or in Grease if I wear them with my usual white socks. I think I’m just too old for that look.

The vast majority of summer I’m wearing trainers too. Only maybe a month I’m wearing sandals, I barely wore them last year.

Try sneakerinas, no socks

ohwhatthehelly · 10/05/2026 19:48

Socks and loafers!

LaurieFairyCake · 10/05/2026 19:53

I’ve loads of brogues but they look too heavy.

I want to figure out what to wear with my trainers - I exclusively wear slight platform trainers and they look absolutely fine - it’s my legs that are the problem. Tights look odd, though the young things look good in them and white socks look like I’ve come from the 1950’s.

Im not keen on any other shoes, I want to wear trainers. Sneakerinas have no bounce and not thick enough in the sole.

Wear interesting socks, so it looks deliberate. Co-ordinated with top for example

Ilovemsrachel · 10/05/2026 19:56

So at the moment aside from trainers with skirts I’m wearing:

  • ballet pumps/mary janes
  • slip on vans
  • Low top converse (white)
  • Chunky loafers
  • Brogues (silver)

Wear loafers, smart trainers etc with lovely light weight trousers…

But is finding it difficult.
if I had to wear skirts, definitely not trainers.
loafers, ballet pumps and heeled low rise ankle boots.

thedevilinablackdress · 10/05/2026 20:47

Knee high socks could be an option for long skirts. Something in bamboo or a light merino.

Doggymummar · 10/05/2026 20:58

I wore fisherman's socks with my green Ganni City boots yesterday with a midi denim skirt. I also in the afternoon switched to sliders and tight material ankle socks, from Oliver Bonas, same skirt

MiaKulper · 10/05/2026 20:58

trainer liners

BORING 😁
But, yes an option if proper socks are proving too difficult.

How do you feel about coloured socks? I recently got a pack of pastel coloured socks in Matalan with a bit of a frilly top (not lace, just a slight frill to the top of the sock) which I’m wearing with my trainers and flat shoes. I find them easier than some of my brightly patterned socks that I wear in winter inside my boots. I also have some oatmeal coloured wool ankle socks that are long enough to be scrunched down, and I think they’re ok too. White is too bright for me, it kind of dazzles me whenever my feet pop into view!

I need ideas too, I wear dresses with boots in autumn/winter but have lots of dresses I could wear this time of year but with what shoe.
I’m not allowed open toed shoes at work so that rules out sandals.
Trainers seems the only solution.
I just can’t wear shoes with visible socks, I don’t have the ankles for it

Overtheatlantic · 10/05/2026 21:46

These with invisible socks?

LaurieFairyCake · 10/05/2026 21:59

Yes! That’s the thing, even though im
7 stone 5 I have heavier calves from the exercise, they look fatty even though they’re not. It’s like I’m drawing attention to the only part of the body I don’t really like.

Canvas boots? Converse or something more interesting like Spring Court or Novesta.

StarlightLady · 11/05/2026 07:47

I wear ballet flats, trainers or sandals according to the weather. With them either bare legs or tights/hold ups depending on the season. I tried the socks thing but wasn’t too sure. Then someone shouted at me from a passing vehicle “drop your socks!” That settled it 😀.

I mean, fair enough but randoms shouting fashion advice has always made me double down on whatever it was. I feel I'm doing something right if arseholes don't get it.

ConverselyAttired · 11/05/2026 09:42

Randomer off Pinterest attached but I do just wear no-show socks with low-profile trainers as she is here, or hi top trainers with a tiny peek of white sock. Not white though - I was sick of white trainers and skirts or dresses 3 years ago.

Ugh - what to wear with skirts
MiniMarch · 11/05/2026 09:43

I struggle with this too.
I was at a festival at the weekend and saw loads of people wearing trainers, socks and a skirt or dress. I just think it looks awful, the socks just seem to stick out like a sore thumb. It’s like wearing gloves with a t-shirt.
I feel daft in loafers, like I’m wearing school shoes. I’m worried ballet style shoes would set off PF which has taken years to resolve. So I’m left with trainers and trainer liners or to wait until it’s hot enough for sandals.

Shinyandnew1 · 11/05/2026 09:45

I struggle with this too-I tend to only wear skirts if I can wear sandals (ie sunny day!) or if it’s cold and I can wear tights and boots!

Skirts with trainers look awful on me.
