Andy Sachs' Maxi Dress

Has anyone seen anything on the high street similar to this?
One of Andy Sach's outfits from Devil Wears Prada II, this is by Gabriella Hearst but my budget is more like £50 - not £6k sadly.

Plus size and preferably not a clingy, sweary fabric please?

Suzy Sankey, who was on The Great British Sewing Bee, made lots of things out of duvet covers, curtains etc, from charity shops. Check her out on Instagram. 🙂

Oh gosh - she's fabulous, isn't she! How bloody talented ...

I've just spotted some big pouffy midi/maxi skirts that she made, which remind me of the shape of a couple of Kemi Telford skirts I own. And I have several rolls of vintage silk & cotton in the back of my wardrobe that I found in charity shops ... Maybe I could attempt something basic ... 🤔?

Fashion is so ridiculous. If this was in Primark nobody would look twice at it 🤣

Go for it!

She's very inspirational.

She made an amazing collection for her trip to Japan recently, and for her wedding in Vegas.

I'm going to buy myself a cheapie sewing machine and have a go myself 🙂

Don't take this the wrong way but this dress triggered an immediate and very strong sense memory of a corridor in a leisure centre I used to go to in the '90s.

Try Next - put "halter maxi dress" in the search function and loads of options come up.

Does anyone remember those paper clothes you'd cut out and then use the fold over tabs to put them on paper people?
The awful photoshop/AI on the photos on that dress reminded me of that.

No shade it just made me think of them.

I used to love doing these! I’d make my own paper dresses and dolls, wanted to be a fashion designer 😊

If you can sew then the Helen’s Closet Orchard dress has a similar shape, and could be lengthened to hit exactly where you want it. Made in a viscose challis it would be breathable and swing nicely, or in a light cotton lawn it would have a bit more structure.

Orchard Top & Dress (FREE)

Size Range: 0-34 (33” - 62″ hip) The Orchard Top and Dress is an effortless addition to any wardrobe. Orchard features spaghetti straps and a dartless a-line silhouette. Inseam pockets are included for the dress views. Sew Orchard in a drapey lightweig...

To answer a few questions

Size 18 - 5"3, would prefer a maxi length and happy to have anything too long taken up. Anything sort of mid-lower calf or longer would be nice. Sleeveless would be my first choice but style of straps/ backless etc not important. I love the kimono dress from Monsoon but I think it would look like too much fabric on me.

Colour-wise I tend to stay away from full on primary colours clashing together and I dislike too much red. Cool tones tend to suit me most.

I really like the ones that have had stripes rather than florals so far - the sezane is still the best in terms of colour mix and pattern but I really love the shape of the H&M pineapple one.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions, definitely lots to look at.

I really like this one, not normally the colours I would go for and quite different from the one in my OP but really pretty. Thanks!

Too strappy? Wrong colours? Something might well filter down to the high street. You might get cotton or viscose for under £50 - but polyester is probably more likely ...

Edited to say that I should have opened @owlpassport 's links first! And that the Alemais Majorelle one is rather lovely ...

Edited

I love that stripey one!

Not sure how to send a link but its described as multi swirl scoop back jersey maxi dress £22. Im a size 26 and it is comfortable, looks fab and fits well.

I ordered the swirly then ended up with the other 3 because I loved it so much and they all look different! I have brought 2 away in holiday and they have been great. 😊
