What’s the deal with socks now?

I’m your standard mid 30s millennial. I wouldn’t consider myself ‘fashionable’ but I like clothes and enjoy looking well put together in any given situation.

As spring arrives, we’re about to hit the yearly moment when I move from boots worn with everything, to white trainers worn with everything - usually fairly plain, slim, low rise lace ups.

I’ve finally got my head around jeans (I still love my skinnies but am embracing wide leg, barrel and boyfriend) but I’ve heard trainer socks are now the height of uncool??

So what DOES look acceptable when your trousers/dress leave your ankle exposed?

I am tall with big feet so things that look cute on dainty feet make me look like a clown, so I fear the wrong socks will add to this issue.

Photos and links of acceptable socks greatly appreciated!

So what I call normal ankle socks are the socks of choice I believe. I think the youth refer to them as crew socks. 🤷‍♀️. So your sock should be visible, ankles covered. None of those trainer socks. But I get confused because what I call trainer socks young people seem to call ankle socks.

you need this tiktok channel cover, lots of Gen Z counsel (sp) sock rule videos.

It is fashionable to see socks now. With skirts and trousers.

JulietteHasAGun · 02/04/2026 18:44

And some white slouch socks like these

Don't do the leggings thing with sports socks (white with black stripes around the top) pulled up over them and worn with Adidas trainers like Kyle Walker's wife.

VivienneDelacroix · 02/04/2026 18:49

I'm so happy that visible socks are now fashionable. It was social death to have any kind of visible sock-cuff for so long, and trainer socks never worked for me, pop socks were even worse. As a Gen X-er I'm fully embracing having socks on show. I love socks.

DC555 · 02/04/2026 18:50

Thank you for the links!

Ok, so do I need different socks to complement different coloured dresses? And then with cropped jeans, doesn’t it all look kind of weird with jeans, then a bit of calf, then sock, then shoe?

I feel like this is something that is very easy to get wrong. Trainer socks always seemed safe and very easy!

Watching with interest. I tried those slouchy socks though and looked like Ms Trunchbull

bunnyvsmonkey · 02/04/2026 18:56

The slimmest part of the leg is the ankle though so you risk elephant legs with the wrong height sock

😂 I very much fear this would be me!

Saw someone yesterday brown skirt to just above ankle leather sandals (what we used to call jesus sandals) and red trimmed white ankle socks with a heart decal on the side

BitOutOfPractice · 02/04/2026 19:02

You know the answer though op. “It depends”

I have trainer socks, tube socks, ankle socks, slouch socks. I decide as the mood takes me.

and I’m sorry @PhoebeFluffingtonFyffe I wear that look - but only when I’m actually going to the gym.

JulietteHasAGun · 02/04/2026 19:05

I will definitely wear different coloured socks depending on the outfit. But quite often I’m not matching the coloured socks depending but rather complementing the colour I guess. My favourite socks are either red, emerald green, deep blue or mustard. I find one of those options tends to go with most stuff.

So I will happily go out wearing a black dress, black Mary Jane shoes and bright red socks.

i don’t wear cropped jeans so can’t help with that to be honest. Most of my dresses or skirts are long and my jeans or trousers are full length.

Why not, couldn't get excited about something as banal as socks tbh

MidnightMeltdown · 02/04/2026 19:41

I’m a millennial and I still wear trainer socks. I can’t get it out of my head that regular socks look totally ridiculous! Especially if wearing a dress, I’d feel like a primary school kid 😂

MidnightMeltdown · 02/04/2026 19:47

Plus, who wants to look like Gen Z? As an older Millennial, they’re still kids in my eyes! 😂

I’m Gen X. I’m not doing it to look like Gen Z. I’m doing it because I’ve always worn crew socks. Can’t stand trainer socks. Am delighted at my age to be in fashion 😂. I’m sure it won’t last. See also wearing trainers with dresses. Been doing that since the 1990s. 👍🏻

Kepler22B · 02/04/2026 20:00

Can I tag a question onto this. What about tights? I usually wear thick opaque tights in the winter. Are nude thin tights ok to wear with dressses?

B0D · 02/04/2026 20:37

I’m old and never got into trainer socks as my ankles would freeze. I love showing off my many coloured socks collection, Including some rabbit eared ones

PicklePalace · 02/04/2026 20:41

I wear mine like this. Ankle socks with a stripe or two or the same but more sporty

probably looks ridiculous on someone of my advanced years but meh

RosesAndHellebores · 02/04/2026 20:42

I am old. I never wore leg warmers or puff ball skirts and didn't give a flying how fashionable they were.

Catcatcatcatcat · 02/04/2026 20:51

I’m Gen X and could never get on with Millennial trainer socks. I love the fact we can wear proper socks now.

I quite like a turned over ankle sock.

Mumandcarer80 · 02/04/2026 21:11

I hate that socks on show look. I don’t care if trainer socks are out I won’t be wearing hideous socks. I went mad the first time one of my son’s carers put him in shorts and normal white sports socks. I just didn’t want anyone taking the mickey out of him we get enough of that as it is. Only to be told that’s the fashion now Jane.😂😂😂

Yep same here. I’ll be doing a trainer sock restock soon!

BretonStripe · 02/04/2026 21:19

Ooh, I'm off to get socks tomorrow and also have spent many a night recently fretting and losing sleep over this very issue jokes <maybe>

I wanna know what to wear with calf-length shirt dresses when it's too warm for thick tights and boots but not warm enough for bare feet? Socks and trainers? Lighter tights and trainers?

And yes to cropped jeans...I used to wear trainers liners or trainers socks. Can't imagine wearing normal socks with those. And all my socks are plain black.

Also, I was born in the early 80s if that matters (probably not). Cba to Google what gen that makes me...
