My hands age me!

RomeoOscarXrayXray · 15/04/2026 13:58

I have a photo to share, I’m presuming it will take a wee while to get approved.

Look at the back of my hand, both hands are like this. None of my similar aged friends have hands like this. What TF is it?

Can I do anything about it?

They are freckles (sounds nicer than liver spots) and if you have fair skin and are gen X then not that surprising since sunscreen wasn't used in the 70s and 80s (at least, my Mum didn't believe in it and I only discovered it when I decided to go interrailing as a student and bought my own skincare). You're not going to have the same hands you had when you were a teenager. So you can either slow the aging now with sunscreen or gloves or accept that your worth does not lie in your physical appearance.

Yes very fair skin, in fact as a toddler I had reddiah hair. I’m a Scot. I start blue and tan to white.

I’m a Gen X (or part of the micro generation xennial!)

No we didn’t get much in the way of skin care, in fact people used to advise me to go for sun beds to build up colour/tolerance. I didn’t listen to that advice though.

I’m a very freckly person, some I have to pay attention to. Just in case.

Sun damage, sadly.
At least they aren't as bad as the knobbly-knuckles I've started to get.
The lovely joys of ageing. Still, much better than the alternative.

RomeoOscarXrayXray · 16/04/2026 21:00

@Turnitoffnonagainoh yes. I’m very happy to age. I treasure every wrinkle and grey hair. My Mum died suddenly when she was 28 and I was 8.

I would like fewer age spots on hands though! 😳

Yes age spots! Bastards. I use azalic
acid (sp) and tretinoin at night and mineoook much better. Still wrinklier than I'd like but I am 54 so...

@LoveYouPickle would you mind sharing the name of the products you use please?
Thank you ☺️

Turnitoffnonagain · 16/04/2026 21:08

@RomeoOscarXrayXray
I had a couple of suspicious moles taken off my arm and face last year. Am fair and quite moley and have regular checks at dermo. It's a real faff and I really envy olive skinned folk. On the upside, my face is largely wrinkle free at 60, so i can't complain.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 16/04/2026 20:53

I didn't know that - that's good to know!!

Oh sorry it turns out I’m a liar. I’ve been informed this isn’t true for sunspots it just prevents them getting darker. Only freckles fade without extra exposure. Sorry for the misinformation.

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 16/04/2026 21:25

You can get them lasered off. I have one above each eyebrow that I get lasered off every couple of years. They do come back but lighter and never as dark as they were. The laser initially makes them really dark then they kind of fall off like magic.

Where did you get them done? 😊

Lourdes12 · 16/04/2026 22:28

Sunscreen and retinol is your answer

Cathod · 16/04/2026 22:48

Following with interest. My hands are similar and I'm 37! From 20s onwards I have been religious with sunscreen but sadly was not quite so particular in my teenage years. I have OCD and wash my hand frequently so they look so much older than the rest of me!

albalass · 16/04/2026 22:58

I'm mid 40s. My skin on my face is still ok, but my hands have aged massively in the last couple of years. Also a blue freckly skinned Scot.

Chiltern medical clinic in Goring-on-Thames.

SouthernNights59 · 17/04/2026 00:03

Mine are worse than that but I live in NZ and am outside a lot. They look like my Nana's hands😂

SpidersAreShitheads · 17/04/2026 02:54

I’m 50 and I don’t have any dark spots but my hands are looking a bit wrinkly and crepey.

Your hands look fabulous @Breadcat24!

Would the products you’re all recommending work for my ageing hands or mainly just for dark spots?

Sun spots fade over time if not exposed again

Sadly they don’t - or not in my experience anyway. I use SPF50 every day now, but the horse has well and truly bolted

A question for those who’ve used tretinoin - does it work on its own, i.e. without the acid?

sociableintrovert123 · 17/04/2026 08:30

@Naysayer999what acid do you mean? Glycolic? Salicylic? Exfoliating acids are basically redundant when you use tretinoin so you shouldn’t need to use any other products.

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 17/04/2026 09:17

Sunscreen on your hands year-round in the day time, and a hand cream containing retinol at night. Beauty Pie do a good one if you know anyone with a subscription, or No7 do one.

badgersbadgerseverywhere · 17/04/2026 09:34

I don’t have many sunspots but I have this instead. Thin skin, no fat on my hands, protruding bones and veins like a veritable crone. I’m 53.

But as I always tell myself, it’s better than being dead. Even though my bony hands look like they belong on a corpse 😂

I have these on my neck and wear Hijab, so it's never exposed to the sun. I think there's an element of genetics at play too sadly.

I've always wondered about the skin of women who wear the hijab - does your skin look a lot younger than people of the same age as you? They say that sun is the biggest factor in ageing, so do you have many fine lines/wrinkles etc?

Your hands look completely normal… you’re not meant to have fat hands little fat is normal. Your hands look similar to mine in terms of bones, vein visibility and I’m 30.

I bought this
Absolutely spectacular results. I was going to get laser not now. took 3 weeks. Loads of brown spots before- I am 60

Great results! I would add derma rolling to this (or preferably a derma stamp if skin is more mature). This will encourage new collagen growth so you've not only dealt with the age spots but you are also plumping up the skin over time

Silverfoxette · 17/04/2026 10:48

i saw somewhere that putting apple cider vinegar on liver spots helps them fade

Well any really, I don’t know much on the subject, hydroquinone (?) is something I’ve seen mentioned.

Breadcat24 · 17/04/2026 11:48

Should also add that I have freckles on my shoulders and decolletage and am too mean to use that expensive cream so have been using this and I think it helps. It is £3.99
