My red-headed autistic (it is relevant as she’s stubborn af) 16 year old is struggling to find a dress for an upcoming extended family wedding.

The dress code is smart but not formal. All the dresses she’s sending me to look at are floor length bodycon very fitted and more suited to a Hollywood ball / evening event for a 6ft escort rather than a wedding.

she’s 5’2” and a size 12 with wide shoulders and an hourglass figure so will struggle with the strapless fitted long dresses she likes

She refuses a trouser suit, nothing above the knee or just below, must be maxi.

Can someone with better taste than I point out appropriate dresses I could send her because everything I send is ugly or middle
aged apparently and everything she sends me looks like a high class hooker.

The blue and black dress would be fine for a teen at a wedding imo.

My dd is looking to get her U6 prom dress from baby boo. I’ve linked strapless maxis. They are a good option for an hour glass figure. But not petite, so would need shortening and possibly too long in the waist. They only offer store credit for returns. I honestly think PLT would be a good option and just steer her towards something not too racy. https://www.babyboofashion.com/en-gb/collections/shop?q=strapless+maxi

@Mummyoflittledragon Sorry to derail here - but how have you found the fit and quality of Baby Boo? My other DD wants a dress from there but I am really put off by the not being able to get a refund if it doesn't suit her, also delivery charges but she is adamant this is what she wants :)

MermaidofRye · 04/05/2026 09:55

If she insisted on wearing the Dragonfruit one with her breasts falling out, I would tell her that she could wear it sitting at home in the ashes as she won't be going to the wedding in it.

She has to learn about appropriate ways to dress and this is a good time to start-turning up to a wedding with her tits hanging out will make her look either desperate, stupid or someone who is hooking for business.

It's your job to stop this happening to her and if she won't be told, she stays at home.

Let her wear what she wants!

And your comments about looking g like an escort are horrible.

Agree. Really really nasty

minipie · 03/05/2026 18:50

this could suit a redhead?

Re “let her wear what she wants” we don’t know what the DD has put forward. If it’s something very tight and revealing (sounds like it is) then it would be inappropriate for someone’s wedding and it’s fair for OP to say that.

Quite. I went to a funeral last week and a teenage niece of the deceased wore a sleeveless halter neck dress with a split up to the knicker line. Just that on a freezing cold day.

honeylulu · 04/05/2026 10:15

OK now I've seen the dresses she wants i agree they aren't right, too much flesh exposed at the cleavage and midriff. I think she'd feel uncomfortable wearing something like that and realising how out of place it is.

I also think full length AND strapless can give the impression that you wanted to be a bridesmaid and are protesting about not being asked! Someone asked my friend that at a wedding when she was wearing a dress like that which also happened to be the same colour as the bridesmaids. She rushed off to get a cardigan from her car!

Olva Rose has some nice occasion dresses which are pretty and glamorous, long length and definitely not "middle aged".

Arregaithel · 04/05/2026 10:21

@alpenguin sorta gulped at her choices tbh 🙈

but.... she seems to be very comfortable in her own skin to even contemplate those dresses, which is fantastic.

She could go backless, gives enough "reveal" without shocking her mammy 😉

along the lines;

here, here, here and this

I haven’t actually bought anything from there yet. Dd borrowed a dress one time, but I didn’t see it in the flesh. She liked it and in her opinion was true to size. I suspect it’s probably not much different in quality from PLT but with a different price point… I think PLT is very good value for the quality. And there is no point arguing with her. She is very particular and won’t go to her prom unless the dress meets her exact requirements.

I'd just let her wear what she wants too within reason. Nobody is going to be that bothered what a 16 year old wears.

There’ll be some people quite hot and bothered by what 16-year-olds wear.

This reddit thread could be useful @AAAAYY

minipie · 04/05/2026 11:05

Agree the dresses she likes aren’t suitable for a wedding.

Let us know if she would tolerate any of the ones suggested here OP! Omnes looks like a good shout if the reviews are ok.

Monsoon are always handy when it comes to finding nice things to go to weddings in. Something like this would look stunning with her red hair.
Worth having a gander at what they have to offer?

What about spaghetti straps but with a sheer or fishnet top under it. You can get tops especially made to go under strappy dresses. That's very fashionable at the moment. You may have to use the services of a dressmaker to adjust the length as I am not short but finding a lot of dresses this season are too long for me.
A shawl or shrug may also be quite nice.
I get how she feels as I was a bigger built teenager with a big bust at 16 and all the other girls seemed so cute and feminine with their bare neckline and I felt frumpy compared to them.

awfulapril · 04/05/2026 12:13

Hey @alpenguin
im not sure why you're being so aggressive. I've not the time or inclination to "stalk" you and that certainly wasn't any faux Scottish.
how perculiar.
I was just saying woman in a silly way- in virtual inverted commas. Like "laydee" or so on

I wish you luck in your search. You'll need it with that attitude

My DD has found some lovely long dresses on Shein. Not the nasty material a lot of the stuff is made from either. If you go to the petite range and filter it a bit. Show us what she likes and we can go from there

You don’t like nasty material but you don’t mind the human slavery? Weird priorities.

Might be just me but I've been unable to open any threads sine I clicked on OP's 'white Fox ' links .
No blame attributed to OP .
Have had to come off phone onto lap top.

Italiangreyhound · 04/05/2026 12:47

Personally, I think at 16 she is old enough to choose her own outfit. Although, if you are paying g you get to vito any you are nit willing to pay for.

I also think the only things you can't wear to a wedding (just my view) are a white dress, jeans, or shorts. When it says it's not formal i am not sure what that means for men, no suits? No tails, no top hats?

Italiangreyhound · 04/05/2026 12:48

@awfulapril What's a WUMMAN?

Italiangreyhound · 04/05/2026 12:54

chocconuttalott i could not get all those links to open but the light green Petite Light Green Satin Slip Midi Dress from New Look is beautiful and would look fab on a red head (i think).

Italiangreyhound · 04/05/2026 13:13

SarahAndQuack the wrap is a great idea.

I love the pale green puff ball dress.

For some reason the ASOS links don't work, I have had these issues before with ASOS links. OP if you just search the name of the dress in the link you can find them that way.
