Andy Sachs' Maxi Dress

Has anyone seen anything on the high street similar to this?
One of Andy Sach's outfits from Devil Wears Prada II, this is by Gabriella Hearst but my budget is more like £50 - not £6k sadly.

Plus size and preferably not a clingy, sweary fabric please?

*Sweaty fabric.

Although I'd prefer it if there were no swearwords featured also.

Disclaimer - I have never bought anything from them but I like a few of their items.

I like the oversized shape and the colours - bright but not too gaudy. The pattern is the least important I think - I'm not keen at all on any of the more traditional "patchwork" patterns suggested by a PP.

I love the Sezane dress from your post, but £200 is still way over budget unfortunately.

Thank you for all the suggestions!

Too strappy? Wrong colours? Something might well filter down to the high street. You might get cotton or viscose for under £50 - but polyester is probably more likely ...

Edited to say that I should have opened @owlpassport 's links first! And that the Alemais Majorelle one is rather lovely ...

Also, plus size as in what size? As ranges vary so much. Do you want straps to cover a bra, or don't you mind? As the original one is racer-back, & the Sezane one is a strappy halterneck.

By bright but not gaudy, what colour preferences do you have? As blue, brown, yellow & pink is a bit of an unusual combination ... & not one that you'll find easily, if at all, let alone in a similar dress shape?

Do you want a floor-length maxi dress, or just midi or longer? And an abstract/graphic sort of multicoloured print, rather than floral?

Does anyone remember those paper clothes you'd cut out and then use the fold over tabs to put them on paper people?
The awful photoshop/AI on the photos on that dress reminded me of that.

No shade it just made me think of them.

Yes I do! And I find the shitty AI/photoshopping on some sites really offputting.

EleanorMc67 · 09/05/2026 19:02

Well, it's pink, yellow, blue & brown - but apart from that it's nothing like what you're after, OP!

She in / Ali Express do a dupe in polyester. No idea what it is really like because they are using images from the brand and the film

PeloMom · 09/05/2026 19:24

I’d expect at least one of the high street retailers to come out with a dupe soon

EleanorMc67 · 09/05/2026 19:26

Completely different OP - I'm just going with the shape - flowing, maxi, wide, sleeveless, with a colourful but not gaudy pattern.

If this comes back in stock again, it might be worth trying. I've had H&M viscose sundresses for holidays before & they've been very comfy & flattering. But I realise that the more I & others post, the more it departs from what you want!

It’s such a simple shape that there must be one in the high streets soon.

its the kind of thing my mum would have run up on a sewing machine over a weekend! Sadly I don’t have her talents so can’t help!

EleanorMc67 · 09/05/2026 19:30

This looks rather decent - viscose. https://www.simplybe.co.uk/shop/p/ka811

And an image of the H&M one above.

True - but not that cheap because of the amount of fabric, even if you can make it yourself? I used to follow someone who made rather fab dresses out of old patterned cotton duvet covers, which she bought at fleamarkets & charity shops!

ParisFrance · 09/05/2026 19:38

This one from Monsoon?

Good point - I’m guessing that’s why people don’t make things anymore. Fabric is so expensive.

I like the idea of making a dress from a 70’s duvet!

I wish I could remember who it was - they were really lovely. And yes, proper 70s fabric would be great! I still have very clear, & very fond, memories of the curtains & wallpaper in my childhood home ...!

That's actually quite good re a (very faintly) similar vibe ...! I like it.

Suzy Sankey, who was on The Great British Sewing Bee, made lots of things out of duvet covers, curtains etc, from charity shops. Check her out on Instagram. 🙂
