Ugh - what to wear with skirts

LaurieFairyCake · 10/05/2026 19:24

I only want to wear trainers but honestly it looks mental on me wearing socks or tights - I just can’t get over myself!

Boots are completely fine in winter, love them. But I need a solution for spring/autumn. Summer I can wear flat sandals.

I feel like I’m a Bobby Soxer or in Grease if I wear them with my usual white socks. I think I’m just too old for that look.

I think you just need to try and get over the knismatophobia (fear of socks!).😁
I promise you they dont look as bad as you think they do. They actually look pretty cool IMO and you can play around with colour and texture as its a just another accessory.
I usually go for Converse high tops most of the year, with socks of course!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 11/05/2026 12:47

I think you will have to embrace the trainer liner /invisible sock if you want to wear these trainers with skirts.

Im basically abandoning skirts until I’m ready to move to sandals /summer flats. Trousers it is until the weather improves. (It does feel like winter boot weather today)

They do look bad to me. They just stand out so much. Wearing them with high tops is cheating they hide the socks!

So at the moment aside from trainers with skirts I’m wearing:

  • ballet pumps/mary janes
  • slip on vans
  • Low top converse (white)
  • Chunky loafers
  • Brogues (silver)

Indeed.

I'm mystified by this thread. I never wear trousers. So in winter skirts and dresses with lace up ankle boots and opaque tights,
in spring opaque tights with ballet flats, Mary Janes, brogues,
as it gets warmer, same shoes and sheer tights,
then same shoes and ankle socks,
then fisherman's sandals, with or without ankle socks.

What is so difficult?

mcmuffin22 · 11/05/2026 14:46

I feel your pain. I wear Vans high tops generally in dark colours - this has the bonus of keeping my ankles warm and also meaning that only a bit of sock is on show. Also i haven't worn white socks in decades - black or a darkish colour. I sometimes wear DMs but I have skinny legs and they look a bit heavy. I also have to think about the length of skirt at this time of year. Longer is better IMO or else I get really cold.

thedevilinablackdress · 11/05/2026 15:08

My socks look awesome and I don't care what you all say to the contrary😁

I think the problem is the OP has particular trainers she wants to wear that don’t look good with visible socks and skirts.

Choices are really, different shoes, stick to trousers until it’s sandal weather or have ugly ankles.

Why is it mystifying that people want to wear different things to you?

You've misread my post and the thread. What is mystifying is that posters seem so perplexed at what to wear with skirts. It's not as if skirts are a new invention.

Socks are great.

I think maybe it’s you who hasn’t read the thread.
The OP wants to wear trainers with a skirt but doesn’t like the look of socks with a skirt and trainers on her.
You’ve listed loads of other footwear with socks or tights, none of which are trainers.

ToadRage · 11/05/2026 18:45

I wear trainers all the time. In the summer i usually wear trainer liners. But I almost always wear leggings as well. You'd be hard pushed to find me not wearing a dress and and they are usually knee length or shorter.

Beachforever · 11/05/2026 18:52

I wear trainer socks ie invisible socks. Teen DD tells me I look naff but I feel like I have chunky calves compared to the rest of my legs so I like to show my slim ankle to give my legs more shape. Wearing ankle socks makes me look like I have cankles.

EBoo80 · 11/05/2026 19:00

Mothershoppers on Insta did a helpful video about trying to get used to visible socks. Recommend!

Nitgel · 11/05/2026 19:17

I think the sheer black tights with trainers look ok on the women ive seen. Its hard though. I would not wear socks of any kind !

Nitgel · 11/05/2026 19:18

Or longer skirt to keep warmer 8

Are flesh coloured tights a complete no then ?

LaurieFairyCake · 11/05/2026 19:40

So the black tights in that picture look nuts 🥜 to me - it’s like she forgot because she was wearing sunglasses that she meant to put on black trainers to match her entirely black outfit

I also remember American Tan tights from the 70’s so when I put on a pair of flesh coloured tights it gives me the willies

Trainer socks are ok-ish but I then think I have too much leg on display - that very cool woman posted earlier looks like she forgot her socks though I concede she looks the coolest

LaurieFairyCake · 11/05/2026 19:43

I’m not going back to wearing leggings under skirts, when I was overweight I had to so that I got no thigh rub, now I don’t as my thighs don’t meet. But I literally spent decades wearing leggings under dresses and tunic tops

I struggle with this too-I tend to only wear skirts if I can wear sandals (ie sunny day!) or if it’s cold and I can wear tights and boots!

Skirts with trainers look awful on me.

Same here! I wear skirts and I wear trainers, but never together.

Stoicandhappy · 12/05/2026 12:27

How about trainers and NO SOCKS?

You've lost me I'm afraid. Why would you say she looks like she forgot her socks when you don't think ankle socks look right with skirts? There are no options other than bare leg look (I include flesh tights in that) or sock.

I guess the last resort is a sock that isn't white! I don't own any. Mine are black or navy.

AbundantFlowers · 12/05/2026 12:51

Crocs?
