No show socks (again)

Not the most exciting topic and I’m sure
it pops up often, particularly with spring/summer approaching, but please could I have your recommendations for no show socks that:
1 actually don’t show, either with trainers or lower cut shoes, like ballerinas
2 stay put at the back without creeping off
3 offer sizes up to mine, ie, 7.5 - 8
TIA !

Yes! I’m a size 7.5-8, let me find the link

dreamlove · 08/04/2026 01:48

Why? I buy pretty socks with wonderful patterns, and show them off.

Dreamingofgreece · 08/04/2026 03:14

I find the above ones really good and they stay put

Unless you are younger than 40-something, I am jealous of your view - I am one of these people who can't get their head around something that was a total no no growing up and that is now on trend.

Teenage trauma - I'll never show my socks and never make my brows thicker on purpose, ever!

(Sorry for derailing the OP!)

Re size: if looking in shops, look in the men's department to see if they do socks sized 6-9. Sainsbury's and M&S do.

I find women's 4-8 socks are a tight stretch for size 6.5 but men's 6-9 fit well without much stretch.

Buscobel · 08/04/2026 08:22

Apparently, those of us who will carry on wearing trainer and no show socks are now beyond the pale. We should all be wearing loafers or ballerina flats too. No trainers. I’ll carry on wearing what I’ve got. I’ve got some grippy no show socks. Next, maybe?

Catcatcatcatcat · 08/04/2026 08:29

I thought no show socks were a total fashion faux pas now?

It’s all ankle socks round my way (South East)

I'm much older than 40. I never got my head round how silly no socks looks.

Agree - I’m 8.5 and women’s trainer socks don’t stay put on me. Just bought these and they’re great: https://www.marksandspencer.com/5-pack-cool-and-fresh-invisible-trainer-liners/p/clp60719318?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share

I’m 45 and don’t wear white sports socks with everything. It looks naff

awfulapril · 08/04/2026 09:19

I buy the Marks and Spencer ones that have a little gel thing at the back of the heel to stop them falling down

I'm over 40 and am fully on board with the pretty socks / cover ankles trend. It's more comfortable and fun.

Edited bc I realise I'm detailing the thread.

Yes to M&S men’s, I’ve often borrowed dh’s - the women’s ones just don’t stay put. I’m a size 7 and wide.

polyhymnia · 08/04/2026 13:43

Thank you so much for all your suggestions, which I’m working my way through. A good point about small men’s socks. I’ve bought these in the past but had forgotten that option.
I actually found the detour to discuss whether it’s stylish to wear no show socks at all interesting. Haven’t tried that option but might experiment with that look. I think I’ll always want no show with some of my shoes, though. And I’ll always have thin eyebrows because I overplucked them back in the day! (though am thinking of getting some thicker ones tattooed on by a good beauty therapist)

Me too. I think no show socks are firmly millennial. I am Gen X and love ankle socks and crew socks and am happy to wear them with anything.

My Gen Z DD and her friends wouldn’t be seen dead in trainer socks/skinny jeans/anything else they think of as Millennial Wear.

I expect Gen Alpha will make them popular again at some point 😆

ItWasntMyFault · 08/04/2026 17:07

M&S ones, with the gel patch in the heel so they stay on, are really good - Home Bargains do some that are almost identical that are also great (and a lot cheaper).

Auburngal · 08/04/2026 20:42

I like colourful socks when wearing trousers. Having ballet pumps with trainer liners reminds me as a 6 year old - socks and sandals.

taybert · 08/04/2026 20:47

I keep reading this sock thing on mumsnet and in the Guardian and places about how only old millennials wear no show socks and cool trendy young people wear ankle socks and smirk at us old folk and I’ve believed it. I live somewhere rural that isn’t the height of fashion so assumed anyone I saw who wasn’t conforming to this was just out of fashion like me. Anyway, I went to London at the weekend and now I call bullshit. Sure some young folk are wandering around with ankle socks when they’re in a dress or cropped jeans but really, there are plenty wearing a dress or cropped trousers and trainers with no socks showing so they either have stinky trainers or no show socks. I accept, there are many more socks on show than there used to be but I just think visible socks or invisible socks are the options now rather than just invisible socks like in the old days.

Auburngal · 08/04/2026 20:52

I am just into the Millennials as born Jan 1981 but more of a Gen Z
